Is lighting my room with candles better for the environment?
A quick question. At night, I like the soft glow of a candle rather than artificial light. I usually only have one on.
Is this better for the environment, or worse for it? Not really too concerned, just a tad curious.

Re: Is lighting my room with candles better for the environment?
without looking at in detail, my gut instinct would say it's far better. a few candles would give out far less energy far more efficiently than lights ran off mains electricity. a candle really only lights a few square metres where it is needed, a lightbulb does an entire room.

Re: Is lighting my room with candles better for the environment?
Depends on the candle, parrifin is a fossil fuel, but beeswax is not. For actually light efficiency, it's hard to beat and LED. Strickly speaking any heat the candle generates, that less energy that is wated. I'm thinking that even a small incandescent bulb with equal light output would create less heat, so no not really.

Well...you've got to take the fire hazard into account too. Are you using parrafin or bees?
Have you seen the 'vegetable wax'? It's supposed to not give off some of the petroleum gases that parrafin does? It's about 4 times as expensive though.

WHAT ABOUT THE CO2 EMISSIONS, HUH? You're all alike the other greens, giving one shit about something but not another shit about anything else. If people still used candles global warming would've hit 5 decades ago.

You are so retarded, the co2 emissions for a factory contructing a lightbulb, the shipping of the lightbulb, and the generation of electricity to light the lightbulb, are FAR MORE than the co2 emmissions of the wick of a candle. That is quite obvious.

If you're going to use candles, go with the soy ones. Other candles release sulfer into the air.
They're also longer burning then paraffin candles, so it's a win-win.

Ryangeneral thinks the wick is fuel and the wax is there to slow the burning.

This is true. Because candles are created by fairies and delivered by unicorns instead of being produced in a factory and shipped to their destination.
Seems to me it takes a lot more material to create a candle than it does to create a lightbulb.
I don't care enough to try to find out CO2 emissions vs light output for both.

Bad argument.
Candles can be made from Bee's Wax.
Wax sold to craft store.
Middle aged crafty woman buys wax.
Melts down wax.
Pours in to mold.
Sticks wick in (may have former fixed up)
Lets it sit.
BAM candle.
Lets see you make a light bulb.

Right, so melting glass and molding platsic, in addition to the production of electric components if its a CFL, uses less energy then pouring hot wax into a mold.
Yep you can go get fucked.

What about the bees man? Nobody ever thinks about the bees.
But yeah... If you can get some number on how many/size candles you are going to be burning in like a month I could actually crunch some numbers.

You're going to make a comparative study?
Good luck.

*Waits until a Mr. Science comes by and tells everybody about how much energy in J is used up by a candle, bulb and an LED, and how much light they acutally give off, and how much energy is wasted into nonlight forces such as heat*

we need the answer in terms of enviromental impact.
but i have three analytical lab reports to write up, ill tackle it later in the week if no one beats me to it.

But the ironic thing is that we are using more energy then a lightbulb and a candle combined by arguing about which uses more energy on our computers

Only on weekend when you have been around lamps/ fluorescents, 5 days a week, 9 to 5 sort of thing... its a more natural organic light source...

Re: Is lighting my room with candles better for the environment?
This whole candle-burning concept strikes me as absurd...
Such a gross misdirection of concern...
So you want to save energy by burning candles?
Then you go out and drive around? throw packaging away?don't have a garden? Buy the occasional fast food bullshit or bag of chips? Leave all that trash on the side of the road?
Come on... do somehting that actually matters.

Well said--not to mention the fact the the juice to run the light bulb most likely comes from a coal-fired generating station, which puts mega-tons of carbon dioxide into the air.

hell, one of those mantle propanie lanterns would be better for the environment then using electricity, unless you know the electricity is produced by clean energy means, such as hydro wind, or solar.

You really are one stupid old piece of shit.
Do you not think that a candle burning puts evil CO2 in the air? Did you pass high school chemistry? Or did they even teach chemistry back then in the 1800s when you were in school?

The emissions from anything you use to light your room are insignificant next to those produced by an automobile to drive to the candle shop. A CFL will last until you break it and inhale the mercury and phosphor dust.
