I've removed them on a temporary to permanent basis, in the hopes of taming the rampant "MY POST COUNT IS 4000 and I've only been here a WEEK!" sort of users we've had a lot of lately. Along with that, I'm forced to remove registered date and location, limitations of the software we use.

You can still view all of a user's info by clicking the profile button above each of their posts.

^^ 1495 posts

sorry but I think that this kinda sucks, im not saying its like bad but it just seems to be so empty next to the name. In my opinion I think that the post count and location and all that should be brought back, some of the locations people put where clever. because some people decided to make dumbass threads like that doesnt mean you should get rid of all of the peoples post counts or locations.

oh well this was my futile attempt to bring back our post counts.

I have to say its about dam time... I wish the date you registered was still posted, but the post count was stupid to begin with. I don't care if you have a post count of 5k if all of them were crap. Agian Thank you

Post counts were removed to stop st00pid threads about post counts. Ironically this will probably generate 10^23 more st00pid threads in spurious/b&m about the post count being removed.

I guess it will take away a lot of the n00b bashing when people who have just signed up post, just because they have a low post count. it does seem awfully empty over there though -maybe something elseshould go there?

I advise you give back the location and registered date.

When a man grows old, he has certain features about him that people can remember from when he was a child. Over the internet we see no faces, no wrinkles or scars.

What I'm getting to is that it will be harder to recognise someone. Our hair, tatoos, and faces have been hidden.

So you're telling us that you won't ban idiots because we should be the ones to disregard their statements on our own, but you're taking away our post counts in an effort to make us ignore the number of times they've posted here, which can be a good judge of character? Obviously you'll know when you're reading shit. And if you're reading shit created by someone with 10,000 posts, you know that they're a spammer. Shit by someone with only 5 posts, a noob or a troll.

Is this not seriously hypocritical?

I'm well aware no one is stopping me from checking the profile pages, but I don't think anyone is really going to bother. That's like having to read everyones post in two steps, and it's tiring. I really like this site, and I've learned a lot from it, and (contrary to what some would believe) have brought my share of knowledge here. And I don't like this new change.

Just adding my two cents to this trial.

I think it's a great idea; now people won't spam like crazy to get a few more posts (yes I know the count is still visible in the profile), newbies won't immediately be marked as n00bs for having very few posts, and people like Gus and mizled won't have people hating them off the bat for their post count.

Of course you'll know if you're reading shit, but you won't judge someone with a high post count and one shitty post a spammer from reading that one awful post, and the same goes for newbs. One crap post and you would otherwise brand them n00b or troll, this way you might wait until you've read their other posts until you hate them.

Overall, I think this is a great move

Well actually it's a problematic cycle. The older users would make fun of new ones based on the low post count, causing them to binge, and then they get made fun of for high post counts. Interesting. Oh well, I think it is too blank, even if a good idea. Maybe hand us some avatars at the least admins. How bout we give that a shot since we are trying these sorts of things?

I didn't know the post count situation was such a big deal--big enough to warrant removing all the info to the left of the post. I often enjoyed seeing the info, though I didn't use it to make judgements.

Seems those who need to annoy on this board will find a way to continue to do so in ways other than harping on post counts. This just seems like one of those drastic measures that everyone "suffers for" due to the actions of a few.

Meh. I don't have the admin perspective, so I'll defer to y'alls judgement.

Yeah, I think avatars would be nice, it would give a "face" to people. They could just say have to be on your own server, so it wouldn't cost them any money, and I'd say make them no bigger than AIM buddy icons.

I know it's been said before, and they said there was a reason why they didn't have them, so I really doubt it'll happen.

I think thats a dumb idea, I don't need to come on the internet to get my self-esteem boosted by bullshit ratings.

I don't really like this change because I like to be able to see a bit of information about the poster next to their message, it is useful and fun. And there are always going to be bullshit posts about one thing or another, but who cares? They're not cutting into your profits or pissing on your front lawn. I don't think it would be a bad idea to upgrade the bbs software so that we could get some of the user info back next to the posts (except for postcount so uptight people can be happy). Also there are other benifits to newer bbs software such as PMs (private messages, similar to e-mails but they are within the bbs). As for avatars and signatures they are ok on other boards but I like totse better the way it is without them.

Kind of like a user rating system? Like the karma system over at www.overgrow.com (http://www.overgrow.com)

They don't have too many 'up to post count' thread's. Instead they have "give me +k and I will give you +k". If that's what your getting at, we will still have the same problem's.

PHTom1 you better hope Halifax doesn't find out you were on here!!

Anyway, if we had avatars then loading times wouldn't be up that much. In a day, if you read say 5 of the forums, you'll see 50 posts? How many will be from the same people? You will probably have to load about 3 avatars a day. It would be slow the first time but your computer would store it under temporary internet files, and loading the few that weren't stored on your cpu would only take a few seconds if you had broadband, and not much longer than loading a new ad or a thumbnail to a pic.

As I said, the software is limited. It's not my choice what gets updated or not, Jeff is the only one that decides that. We will NOT have avatars or images however, regardless of anything else. They serve no purpose, they're a pain in the butt (constant "CAN I HAVE THIS AVATAR" etc topics) and they DO slow down connection speed and increase bandwidth usage. Personally, I read enough pages to see posts from upwards of a couple of hundred users every day.. Even on broadband, that's gonna take quite some time.

Hmmm, why not get rid of post counts completly? Like others have pointed out you will probably stil get some "I have x posts" posts, so why not take them out of the profiles too? They serve no purpose really, just some random stat. Maybe the software won't allow them to be removed, or maybe they serve some purpose unknown to me.

get the hell over it. no you can't have you're damn avatars. no they can't bring back your location and date registered because of software limitations. no they won't change it because you think you're special and that if you personally ask somethign will happen, it won't. really you're not. if you want somethign to happen, code up some new bbs software and give it to enigma or someone. shut up. quit bitching. and go post and iof the only way you can get attention is by your post count and location then you don't deserve membership on any bb.

I still like the idea to get rid of ALL information, that would be just funny as hell...

"^You're a fag"

"No I'm not!"

"I was talking to him, dipshit!"

"Hey, I am him!"

"No you're not, you are you!"

Or maybe just have post counts, and no names, let us see the system "work" like that, hehehe.

Nice idea, But it removes some of our freedoms. I say they can be considered freedoms in a way they were given to us freely by the software, now they have been taken away for safety against spam.

As for individuality, what's so hard about being an individual through your posts? Signatures are generally just quotes from other people.. what's so original about saying something someone else has said first?.. or what's so individual about that?

People that disregard a post by someone with a low post count just because they are a "n00b" are stupid. Judgements should be based on the quality of a post, not the number of posts that a person has. Someone who has never posted on this forum before can have something just as intelligent to say as any "veteran totse member." Personally it doesn't bother me that post counts aren't so readily displayed anymore. Lets evaluate a person by how good/bad their posts are, and not by how many times they have clicked a submit button.

I also think that Signatures would be good.

It's all well and good to say be individual by your posts but who here can honestly say they remember more than half a dozen posters names here?

Signatures/Locations allow each of your posts to be personal and allow that bit more personalisation that helps distinguish people.

Just my 2 cents...

Getting rid of the post count.. in a metaphorical way, it's like going out with a really fat guy.

You get relaxed, and stop weighing. YOu ignore the nagging thought at the back of your head that says 'slow down a little..' .

And then one day, the guy dumps you, and you go to the scales..

And that day when you go to weigh is like the day the post counts come back.

In both situations, the response would be something like:

''AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! NO! NO NO NO NO!!''.

I personally feel we should have the post count back. But that is just me. I think when you take away the post count, you are taking away the amount of time a person has spent here at totse. It's like when a marathon runner runs 1344 miles in a month, he gets to have that record for everyone to see if they wish. When it is taken away, its like "You mean I ran all those miles and now, nobody can see the effort I put into it?"

I think that is an interesting standpoint. How bout' you?

I do not really see the point of taking away post counts, sure there was a lot of useless threads about it, but not as many as alot of people try to imply. They weren't hurting anything. The bottom line is some one with 200+ post counts is a more avid member than someone with 5 or 6, it's the cold sad truth, and from what I've seen most people with only few posts only post just that, a few times. I always liked the info on the side, even if you leave out post counts at least put the location, it helped kind of show the posters personality a little bit, but at least put something....

You can still view all of a user's info by clicking the profile button above each of their posts.

I think that not only should post counts stay removed, but 'regular' and 'moderator' or 'administrator' be removed as well. Mods and admins don't need it to be widely known for them to do their jobs, and it would promote the idea that quality of posts determines social status here, not post counts or the ability to move threads around.

Simple conflict here.

In general the post counts / Date-registered are desired by those with higher post counts, and especially by those with older registration dates. This signifies them as veterans of the forum, and in itself has a valuable merit. Those with lower counts and newer registration dates will be more alligned to have these features removed, out of fear of bias judgement and inferiority. The 'from' detail is however neutral, and many people had interesting notes, that added to their identity. As for leaving out the date registers and/or post count, it really will really doesn't matter too much, and would create equality to all of the users, just eliminating the status quo of the veterans. I highly doubt the administrators would go as far as to remove their status positions, but that would be very respectable.

I thought about removing the admin and moderator designations, but the simple fact is, all we'd end up with is more people not knowing who to ask about certain things and more bullshit topics all the time saying things like "who owns this place" etc... In certain cases, it's necessary for my opinion or zoks, for example, to have more weight, like when answering questions about totse itself, whether it's rules or whatever. Same thing in various forums, sometimes it's necessary for a moderators opinion to carry more weight, because generally they're expected to know the answers to many questions in their forums.. It's better to have a moderator for say, backyard ballistics, be recognised as such when they post, in the hope that they are less likely to advise someone into a situation that's negative or illinformed..

I know some might take this as me not wanting to remove the 'status' of moderators and admins because I *am* promoting elitism, but it's more a convenience than anything else, we need a little distinction in order to make it clear *where* users need to turn for help and assistance..

is it at all possible to retain "moderator" and "administrator", and lose the "regular" and "member" part? or does it all go together like the location and the post count?

i am kind of torn in this topic. i can understand why wintermute's and zok's opinions need to have more weight in forums than others, but that also has nothing to do with seniority. it doesnt matter how long they have been on totse because they are mods. at the same time, we need a way to easily recognize what their position is.

Ok I know there was problems with post counting, But now time wasters are coming on, asking questions that have allready been answered a hundred times.

These questions are being answered now because people don't know their 'age' and can't see that its a noob who's only been here for a few days.

On the other hand people who have a legit question don't get answered 'cause people are to busy answering answered questions.

Therefore I propose a post count to, say 50, then a simple grading by the administrators.
