Default A shot instead of the pill

Call me ignorant but my buddy is banging a chick that gets a shot every 3 months instead of taking the pill. Is this true? I've never heard of it. Can anyone please give me some info. on it? Thanks.

It's called the Depo (DEPO?) shot. It works the same way as the birth control pill, except it's designed so that it only requires a shot every three months instead of having to remember to take the pill daily. There's not much else to it, unless you're wondering how the pill works too.

So I guess the pill is pretty much extinct?

The pill is in no way extinct, my friend.

Some women choose the convienience of having an injection every three months as opposed to taking a pill at the same time of the day, every day.

Some don't like needles and choose to take the pill.

But as you asked, the three month shot is a reality. Go with Spiffy when he says it's called the depo shot...He's smart with this sort of stuff!

No way is the pill gone for good cause girls still use it to regulate their monthly flow. You can't use the shot to do that because many girls don't even get a period when their getting the shots.

This shot sounds dangerous, so like girls are warned not to take the pill too long, what are they warned about the pill?

On a related note/subject:

There are now clinical trials for a new hormone blance in shots that will make it so that a girl only has her period once every 3 months. It's all manner of convenient and usefull. Should also help prevent cancer.

Also, clinical trials for a version of the pill/shot for men should start in the next year or two.

The chemical name for the injection is Depo-Provera.

I was on it for 9 months, myself, and didn't really like it. I'd been on the pill for a while and wanted to try to the injection, since the pill (at the time) was about $25 per month and the injection was $40 for three months.

Anyway, with the injection, you kind of flat-line emotionally. Never happy, never sad, and never aroused either. It eventaully made me quite depressed.

So I finally asked myself - what's the point of making myself infertile if I never wanna have sex??? And I went back on the pill.

As far as other side effects go - some women bleed for a long time (like a month straight) when they start. For me - I never got my period the entire time I was on the injections. THAT was the best damn part of the whole thing.

Don't knock it just because you've had a bad experience with it. Different women react differently to having their hormones tampered with. Many have fantastic results, but there is a definate percentage who don't react well to it. The same goes for different formulas of the Pill.

If you're replying to me, I'm not knocking nor saying that my experience is the sole experience that women should expect to have. I'm just telling MY experience with it.

I thought that was pretty obvious, but I guess not.

I am engaged, actually.

Am I a hottie? Well, I guess that depends on your definition of what a hottie is!

No, it's because your engaged. I don't care if you have a bf, but engaged or marriage is out of my line.

There was (it may still exist) a once-every-three-months contraceptive shot for men, too. It was mainly testosterone (too much reduces fertility). It really sucked, because the testosterone made men really angry and shit. It also increased body hair growth.

Also, Depo Provera can have some pretty nasty side effects, depending on the person. Read up on that.

the shot is basically a huge dose of hormones all at once. i hear that it makes you really sick for the first few days of the 3 month period. mixed reactions really.

i've also heard of a patch, like a nicotine patch, except with hormones in it. i hear that that works really well.
