I agree with ATypiCalStuDenT about the differences between all the terms that can be used, but they are often used interchangeably because they all involve one common denominator: the exchange of power or loss of control. I'm just going to use the term S&M because that term is more common, but in practice, D/s is what applies more often.

There is a difference between wanting to play the roll of a dominant or submissive and actually being one. Most (probably all) of you seem to be talking about the roll playing. The difference is roll playing is enhanced vanilla sex and true S&M starts to become something very different. There are some power aspects to all sex and relationships. Some are as simple as who is on top, who initiates, or who gets to decide if it was “good” or not. But that is just a part of the normal power relationships that already exist in everyday life. Like it or lump it, we are not equal. Someone will always get the upper hand in every relationship. People who look for equality in relationships are either using that as a power play, or they are just out of touch with reality.

In S&M roll playing, you intensify certain aspects of normal power play to enhance your sex. True S&M practitioners often call this “topping from the bottom” and often have very little respect for it as a real S&M practice. What happens is the bottom either dictates the scene or sets limits. They want to experience getting whipped or tied down. They like the idea of being a slut or want to feel like they are being taken over by animal instincts. But it is their fantasy, and they dictate how far it goes. They are still themselves and in control, only with enhanced sex.
