Cursing in Swedish, Lesson 2

The Devil - fan

Cursing in Swedish - Lesson Two

The word fan, i.e. "devil", is most often used in the same way as
j?vel and j?vlar, but only in the singular form:

Fan (or J?vlar) vad ont det gjorde! (18)
It hurt like hell!
Fan (or J?vlar), jag skar mig! (19)
Damn it, I cut myself!
Han var en fet fan (or j?vel) (20)
He was a fat bastard

When it is used about persons it can sometimes have a mainly
condescending nuance, e.g. Svensson ?r en stackars fan =
"Svensson is a poor sod".

There are some usages of fan in which it is not readily substituted
by j?vel or j?vlar, e.g.:

Ta mig fan! (21)
Damn it! (Literally: May the devil take me)
Se p? fan! (22)
Bloody hell! (Literally: Look at the devil!)
Det var som fan (23)
Bloody hell! (Literally: It was like the devil!)

A special expression is fan anamma:

Visa lite fan anamma!
Go for it! (Literally: Show some devil-take-it)
