Re: shopping for guys
Spend like $250, buy a ps2 and a game he really likes. Then each other holiday buy him another game... simple as that (this coming from a guy.)

Re: shopping for guys
I have a different approach to gift giving, and tend to give gifts that are very unique to the individual.
This requires knowing someone well, and paying attention to what they say. Everyone has something they've "always wanted" or "always looking for but can't find" or "it would be neat to have, but I wouldn't buy for myself" or "I had when I was a kid, but lost it."
I end up buying quite a few things at auctions, such as rare memorabilia. Those items tend to be a big hit. I hate giving gifts that any schmoe could have picked up at a big box retail store or at amazon.com.

Re: shopping for guys
First of all, ignore everyone who suggests what you should buy... they don't know your guy or his likes/dislikes.
Second, shopping for guys is tricky business... but I'll bet that it's just as hard for them guys to shop for females.
You have to get inside his head... once you're tuned in to the male brain frequency then shopping for him becomes a cinche. Look at everything from his perspective, this can be really difficult if you don't know him well... concentrate on his hobbies, what does he spend lots of time doing? Computers? Video games? Music? Movies? Does he have a specific taste in clothing? Does he need clothing? Do you know his size or are you able to get that info from his mum?
If you buy clothing for a guy you HAVE to ignore your taste, and concentrate on HIS taste. Remember that even though YOU like it, he still might hate it. Even mum's screw up when buying clothing for their sons... so you can clearly see that clothing is the hardest thing, so don't jump into this unless you've got him figured out.
Budget is also a big thing, guys hobbies are rarely inexpensive. If he snowboards then even buying him a new pair of gloves will cost you $200... and it's not the coolest gift to give (it MIGHT be, depending on the guy)
Also, if you're going to get something that relates to a hobby and you're not prepared to spend enough to get the BEST of whatever you're getting, then don't attempt it... for instance, say he's into skateboarding... if it comes down to buying a low-quality board because it's the only one you can afford, or buying something else (t-shirt, high-end skateboard wheels, etc) that is the top if the line for the same amount of money, go with the less expensive, higher-quality gift.
My guy is a computer and electronic engineer, and he spends a lot of time on his computer. He kept mentioning that he was running out of space (he downloads heaps and also rips all of his cd's onto his hard-drive) so when his birthday rolled around one of the gifts I gave him was an 80GB Seagate HDD... now you raise your brow in disbelief and say "you gave a hard-drive as a birthday present?!" but I guarantee he loved it... I could've gotten a shoddy 120GB Hard Drive for a lot less money, but I did my homework and I got the best Hard Drive on the market for what I had to spend. I also got other things, girlfriendy meaningfull gifts like a spindle of 80min CD-r's, 2 T-shirts, a CD of nudey pictures of yours truly, a mushy lovey-dovey book that I hand-made (guys dig the romantic crap too ya know) and a dancing kung-foo hamster...
Just focus on him, pay attention to every little thing he says, don't be obvious or you'll give it away, but ask him questions that you think might show you the way.
Mum's are more than happy to help their son's girlfriends when it comes to size info, or snooping around to find out what cd's, games, or movies he already owns. They dated too way back when so they know how hard it can be.

Re: shopping for guys
I might be the easiest guy in the world to shop for. I only ever ask for booze, cigarettes, music and books. Not one prices over twenty bucks.

This is true. The best gift I ever got from a girl was a yearÂ’s subscription to a rather obscure magazine that I had made a passing comment about. If you have not been doing any listening, get him a year's worth of Playboy. You'll be the coolest ever for him.

BAHH! you have no idea! guys have it so much worse. we think you might be a large, but if you're not, we're afraid to get bitched at.
or we think that you might look good in green, but can't remember if you like it.
or we think you like silver, but you really like gold. its so much harder for guys.

All those things can be combatted by paying attention. It's not that hard.

Re: shopping for guys
Here is something I found on a website a couple years ago...Hopefully it will clear a few things up and help you!
Rule #1:
When in doubt - buy him a cordless drill. It does not matter if
he already has one. I have a friend who owns 17 and he has yet
to complain. As a man, you can never have too many cordless
drills. No one knows why.
Rule #2:
If you cannot afford a cordless drill, buy him anything with the
word ratchet or socket in it. Men love saying those two words.
"Hey George, can I borrow your ratchet?" "OK. By-the-way, are
you through with my 3/8-inch socket yet?" Again, no one knows
why.
Rule #3:
If you are really, really broke, buy him anything for his car. A
99-cent ice scraper, a small bottle of de-icer or something to
hang from his rear view mirror. Men love gifts for their cars.
No one knows why.
Rule #4:
Do not buy men socks. Do not buy men ties. And never buy men
bathrobes. I was told that if God had wanted men to wear
bathrobes, he wouldn't have invented Jockey shorts.
Rule #5:
You can buy men new remote controls to replace the ones they
have worn out. If you have a lot of money buy your man a
big-screen TV with the little picture in the corner. Watch him
go wild as he flips, and flips, and flips.
Rule #6:
Buy men label makers. Almost as good as cordless drills. Within
a couple of weeks there will be labels absolutely everywhere.
"Socks" "Shorts" "Cups" "Saucers" "Door" "Lock" "Sink"... You
get the idea. No one knows why.
Rule #7:
Never buy a man anything that says "some assembly required" on
the box. It will ruin his Special Day and he will always have
parts left over. No one knows why.
Rule #8:
Men enjoy danger. That's why they never cook - but they will
barbecue. Get him a monster barbecue with a 100-pound propane
tank. Tell him the gas line leaks. "Oh the thrill! The
challenge! Who wants a hamburger?"
Rule #9:
Tickets to a football game are a smart gift. However, he will
not appreciate tickets to "A Retrospective of 19th Century
Quilts." Everyone knows why.
Rule #10:
Men love chainsaws. Never, ever, buy a man you love a chainsaw.
If you don't know why - please refer to Rule #8 and what happens
when he gets a label maker.
Rule #11:
It's hard to beat a really good wheelbarrow or an aluminum
extension ladder. Never buy a real man a step ladder. It must be
an extension ladder. No one knows why.
Rule #12:
Rope. Men love rope. It takes them back to their cowboy origins,
or at least The Boy Scouts. Nothing says love like a hundred
feet of 3/8" manila rope. No one knows why.
