This is an EXACT copy of the email that I sent to the moderators and administrators of totse. I thought that on this matter it would be best to share with the members what I shared with the administration.

But when people go to spurious to post threads called "What time is it where you are?" or "How long will it take for a mod to close this thread?" I think that it's going a bit to far. I also suggest that we re-order the forums on the index page. We've done this a few times for traffic reasons, and I suggest that we try it again. It's simply too easy to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and ignore the other forums (the same reason that we originally moved it from the top of the page).

Honestly, people do not know what B&M is for anymore. In fact, I talked to one of the spammers from the other day who tried to justify his actions by saying, and I quote, "But I believe this is spurious, aka trashcan where most of the shit that doesn't belong in bitch & moan goes."

So I suggest that we change the name and description of B&M to inform members that it's not JUST for bitching and moaning, but it's also where they can put their game threads, spam (not floods), and incomplete thoughts which would normally be closed.

In addition to moving things out of spurious and back into B&M, I suggest that (if we do go about this course of action) we make an official post in spurious (or place a forum header there temporarily) so that people will know that spurious is not simply totse's trash-can and that it was once the best conversationalist forum on totse and we do have intentions of keeping it that way.

So I know a lot of you don't post in spurious and many of you actually avoid it, but if you do frequent the forum or if you have seen its recent state, I would appreciate some feedback.

It doesn't make much of a difference to me about the order because Spurious is my homepage and that is the only forum I go into. At first I didn't liek Green Planet being at top but now that Bongman says that it is getting more traffic than ever than leave it.

I still wish we had some better moderators of Spurious. Red Raven is trying his hardest but it doesn't seem to be enough. Times like these I wish that more_cake was back in Spurious. I don't know where she has been lately.

I like your views on this.

If possible, it would be nice if we could have short-term banning. Something like, the moderators can ban a user for six hours or some number. That would stop a lot of users from posting dumb shit. The only hard part about that would be trusting the mods.

I know you said the name was temporary, but I think you should just call Half Baked "the Trashcan", or "the Sewer" or something along those lines.

Another idea might be to alter how 'hot topics' works.

I mean in the text archive it works well. But perhaps it should show random forums all the time when you're in the BBS, so rather than always getting spurious when you're in spurious you might get W&C or MS.

Just an idea anyway.

I'm in favor of this. Hell, I don't even know why I haven't been given a warning yet. I'm behaving myself here now, but I admit I've been an ass. It was me Zok quoted, and I did post 4-5 topics with a rhyme in them. A major problem though, are the numerous amounts of STFU's and lists of useless information copied off the net that are posted in these silly threads, making them stay on the first page much longer and annoying a great bunch of people. A major reason for this is (in my opinion, many will not agree) post count. Yes, post count. Many suck it up like it's a valuable thing. I've read hundreds of replies of 'STFU n00b, you only have ____ posts, or you've only been here since ____. What I'm trying to say here is that numerous people try to raise their post count by posting stupid shit, like a single smilie or the despicable 'bump'. What if post count were removed? What's it mean to people anyway? It sure as hell doesn't mean shit to me, and I couldn't care less if my post count didn't show. It'd eliminate about 10 'Yay! 1000th post!' threads a week, but it would also take away many people's badge of honor, making them normal posters like the rest.

And I talked about more and better moderators for Spurious too. It's highly unlikely thet I had anything to do with it. but when I looked at the new spurious I was glad to see Red Raven made his entry. He's active, fair, and knows how to deal with the shit. Zok told me only 4 mods per forum are allowed, and that's a pity for spurious. It was badly in need of more and better (read: more active. Not blaming Lordjugz, I just never noticed him.) moderators. From what I've seen now it looks pretty good, but there's still tons of crap in it. Red Raven talked about having closed/moved almost 80 threads since he was made mod of SG, and wanted a short-term banning system. That's the stuff I'd like to see. Say, a day, and after 3 short bannings you get a 'regular' banning approved by an admin, otherwise a mod may abuse this power. Not that I'm pointing fingers, but you have to deal with all possibilities.

On a side note: is it possibly to sticky certain posts? Of course only those by mods/admins, but it'd leave more of an impact there instead of being in the header.

But what is far more annoying are the posters who are spitefull and malicious and deliberately give false advice and information, yet have the inteligence not to spam or bring much Moderator attention to themselves.

These posters are hard to get rid of and tend to dig in rather like a shard of glass embeded deep within a wound.

Hey Zok, why dont you rotate DIY up near the top of the forum list. It may help to expose more people to the forum. You could also do this with the other forums that dont get too much traffic. I know I found alot of forums that I didn't know existed until just now.

Oh and I like the idea of the short term bannings. It would help make people more cautious as to what they post. Because with the way it is know only the Admins can ban, and the admins aren't around as much as the mods.

It has been stated before that the new forum order is a bit hard to get used to. In my case, all I have to do is put Backyard Ballistics directly under my totse hotkey, but I think ot can be quite frustrating for other members.

There's plenty of intelligent people outside of Spurious. I think Spurious is doing fine now with Red Raven a mod, but it could always be improved.

It is not just spurious that is suffering from morons. Here is an example.

Yoyo was actually making a point that was valid, but still managed to get flamed in News of the Temple. That has to say something about the quality that is coming out on these boards.

I definately agree with short term banning's, but I would be inclined to suggest a couple of day's or a week rather then just six hours. I doubt that six hours would be taken seriously.

More moderation would also be a good thing. Is it actually a script reason why there can not be more then four moderators to a forum?

Either way, I would also suggest an instant ban policey for flaming and wasting space in News of the Temple. Just to get rid of the people who like the gimmick of posting here.

As more and more of the general population gets aquainted with this "New Fangled Techie Stuff" (The Internet) The Internet will more and more resemble your real life stupid to intelligent ratio. As time progresses and the whole of the General Population of the planet is "Online" you can expect to see more and more stupidity, just like you do in real life now.

This is an opprotunity to up the level of Humanities Intelligence, rather than just ban, delete, flame, any other negative action, or even just create "Invite Only" Forums to get away from the "Idiots"; it would be a wise course of action to gently nudge them in the "Right" direction of learning.

In "Real" life it can be fun to poke fun, or just say something stupid every now and then for your own enjoyment, but do it enough and pretty soon your an outcast. The Internet equivilant would be "Banned".

This is one of the foremost "Free Speech" Boards out here in netland, you can say just about anything you damn well please here, but just as in "Real" life you can't scream "FIRE" in a crowded cinima and not get in trouble for it, there needs to be a limit in here also. But that limit does not include shutting the stupid people out, stupid people have thier piece to say and they can damn well say it if they want to. In "Real" life you do have a choice of whether or not to listen to it, you can just walk away, hang up the phone, turn off the TV etc.

It would be nice to have that option here also in the form of an "Ignore" button.

The temporary ban could sort out some of the crap, then you have the problem with someone just simply creating a new account. What if you made joining as a new user more inconvenient eg your system is setup to approve a new user by email in say 5 days instead of the current setup where you get an email with your password a few minutes after applying for an account, that would get rid of alot of users just creating accounts for the sake of being banned for a day.... it shouldn't deter anyone who is truly interested in joining totse

Ive got an idea. How about you guys set up an IQ test and a Proper Posting Quiz when a person is registering. That way, if they dont pass they cant get on, thus elminating idiots and spammers. The quiz's wouldnt have to be that long, just very precise and inquisitive in order to weed out the retards. This might solve another problem of ours as well. If someone passes, but still wants to spam, then we will see that its not that they dont know HOW to post they just choose to post incorrectly. We will see that they are not stupid, just lazy. Thus labeling them a spamming loser and in need of a short term to long term ban.

IQ tests are simply a test of the test, not of the person. Would take too long to set up and run properly, and undoubtly people would find a way to cheat.

Simple ways: Ignore idiot posters - don't reply to what they have posted if it is utter shit; as your mothers probably told you, if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all. Ok I've been reading Totse for over a year now but I've only just joined and wanted something cleared up. What is spurious acually for? I assumed it was just for idiots to spam me for being a n00b when i got round to joining.

Also, do any messages in totse ever get deleted? Couldn't mods just delete the spam as soon as it is made? Sorry if that sounds stupid or anything.

Seeing how spurious is going to shit these days, I've come up with a small idea:

Let every moderator have power in spurious.

I know the code only allows 4 per forum, but I'm sure it doesn't take that much of an effort to change that. There are moderators that visit and post in spurious all the time (LostCause, ILP, Dark_Magneto from time to time). Wouldn't it be a better place if they had power there? It wouldn't be their full-time moderating job, just a small sub-job. I don't think this would result in wars amongst mods about closing threads, because they're smart enough to know what posts to lock/move/delete. As long as they're fair (which they are) it would only benefit spurious.

I actually like some of the stupid forums on here. They make me laugh when i'm blazed.

They're so stupid it's funny, and the replies...Wow, if you think the post is stupid then simply dont reply. They might get the hint that it was a stupid question since they're gonna have zero replies all the time.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but wouldn’t it solve most spam problems if an extra user level was added like a guest or noob with restricted access with a max number of posts per a length of time or blocked from using anything but the basics. Then if a mod or admin thought the deserved it or a year passed since they registered they were promoted to regular. I realize it would be a lot of work if not impossible to do but as fare as I see it anyone who gets band can just register again under a different name and start again with the same level of access it isn't very effective.

I like the idea of giving like 3 warning bans and then banning a person for good. The issue is when they just make a new name so maybe you could just block people using the same email as a banned person from registering on totse.

I used to come onto totse on a daily basis, but in the past few months it has gone downhill at an exponential rate. This is the first time I've been on in a LONG time, and though I'm glad that your finally acknowledging the huge disease that has infected the totse community, I fear it is not enough.

This is was a perfectly good thread and had relatively meaningful posts, and it would have stayed that way a couple of months ago. But alas, totse's mods and admins are too nice and have allowed people to do stupid shit that completely lowers the intelligence of a thread or removes any point that the thread had. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the thread and, in my opinion, this person should be banned for purposely trying to make the thread worse. Once a couple dozen noobs are banned the others will get the message and stop posting stupid stuff in threads where stupid shit does not belong. Thats my two cents.

I thought that there would be some major changes to Totse and that it would become my home again, but it turns out that it has had two months and nothing has changed. Totse still sucks ass. Zok, keep trying to revive Totse, I think it could come back. But for now, I'm going to a better place. Suck my balls.

At that time someone had gotten my password and posted that. I would NEVR spam totse. It is my favorite forum and my home. I have now changed my password to something which even I don't know.

Damn straight. Totse has gone to shit lately. I generally don't post in spurious because of the fact that it's become trash. Even BLTC is starting to go down the drain, what with the random dxm threads, whose starters are well aware of the "Official DXM Thread" and even post that they know what they're doing is wrong and punishable by ban. And the SSRI bullshit really drags the place down.

I think the general summary of BLTC should state that one cannot get stoned or have any recreational effects from an antidepressant. Maybe it could include some links to erowid, shroomery, and rxlist? This could get rid of those arbitrary "ID THIS PILL" or "WILL THIS GET ME STONED?" threads.

I just realized, that this topic has been here since my 2nd day.

Well I was hoping for a wakeup from Zok long before this, I haven't been on this site in a long time... I guess I'll just leave for good as I think most of the people who spend their time bitching on this website should also do. There have been no changes that have effected the noob content so I guess it's time to give up.

I'll make one suggestion though, if you ever fix the site Zok, send an email to all members telling them that changes have been made and there will be measures set in place to control spamming. If this place ever returns to what it once was, I would like to come back here for more intelligent conversation, but as it stands I won't be coming back without notification.

There should be a section on everything, even spam or crappy content. But i think it's more of an issue of threads going in the correct category. Can't say you're a open source information site if you censor based on content, and not if it might be in the wrong section.

I think the forums should have sub forums. If your smart you'll figure this out easy enough.

We use UBB and we can't have sub-forums. UBB is too old and a peice of crap. We can't even have more than four moderators per forum.

hey I was wondering if you very generous people might be interested in making a musical forum where you can ask musical questions as in instruments, scales, etcetera

I know there is a rock forum but i think it'd be nice, like we could talk about the different courses on the internet for teaching people ''how to play the guitar'' and the like (and we could review them and previde assistances)

just a thought

I noticed there have been many replies here discussing the stupidity of some members of Totse. eg: pointless threads, etc.

That would be a good ideah, i would use it. I hope the mods will have think about it.

I really like the idea of the "3 warning bans" for about 12-24 hours and then after that a full out ban held out with permission from an administrator. I think that would help but like you guys said some mods who get mad easily might abuse the privelege *cough* Snoopy *cough*.

ZoK - may i suggest that all mods share responsibilities in problem forums? like since this is a crisis in spurious, could we possibly have all mods and possibly an admin monitoring spurious for a while - increased montoring could help us sort out users... hell so much of the responsible totse populatoin has actually sold their usernames because they are leaving...

if you read the "whose hot" post a while ago, 1 out of 3 hot young women has left this site... funny but i kind of enjoyed those conversations with them...

anyways consider upping moderator responsiblity for spurious... if anything i'd be glad to be a moderator for spurious and ONLY spurious... the caretaker if you will???

That wouldn't be too surprising, as most people today have computers with fast CPU's and lots of RAM. Those with somewhat older and weaker computers though will not be so glad.

you could just put a provisinal period where if they posted crap they get a 2-3 day ban, next 4-6 day ban, next forever and after they ha ve proved themselves they get 3 strikes and there out

all you would need to do is set it up in the faq,the registration rules and get more mods



also i agree to the short term ban thing after the provisional period is over not just like tallying it like its nothing

I think they need to be punished for their actions.

Rather than anything exclusionary, invite based, elitist or draconian, as I see it, the very best way to improve the forums is give the moderators the ability to ban for anywhere between 6 and 48 hours (24 is a nice round number), and some kind of tracking system for the number of bans received and from which moderator. If the powers that be see fit, they can set a ban limit or progressively lengthen the bans. To prevent cirumvention of this, newly registered users will be given instructions that they should just read for a day to get a general feel for the site, and they will have posting privledges enabled in x hours (I suggest either 12 or 24). Moderators are not infallible any more than the pope is, but I feel that the degree to which they are being empowered will not be too corruptive, especially when oversight exists and when the chosen few are selected based on trustworthiness. There will always be moderators "abusing" whatever powers they have, but I do not forsee this being much more of a problem than it is now. I believe neither that this is a perfect solution, nor that any such thing exists. I do, however, forsee it being relatively easy to implement, effective at doing what it's supposed to (increase signal to noise ratio), and be as impartial as possible. If nothing else, (if you haven't already) make a hidden forum where moderators can mention spamming/flooding.
