While I do agree with closing registrations, why not (for a limited time) make every new user email an admin stating that they would like to become a member?

Once the admin determines that the new user does not sound like a complete idiot, the admin can activate the new user's account.

What do you guys think of this idea?

In theory its fine and dandy, but as you've seen Jeff doesnt check his mail very often and even if he checked it every day, thats still alot of people he has to approve and then allow in manually. Its not efficient enough to be a plausible solution.

There are more admins than Jeff. They could set up a specific email such as 'register@totse.com' and each admin would have to read a certain amount each day.

This seems to be a good alternative to closing down the registrations, IMO. Although, if this wouldn't work, I support acidmelt!

Alot of proposals here to limit the number of kidiots are good ideas but remember this is a free speech website, and by judging intellegence by grammer and spelling you limit the scope of people and there is always the possibility of blocking someone who would otherwise contribute to totse.

Also if people had to email an admin to register whats to stop them from spamming the admin.

Maybe if we closed registration near when school is out it would limit the number of people who are just here because they think they are cool because they just started going through puberty.

There is 75+ new registrations a day, I don't think the admins want to check hundreds of e-mails a week to determine if a user will be good enough for Totse, so I don't think that's a good idea.

I think moderators should have the power to ban people, even if it is a temporary ban it will stop spam attacks quicker than usual.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that the current UBB doesn't support this, but it would be pretty cool if mods/admins could declare a 'state of emergency' type thing on a certain forum. During this time, only members who have been members for longer than a week will be able to post.

That way, if a spammer's first account gets banned, he can't just use a proxy and register a new account and continue spamming.

If only the UBB supported it, all our problems would be solved.

Oh yeah, and I think that mods should be able to ban people. Except meta, I think his daughter should be raped by random things.

I like the panic button idea angustheotherwhitemeat suggested, but I dont know of any forum software that does this.

They've been happening ALOT recently, and usually are solved within an hour and happen the next day. But last night was just a joke. I along with most people it seems gave up and clicked the 'X' at the top of the screen.

How about banning a few email domains. I know that happened with AOL before. Ban the disposable ones. Ban mailinator, and all these (http://email.about.com/cs/dispaddrrevs/tp/disposable.htm). That ought to make it a little bit harder to register multiple accounts. Just don't close registration.

But, with the amount of invites Gmail gives everyone with an account, i'm guessing they use that, and if not, they will.

And we can't exactly ban Gmail as i'm sure it's what a good 80% of totse use. Including myself.

Then hack the fucking computer with there IP adress using routers. It would be really hard, but if you wana shut them down...you gotta go to the source.

Are you sure? I thought that was fixed when totse came back up after winter, and registrations opened again. Wasn't there a thing about how we couldn't open registrations because the mail confirmations wouldn't go anywhere?

Personally, I don't know why Jeff ever took away the admins' ability to close registration during spam attacks. Sure, it may have been left off too long a couple of times, but wouldn't it be easier to talk to the admins about this instead of taking away one of their only semi-effective defenses for major spam attacks? The spam in SG has just been getting worse, and will probably continue to get worse for as long as school is out and the idiots need someone to terrorize in place of their teachers. .

I',m serious, but leave registration open and let them spal to their content in SG, better than the steps some want to place in.

Maybe you could make it so you have to wait ten days or so until your forum account is activated? This might deter some spammers, though some might just sign up for 20 accounts and wait ten days...

Someone metioned this a while ago and it should kill a dececnt amount of the spammers/trolls: Make it so it takes a week to approve registration. That way, some of these spammers with a 5 minutes attentions span will give up and forget. This obviously wont prevent all of it, but it would definitely help. Another thing- maybe make it so you can delete old accounts, and make it impossible to register two accounts on the same IP at the same time. This way if someone wanted a new account, all they would have to do is delete the old one. Again, this wouldn't prevent all spam, but it's one step closer. To be honest Jeff has to quit messing around and UPDATE from this current version of UBB. It lacks a lot of features, some of them are bloat but many are quite useful such as the separate forums and all. A new members forum would work great. Any potential spammers and tr0lls would have a lot of hurdles to cross.

HLA is a minium standard reguarding how well Department of Defense simulations inter communicate. Its designed specifically for simulation applications, and is an improvement over the old standards that were not compatible when changes to the original system were made. HLA is all encompassing, and can rapidly evolve to its changing environment. Now more, newer, and constantly changing simulations can interact and still be monitored for quality on a consistant scale, making the systems reusable ad infinum. No, what I was saying was, if there's two different accounts and two different IPs/proxies, for all they know those ARE two seperate people with seperate accounts. Obviously if they somehow implement that system the spammers will just start having multiple accounts.

Closing registration is a temporary solution, and can't work in the long term. Plus if these spammers have any intelligence whatsoever they'll already have multiple accounts saved up (same for many posters).

In short, there's no simple cure-all solution. Managing a forum this large is a very, very difficult task. Maybe if you took the IRC approach and had numerous half-mods and the like... but that would need a forum software upgrade.

Edit: Actually, that's an idea... closing registration until you can negotiate an upgrade that can put a stop to these spammers for good. Still, not too likely.

Begin writing new forum software with the following functionality:

-Blocks posting from all known proxies

-Has the Captcha feature that theSpam suggested. For those of you that don't know, a Captcha is simply a bunch of letters and numbers that are distorted so a human, but not a computer, can read them. This is often used by free email account providers to prevent automated registrations.

-Has the "panic button" that angustheotherwhitemeat suggested. The panic button would simply stop users who had registered in the past 60 days from posting new threads.

With these three features, totse could block any scripted attack (with the Captchas), and if someone decided to spam, we could easily IP ban them as most proxies would be blocked. Furthermore, if all of this fails for some reason, a mod could press the panic button until an admin was on the scene.

This solution keeps the totse community open to all while purging it of these spammers.

Hey mods! If you ban proxies what will happen to the people whose ISP's use transparent proxies to connect to the internet? We won't be able to use totse even if we have our connection settings in firefox or IE set to connect directly to the internet! Because the proxies are on the ISP servers and they use them to manage traffic. So its outside of our control. Some websites seem to think I'm running a proxy and some don't. I'm set to connect directly to the internet. So for the user's who's ISPs use transparent proxies do you think you could make sure the script allows transparent proxies?

I think you have the best idea here. That would suck for some people (the newly registered that arent Trolls) but ya know what? Who cares. The Panic! button would only be till the admin was on scene right? Actualy it should be to were ONLY an admin could turn off the panic! button once pressed.

I'm all for a probation period of two weeks or less when registering. It worked wonders for roguesci.org forums.

Alas, roguesci is now mostly dead except for a handful of people but that was due to their strict compliance policies and their policy of never bringing up a topic twice, you had to instead only discuss it in prior threads or risk the consequences. The site design has also significantly changed there since I joined but I never posted. Actually I'm rather surprised it still exists, but I'm getting rather off-topic here.

Otherwise, much as many on totse, they'd die to spread information freely.

I have an idea, but I don't have a clue whether it's already in use. But fuck it, here goes.

Basically, the mods should all get together and draw up a timetable - so it works out that there is at least one mod keeping an eye on things every hour of the day. Time slots can be drawn up in the mod forum (if it exists, most forums have one), and can be discussed and traded .etc so that shit doesn't hit the fan when a mod has work/is on holiday/wants some free time or whatever. In order to prove that a mod has done his/her duty, each mod should be required to make a post every time they come on and check things in the mod forum, in order to see that everyone is doing their duty. Failure to do so = demodding.

Also, it might be handy to work out the average amounts of posts for each forum for each hour of the day. That way, the timetable can be drawn up in such a way that there is more mods when there's more users posting.

I know it's near enough impossible to block a full on spam attack until the spammer gets bored - given the current forum technology, but i'm sure the above procedures could help things out a bit. I know it's a bit far off, but maybe one of the admins should give out their password to a few of the trusted mods - that way, action can be taken a lot quicker.

Closing registration will fuck up totse. For every 20 users which are wankers - 1 might be a productive, useful members. I think it's worth putting up with a page of n00bish bollocks if it means seeing one decent post which will teach you something.

The other alternative of course, is a certain someone implementing some decent anti-spam measures for the board...
