The Constitutional Rye Convention
was held July 1st, 1874 in Omaha,
Nebraska. It consisted of the gov-
ernor + legislature + forty-five or
fifty (the records aren't precise) rye-
raisers from all over the state. They
were tired of wheat + corns' attempts
at making a new constitution. They
said the new one was supposed to be
developed around the rye seed. No
more talk about "ears" of corn.
The pure seed. The pure seed-teeth
of the bushel constitution. Wilson
Oot, from Rhumbach, said he wanted
people to understand how much rye
reflected the state's values: cold-
hardy, productive under the worst
possible conditions, a bit sour, hard
to get along with, but always there.
They said they'd put that in. They
liked that. It sounded good.
