Chivalry and Respect
What ever happened to the good old days of chivalry, respect, and honor. It is rare anymore to see any one hold the door open for some one let alone a female. In my opinion people have become for the most part ignorant, rude, and self centered. This does not apply to everyone because, yes there are still some sincere people left but it is rare to find them.
This is think is brought on partly due to the rising fad of "girl power" Don't get me wrong I am 100% for women having equal rights and being on an even level as Men. However thought it seems that even they have taken it to far sometimes. They sacrificed being polite and courtous for being equal. Sometimes it is the women that don't want men to respect them. Or hold the door open for them because they instantly think that the guy thinks that he is better than them which is not the case
I was at the store on Saturday with my fiance and there was a women in her 30's that had one son with her that looked about the age of 6. Well I held the door open for and she actually got mad at me for that and said "I don't need a man to hold the door for me, I am capable of opening my own door you sexist pig" then she looked at my fiance and said "How do you life with such chauvinistic asshole" My fiance's response was "Because he respects and loves me" Well the lady just gave us a dirty look and walked off.
Now I don't see how I was wrong in holding the door open for her. I do that even for other Men. It is just a polite thing to do. So I am trying to say that the lack of chivalry and respect is not just due to the men it is just as much the womans fault in this case. I just don't understand how people can be like that. When I am out to a fancy dinner I stand up when my fiance leaves the table, I call my elders Sir or Mam, I try to be polite to people even if they are rude to me. It seems that no one appreciates this any more and it is actually looked down upon.
Take Care,
Kangy

Re: Chivalry and Respect
What happened to you is an extremely rare circumstance. I've never experienced it, but I've heard of it happening to people before. Think about it, though- how many people have you ever held the door open for? How many acted like that lady?
When feminism and girl power and all that started taking major root in society's consciousness, that may have been a much more prevalent attitude. I don't know, I wasn't alive 30-35 years ago. Still, given that we tend not to hear about things like that happening back in the day, I'm inclined to believe it was still a small portion of women that acted so shitty.
Then again, in my experience, people are always holding the door for each other, so who knows.

you need a good cock punching...
as for chivalry, im all for it. i was raised an a household with two older sisters, my mother, and grandmother. my dad set a good example, and i learned RESPECT. that's all it is. simple respect goes a long way in the world.
as for other people, it's not that they need to learn chivalry, it's that they have NO CLASS. classless bastards with no respect, thats what people these days are turning into.
if i so much as hear of someone being disrespectful of a woman, or someone whom i respect (men, women, whoever), it makes me lose all respect for them. if i have no respect for someone, then i don't feel bad about being disrepectful to them. i won't feel bad about saying that they need a good cock punching, or that they're on the same level as a retarded gorrilla.
respect is becoming scarce these days, especially among young men, and it's starting to become a problem. people today need to learn some respect.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
Yes Spiffy I do agree that what happened to me with that lady is a rare circumstance. I tried to use it as an example of what I was trying to get at but I think that it kind of veered it off track instead.
I was trying to get at what seems to be the overall attitude of people these days. Yes that is the first time that has happened to me but how many times to you hold the door open for some one and get a simple thank you or even a nod from them. This attidude is really seen on the roads. It may just be in phx but drivers here are fucking ignorant. They are in such a rush that they don't care who they cut off or if someone almost gets rammed into the wall on the free way because they wouldn't let them ahead of them.
People don't seem to care about anyone but themselves anymore. Overall they don't know the meaning of respect.
and luketalbot99 from what I understood of your poorly structured half assed post. You were trying to say that I am being too picky? I am not trying to say that everyone has to be like that. I don't take offense to people like that I am not being picky I am just noticing that overall chivalry and respect is dead. Yes I may not know what kind of experiences that woman has had with men in her life. That is probably where that came from. You are missing the point that it isn't just that lady it overall. Yes times change but I think that on this aspect they have changed for the worst.
Take Care,
Kangy

Oh ya and to answer your question. NO I don't want to hear what you think. Just from reading this I can tell that you are one of the people that are blind to this matter and you have not idea what so ever about what I am talking about. You are one of the people that when respect is brought up you just scratch your head because you have never heard of it and wouldn't know it if it bit you in the ass.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
I think it depends where you are. Down here, people are pretty rude but in some northern states I've noticed there's a friendly vibe. People say thank you and ask how you are etc.
As far as chivalry, my b/f has opened my car door since we started going out. He opens the door for me when we go out but sometimes, if I'm in the position, I'll open and hold the door for him. I always say thank you or give him a smile and kiss. People in parking lots have commented on him opening my car door before. It's just not expected anymore, people are always in a rush to get anywhere and don't think about it.
When I hold doors for people it's not neccessarily a sign of respect, it's more just helping out. When someone have their hands full, I'll jump up to help them. It's not a big deal and usually both parties walk away with a smile on their face.
When I go for a walk I always smile and say hello to people I pass. When I'm waiting in line at the store I'll talk to someone else in line or sometimes the clerk. People are in a better mood after talking to a random stranger. Maybe it's because it's not expected, people appreciate it more.
Common courtesy and having a positive attitude in public would make this world such a better place. Too many people are too sullen. It's not wonder though, we grew up being told not to talk to strangers and keep to ourselves.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
How 'bout we start off by completely ignoring Fuck-Face (yes, that's you luketalbot99 -- you ignorant fucktard)up there. Next, onto the post:
Chivalry is dead.
This is not to say that day to day civility still exists amongst societies better citizens, but all-in-all, it is dead.
I am a 14 year old male who was brought up to hold the door open for anyone, not specifically women, just because it was polite. There was a bitch at my school who, when I opened a door for her one time, stood in front of the open door, staring at a small point of nothingness in front of her, and coldly said "I don't need to have any boy hold the door open for me... ladies first." Now I had no intention of letting her get to me, so I just sat there for a few minutes -- after all, it was me who had the door to lean on for this brief period of time. In a minute, she finally gave up, sighed disdainfully, and walked in, shooting me a 'dirty look'. The bitch isn't even close to having rights of her own as a minor, much less as a 'woman'.
I have met plenty of people who graciously thank me and return the favor and whatnot if I hold the door open for them, but too many people think of me as a doorman, yelling "Hold up!" from 50 feet away, walking leisurely across the distance as if I was getting paid to hold their door open for them.
My father is a pig-fucker(tm). He has no sense of chivalry, and expects all humans to bow down to him as if he were God, and thinks women should do so most of all, as they are only sex toys in his mind. I find this disgusting, because, not only is he an arrogant son-of-a-bitch, but it was only recently that my mother informed me that it was polite to stand up when a women approaches or leaves a table. I was furious that my father, never one to physically exert himself for anyone, had not set the example and showed me this. I felt awful that for the entirety of my life, I had not shown this respect for women. I am furious at my father because now, standing up is not a habit, and so many times I forget to do so, and only afterwards do I remember, and scold myself sternly.
I have no qualms about being polite or holding doors open, I just wish that more people would do it. And not just for me, I just wish that the human race would be a little more kind towards their fellow 'man'

Re: Chivalry and Respect
I live in England, men often hold doors open for me but it happens a lot more when I'm wearing a short skirt... Chivalry or trying to get lucky??
Chivalry is great and I think the majority of women appreciate it (apart from feminists who are more often than not lesbians) but theres a fine line between being chivalrous(sp?) and being obsessed, for example beating the shit out of someone to rescue a damsel in distress is great, but starting on someone for looking at your girlfriend in the wrong way is just weird.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
How would that make you sexist if you held the door for a women?
I respect anyone to a point, but once they say something in a serious tone about my life being fucked up in a serious tone of voice, there goes my respect. I'll say something back as dis-respectful if not more. Just how I am, I'll treat you how I want you to treat me.
Sometimes I'll look the other way and let karma get her/him.
I don't usually fight over a girl, and I know I have a topic saying I'm gonna kick this dudes ass, but I never liked him to beging with so now I have a reason to kick his ass.
Yeah chivalry is gone, out of all of my friends I am the most loving to my girlfriends when I have one. I'll be polite and curtious and all that good stuff, but I'll be a smart ass sometimes, but just to joke around.
It's gone because people are not so open minded as they were back then. People actually cared about strangers more than they do now.
This reminds me of something that happened to my dads friend. A guy got in an accident my dads friend tried to save him (CPR he is trained in it), but the guy died, the mans family tried to sue him, but the good samaritim law helped him. The people over looked the fact that he tried to save him and look onto the fact that they could get rich off of him, shows how much they cared for him the money they could have got was more important than the fact that a complete stranger tried his best to save the guy.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
I remember an old Brady Bunch episode where Marcia was dating Greg's football rival, who drove her home from school. He got out of the car, and Marcia just sat there while he walked all the hell the way around the car (those were some big sedans back then) to open the door for her. That seemed to be a dorky thing to do, to just sit there and wait for the door to be opened. Do people still do this?
In real non-car life, sometimes a guy (stranger) will hold a door open for me when I wasn't quite ready to exit, perhaps because I was fumbling for keys, sunglasses, arranging packages, whatever. Then I feel pressured to exit and inevitably drop something, which they don't pick up for me.
Sometimes, it's just about perception and timing.
And "reciprication" is the sincerest form of chivalry, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
My dad used to make my mom stay in the car until he got out and went around to open the door for her. That seems positively inane. As for opening the car door when getting in.. it's a nice thought, but when you've got a two-door Neon in a parking lot, the space gets way too cramped to be doing that shit.
As for opening doors.. if you're behind a girl, do you bolt ahead of her in order to open the door for her? I don't. That seems silly too, but maybe some people still do it. I just let her open it and push it further open once I'm within arm's reach (most girls are shorter than me, so I can go over their shoulder/head to do it).
Come to think of it, I don't think chivalry or honor is dead in theory.. it seems like people are simply more pragmatic about those things now. There's a certain politeness involved, but if you can open a door yourself, go right ahead.

i like having the door held open for me! But i dont expect or ask for it....
I think the whole point of ' modern' chivalry is to show the girl that you are not a pig, and that you like her.... That you can think of someone else besides yourself....
and some doors are really heavy!

Re: Chivalry and Respect
This is just my opinion, but I think that people being told that they're the most important person and they should look out for theirself and no one else may have changed the way people view chivalry.
Or if that statement made no sense, I basically see the "Me first" mentality of many Americans having made respect and chivalry far less prevalent then it once was.
Feminism has also played a large part in the distortion of what people expect to be respectful or chivalrous (I have no clue if I even remotely spelled that as it should be.) Equal rights my ass. You can't have equal rights when you're not equal. Men and women are different, deal with it.

Yes it is mostly just a form of etiquette. It isn't something I do if it is just us and we are eating a casual meal at home or at a fast food place. It is mostly just something if you are at a respectable place then it is proper etiquette for the gentlemen to stand when one of the female guests leave from and return to the table.

Chivalry and respect don't attract women anymore. I hold the door for everyone, ladys always first, please, thank you, politeness, etc... The fact of the matter is, girls couldn't give a flying rats ass about that kind of stuff anymore. Infact, it often turns them off. If you are an asshole to a girl you like, chances are, she'll fall for you. If you are incredibly nice, polite, and demostrate chivalry, she will just want to be friends if not hate you. This world is truely fucked up. Life will never pass up a chance to bend over and ass rape a nice guy...

i have this all figured out. after thinking about it, i realized just why chivalry is dead.
women like assholes.
plain and simple, this is the reason. women like insensative assholes who show them no respect. assholes get women, and then all the stupid fuckers who look up to the assholes emulate them. they then start being mean, and condesending, and get women; thus spreading it like a contagious disease.

I think this is an excellent post. BTW I almost always show respect to anyone, even people younger than me. I hold doors and stand up when the girl leaves or comes to the table and I take off my hat. But very few people still have respect, take luke for example. He is a belligerent asshole that has no respect and will probably beat his wife or rape women. So luke, go fuck yourself, and stop attacking kangy, cause you are too low for even him to flame you, and that is BAD. He is one of the most intelligent posters on totse.

Don't forget, it also helps to get girls if you are abusive, condecending, innatentive, and only in it for the sex.
And if you think being chewed out by some random person for holding a door is bad, I've been smacked. Twice. Big ring.

If a girl hit me for holding a door open for her, I'd either hit her back or push her over.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
I disagree with many people here, CHIVALRY, HONOR, AND RESPECT ARE NOT DEAD. They will never die as long as there are people around still practice them. Those who like me are sad to see them going, teach them to the young men and women. Sure the failure rate for such teaching is high, but to see a young person you helped train succeed is an amazing feeling.
After observing men and women these many years I can truly say; Women do like assholes, but only to play around with. When the woman of your dreams finally does decide to seek out a real relationship, she will be looking for that old fashioned respect and chivalry. Be the one guy in town with these qualities and you cant fail.
BTW guys; spontaneously kissing the lady's hand is a great tactic. They are shocked by the shear old fashioned romanticness of it. Not many guys do it now days.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
I really hope chivalry is not dead. I know that women are all, "yay, womens rights!" and everyone should be equal, but guys are stronger and were sort of meant to take care of the girls. I want to find a guy that will open the door for me occaisionally. I dunno, i'm just a 'fucktard' i guess.

Chances are she just had a really bad day...she lashed out at you as a result and then you knock her out...talk about turning the other cheek.

Re: Chivalry and Respect
I think that the reason "chivalry" is dying (note: has not yet died) is:
1: What is intended to be chivalric is often misinterpreted as the guy trying to ingratiate himself.
2: "Chivalry" is seen as being part of the old system of social sexism - like the glass ceiling, etc. - which should be done away with.
3: People who recieve help (e.g. door opening) often show no gratitude. This is probably because of reason 1 or 2, or because the receiver /expects/ to have things done for them.
The concept of "chivalry" is a social contract. Men display chivalry, women display gratitude in some way. In the words of Scott Adams: "The deal is OFF!"
