Default New links

I added links for totse.MeetUp.com, bookmarking an article using del.icio.us, and submitting a page to digg.com to the top of every page. (The pages are still being transferred to the live site -- it will take a few hours before all pages are updated.)

Hopefully I fixed all of the bugs. It took a while to get the code to work with the BBS system.

Well, at least it is an update. If only you were around more. Why are you gone so often? People must know. We know you don't have a real life, as that is impossible for any totse member (especially the creator) to have.

We need a new forum. However, since most modern forums use a MySQL database, it would be really hard to convert the current flat file database to MySQL. I say we just delete this forum and install something like UBB.threads. Screw all of the converting databases and lost information, we can deal with a few years loss of information for a new forum software.

Go Jeff.

Also, please let me know any way I can digitally send you the $110 discussed in the last thread.

I'd much rather NOT send cash in the mail. Last time I did that, it never got to its destination.

If theres any possible way I can do this without sending cash in the mail, please let me know.

Why have them if they're going to be disabled by the end user in the first place?

Jeff,

As you may be aware there is an anti-terrorism publication in Australia. It has an image of someone on the internet...The website the user is looking at is clearly Totse. The image makes up a 'bigger picture' in piecing together a way of stamping out terrorism in Australia.

Assuming you gave no permission to use such a picture couldn't you approach this in some legal sense. Even if it is public domain or whatever you could probably argue that since the creation of the publication visits to totse.com have boomed and increased costs in maintaining the sites active status. Sue for damages?

I'm worried that digg will end up crashing Totse. Loads of sites go down because they get dugg, they have a hell of a lot of users and it can place a strain on bandwidth, especially if people start digging any old thread they find funny.

Him and J.C maybe... the ads aren't that bad, they help him pay so WE can use &t for free... I don't mind the odd add, if you have time for Totse, you have time to hit an extra button. I'm curious though, what in paypal says that you can't use it? ( I remember reading that it's against their terms to use it on this site, just want to know why )

Edit : Also... totse meetup threads are being locked... but it's ok to have them like that?

Because I sense that you have already lost touch with them, as with the sponsored links, the re-direct ads, and the addition of the digg and the bookmark site. Which tells me in bright red, you need money.

What exactly is your plan? Alienating totse users even moreso than they already are? That's definitely not a good idea, as this BBS would just go ker-plunk under it's own weight.

I haven't been associated with totse very long, but I have been around long enough to witness many changes and shifts in certain attitudes. I can tell you this much, the totse that I signed up for happily, never had links that said "Help Getting Laid?" or "Dirty Little Secrets".

All of that, plus the advent of re-direct ads, what's next Jeff? Filling out surveys so we can post a reply to a thread? Or wanna-be members completing "offers" before they can join?

If you need money, either accept the usual payments (paypal, M.O., CC, or whatever), or devise some way to keep it anonymous, or the money flowing directly to an account exclusively for totse. A very large percentage of members would be more than willing to contribute to the cause and then some, including me.

I mean, if you expect us to go through all these ads, sponsored links, etc, why haven't you done anything with the site or the forums? It seems only right that we should at least get high speeds or half-way modern software if we have to suffer through the same injustices that a site like ebaumsworld or similar would put us through.

Sorry to rant, but on the far cry that you read this, I hope it at least makes you think.

Jeff, totse.com is really going down hill lately. As I am sure you have heard this before, it is really true now, this is coming from someone who has been on totse as a regular member since 2000. I have seen totse go up at times, and be really low at others. Right now, totse is probably as low as it can get.

Recently, I was checking out totse and a few other sites that are well known. SomethingAwful, The Best Page in the Universe, and a few others. I noticed that both The Best Page in the Universe AND SomethingAwful have MUCH more traffic than totse. Even though I really hate SomethingAwful, they have a great system of not having ads and redirects. They pay around $2,000 per month for bandwidth. They actually make money from user accounts. If the forum software was updated, and user accounts could be purchased (premium accounts, not all accounts should be paid) then totse could probably make a lot of money from that alone. Please, if you could, take off the "Sponsered Links" as well as the redirects. The Sponsored Links make totse load even slower than it does already, and the redirects means you have to load even ANOTHER page just to see the content.

Now, I am one of the most loyal fans of totse, and have loved it since I found it. Lately I have been posting a lot less and even considered leaving totse until things were corrected. This would be a bold move from me, as I have grown up on totse, and owe a lot of thanks to the users here for teaching me a lot more than most schools could teach me, but lately the ads and redirects have been so annoying that I really am coniderding find a new home on the internet.

Jeff, if you do read this, please take it into consideration and hopefully make some changes to totse.

RIGHT ON!

I'd be glad to give a little money to the ol' &T if we could ditch those stupid ads.

Yeah, those ones right there ---->

And those stupid redirects. Although I find it funny when I click on a thread like "LOL STUPID NIGGARS" and get redirected to the "racism song" ad.

Default Re: New links

Something that has REALLY made me suspect that the ads have made an extremely slippery slope is that every type of them is percieved universally as bad.

A sizable portion of the userbase of totse knows how to get free porn and that pheremones dont work (as seen in several threads several months ago in S&A).

I am really afraid that the adverts arent going to stop and this is the tip of the iceberg.

Perhaps its just me, but being on totse has made me know that "Tina's free webcam" is nowhere near as good as empornium and puretna.

2000 free products? Totse has made me believe that no one offers anything for free on the web anymore. DHL doesnt even send their boxes half the time...

Real Sex Pheremones have been shown not to work.

Dirty Little Secrets.... I dunno

Ahh, here we are. Most of totseans can probably use these: Find Local Girls for Sex and Help Getting Laid?

Sorry for the cynicism, but thats what totse makes you.

=============================================

Its sad, but I think its true, this advertisement system isnt going to stop, and in my opinion, it only cheapens the look of our beloved site.

When I come to totse, I see old software, but its unique in that respect. UBB ensures that sigs and avatars are never paraded like your posts should be.

In anther respect, perhaps our software is analogous to modesty and others with "features" is whoredom in today's society?

It does pain me to say it, but I also think that if we were to move on to a user-supported system with premium accounts, that we still wouldnt get enough userbase simply because of our old software.

I think its entirely possible. Look at SG. The normal age of ttse has declined from years past. Pre-18's also tend to have no money, so no support there.

*sigh*

Back to ads: first we had the banners, then the side ads, and now full-blown redirects. This is telling me that the situation has only gotten worse.

In one respect thats a good thing, as it means that if Jeff's income has been the same, then our userbase has grown greatly.

That could also be bad: Jeff's income has declined and our userbase is still growing.

Whatever course of action you decide on, Jeff, please listen to people who sincerely want to help out. Much of your userbase would be glad to help you out with subscriptions.

And can you please let normal admins control registration? pweeeeeeeese?

I love del.icio.us and I love &TOTSE!

This is just great.

But WhyTF are the only banner adds ever for either &TOTSE, T-shirt Hell, or Some Crazy Drug info Site? Where are the adds for crazy gadets and like DIY kits and bomb making kits! Thats wat would apeal to alot of the crazier &TOTSE users like myself.

Check Paypal's Acceptable Use Policy. Specifically the sections on "Encouraging Illegal Activities" and "Mature Audiences".

I would argue that the pages on totse do NOT encourage illegal activities, but somehow I doubt that Paypal corporate would see it that way.

Regarding the part on "Mature Audiences", we'd have to delete the entire Erotia section to comply with that.

Just because the First Amendment says that we have a right to free speech doesn't mean that companies like Paypal are required to do business with us if they don't like what we're saying.

Also... totse meetup threads are being locked... but it's ok to have them like that?

I don't know why they're being locked. When a moderator asked me about Meet Up way back when, I said "That's kinda cool."

I would guess that one or more moderators are concerned that someone is using the "totse" name in a way that could get this site in trouble. I agree that that is a concern in a lot of cases, but in the case of Meet Up I'm not too worried about it. Getting together face-to-face has been a totse tradition since the very beginning. Meet Up helps facilitate more face-to-face meetings, and I think that's a good thing. (Hence the link at the top of every page.)

with the sponsored links, the re-direct ads, and the addition of the digg and the bookmark site. Which tells me in bright red, you need money.

Money is always helpful. The people who host the servers don't accept love offerings, burnt animal sacrifices, or glass beads. They want cash to keep hosting the servers.

I'm not quite sure how you reach that bright red conclusion though. I'm using del.icio.us and Digg to help promote the site. I do things to help promote the site, that's one of my many jobs. More users doesn't necessarily mean more money though, it just means more people sucking more bandwidth.

A more reasonable conclusion might be that I just got a better deal on more bandwidth.

quote:

I can tell you this much, the totse that I signed up for happily, never had links that said "Help Getting Laid?" or "Dirty Little Secrets".

totse has always had a mix of the profound, the profane, and the pornographic. At one time the BBS had ads for porn sites on the banner and sidebar. If these links are offending your good taste I'm sorry, but those advertisers pay for the free service that YOU USE.

Are you sure you don't have trouble getting laid? The ads are targeted to a precise audience, so if those are the ads you're seeing...

quote:

If you need money, either accept the usual payments (paypal, M.O., CC, or whatever), or devise some way to keep it anonymous, or the money flowing directly to an account exclusively for totse. A very large percentage of members would be more than willing to contribute to the cause and then some, including me.

What pisses me off is that if I EVER got rid of the ads and instituted some sort of membership policy (which I am seriously considering) I would get ten times as much hate mail from the user base whining "How can you charge me $1? Waaaa! totse should be FREE for EVERYONE!"

There are a lot of things I would like to do. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do everything I want to do because I have a job and it takes up a huge amount of my time. If totse made enough to pay for itself that would be great. If it made enough to pay for my time I'd quit my job and do this full time.

Regarding your gripe on the redirect ads: I don't like them either. They should be set up to be MINIMALLY INTRUSIVE, meaning that you should only see one redirect ad in a 24 hour period. If that's not what you're seeing let me know.

I am testing them out to see how well they perform money-wise compared to the other ads. At first they were paying quite well. totse was actually paying for itself for about a week. Since then the revenue they're generating has fallen off, so they may not be here for long.

Jeff, I highly suggest merchandice to help generate money. I remember the Cafepress page, which didn't get many sales at all. I believe this is because the designs were plain and dull. I know for a fact if they had better ideas, they could make a ton of money. Look at Maddox (http://maddox.xmission.com). He makes enough money from his store alone to pay for his site, as well as pay for his living conditions. SomethignAwful (http://somethingawful.com) also has a store, and they make damn good money off of it (as if they don't make enough from user accounts, but that is a seperate issue). I think that if you made some creative clothing, stickers, etc. that totse could make a good amount of money off of the sales, at least enough to be able to take down the redirect ads. I would be so confident that the clothes would sale, I would personally send money to help fund the start of a clothing line.

Also, I have noticed a few updates to the forums and site (small, but still updates) the last few weeks. I can only guess this is because you may have had a break from work, or have had ideas to work on totse. Does this mean that you may become more acitve on the site more, maybe even posting in regular forums again?

More than once I suggested we make new stuff for the store. Have each mod send in ideas for a shirt or something. If your thing is weapons and combat, have something weapons and combat related on the shirt. Go the way 2600 did and make some sort of useful fact on the shirt. For example, a popular 2600 shirt had the blue box plans on it. Maybe a weapons and combat shirt could have some sort of slogan with some gun or knife info. I dont know, im just throwing things out here. Anything would be better than whats in there now.

+1 to you for your keen observation skills. But try making a thread about porn in S&A and count how many seconds it takes before being locked.

Fact of the matter is that the porn thread in IFIOTW generally has more posts than half a dozen of the quiet forums, after a few months.

There is clearly the demand for a porn forum, and additionally it would increase traffic on the site overall. Just makes sense.

I disagree with anyone who thinks there should be a so called 'porn forum'. There's S&A to ask questions, and there is IFIOTW including its offical Porn Thread and the archived topic with all the links.

If you want to get down to the nitty gritty there is also Moving Pictures for anything besides stills.

What moronic reasoning. I already made this point - try posting porn links anywhere outside the porn thread in IFIOTW and it'll be deleted. There's nowhere to post the stuff OTHER than the porn thread. It acts as a mini-forum, but is horrendously organised and utilised because it's simply a thread.

I'm planning on sending you a publication which has a full page advert of that terrorism piece.

When I get a redirect ad, they come in waves. I'll hit the back button to go back to totse, then another one, and then another one. The only way to fix it is to reload totse or get adblock for firefox.

Jeff, I demand to know your opinion on the totse WhatPulse (http://whatpulse.org/stats/teams/9300) team. You seem to support the Folding@Home, but I suspect this is because it is helpful to scientific studies on protein folding. However, the totse WhatPulse team is just for fun and I am not sure if it meets your approval. We will still do it either way, but I would still like to know your opinion on it.

Also, as I am sure you know (from the gigantic thead in IFIOTW), the totse team has made a fairly large and reconizable logo on Drawball (http://drawball.com) and I would also like to see your opinion on that.

Finally, since you seem to need some money, I will send about $50 in the mail with a note that has my email on it. If you do recieve it, I'd like an email, if you don't, then I will know not send money in the mail anymore, as it would just be a waste.

I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with premium accounts. Even though it would bring in probably more than enough revenue to cover the bandwidth of Totse, I think that making premium accounts that you pay for will separate users and divide Totse in half, those who pay, and those who don’t. I can picture the “I pay and you don’t so you can’t say what’s wrong and what’s right! neener neener!!!” comments happening already

(well not so much the “neener neener”), and a never ending argument that would just keep coming up.

And as for the forum software updating, I’m all for it, but I would hate to see the old Totse left behind as a new generic forum is made with avatars and all that useless crap that just slows everything down.

So if any changes are made, I’d start with the damn profiles and how the emails don’t show up on them. That’s been broken ever since I can remember, but that’s good old Totse for ya!

i think each poster should have a rating system like digg.com does. That would have very interesting effects.

You could limit each ip to one vote per user per day.

You could even have an algorithm that calculates flood control time based off your rating

So about the ads.....See ad creep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_creep) and the links on the page as well.

What ads? (http://adblock.mozdev.org/)

Heh, exactly. Firefox+AdBlock, optionally also FilterSet.G Updater and CustomizeGoogle. When using AdBlock with FilterSet.G don't forget that you need to put filters you add into both AdBlock and FilterSet.G user-defined filter lists. Set Firefox to keep cookies until you close it and you can set exceptions of course. This shoudld help against tracking cookies.

For the power users there's NoScript, Cookie Button in the status bar (with cookies blocked by default), and Modify Headers (to remove referer, accept, accept-charset, accept-language, and change user-agent to IE's). This way you can block annoying ad scripts, tracking cookies, and other BS altogether, but still be able to make whitelists.

Add to that Passive Cache and SessionSaver and you're set for a nice Internet experience with almost no ads (usually the ones you see are hosted by the site you're on, and to block all you have to do is add another filter) and a bit more privacy.

If only capitalism were driven by ethical consumerism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethical_consumerism) than conspicuous consumption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspicuous_consumption). See also AdBusters (http://www.adbusters.org/home/) and AdBusters on WikiPedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adbusters).

Goddamn! For Free?!!

I thought the picture of the guy with the camera spying on the power plant with the big ol "No Trespassing" right in front of him was hilarious. Who steals information from power plants these days? Its so cold war'ish. And what can you get from a picture of the building? Haha.

Anyways the title of the thread looks like it has bomb in it, I dont think its a good image of totse Especially being that its along with a bag left conveniently i nthe MIDDLE of a hallway!! Or the mysterious BOX under the chair!!

Vote yes to the cartoons

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/vote.aspx?qid=2106

An Australian newspaper plans to publish a new cartoon series of the evil Prophet MohaMAD (piss be upon him). But before sending these Cartoons to the publication department, they have asked people for a referendum at their website. To stop this publication, the evil needs 3000000 Signatures against, they already have over 2 million signatures against. Here is the link. Vote YES for this righteous act.

=====> http://news.ninemsn.com.au/vote.aspx?qid=2106

Don't hesitate to Vote YES for free speech & please Forward this message to all your non-muslims friends.
