IN THE PUBLIC'S EYE
Public image is the key to success in almost every business ?

or activity. If the general public thinks poorly of your business ?

or activity, then you will have trouble surviving. The sport of ?

paintball is one activity that have been battling a poor public ?
?
image since its origins. Paintball is a sport that is usually ?
?
played along the same rules as the old boy scout game capture the ?
?
flag, except that the participants carry air rifles that project ?
?
small paint-filled gelatin capsules or paintballs. The ?
?
paintballs are used to mark the opponent, which elliminates them ?
?
from play. The poor public image of the sport of paintball is ?
?
generally due to the public's ignorance and prejudgement of the ?
?
game, which holds very little, if any, truthfulness.
"The public image that paintball players must fight against ?
?
is that we are survivalists, warmongers, white supremists, or ?
?
hicks with guns" (Bliss 44). To the players these ideas are ?
?
utterly rediculous, but to a large portion of the general public ?
?
thinks of these things as fact. These thought are true to a ?
?
point, but along this line of thinking, any activity could be put ?
?
under those headings. There are most defenitely some ?
?
survivalists, warmongers, and white supremists that play ?
?
paintball, but there are sure to be just as many that are in ?
?
baseball or any other such activity. There is going to be a ?
?
blend of morals, ideals, and lifestyles in whatever you do, but ?
??labeling the whole as such is plain wrong. The general public ?
?
tends to believe anything that the media reports, whether it be ?
?
true or not. More times than not when a publication covers the ?
?
sport of paintball, they use the label war-games. This is a ?
?
gross error on their part and sloppy journalism to say the least. ?
?
There are no similarities between this game and war, except that ?
?
camouflage is worn by the players and that camouflaged persons ?
?
are usually linked to or thought of as military personal. Bow ?
?
hunters wear the exact same dress as paintball players, but I ?
?
have yet to see hunting labeled as war-games.
Television has not helped paintball's image very much ?
?
either. In an episode the series Wiseguy, an issue of Action ?
?
Pursuit Games Magazine, a monthly publication totally dedicated ?
?
to the sport of paintball, was shown lying on the dresser in the ?
?
room of the leader of a neo-nazi, white supremists group. This ?
?
automatically links the two together in some people's minds. Not ?
?
too many people want to be linked with such a publication. Even ?
?
though the publication has nothing what-so-ever to do with white ?
?
supremecy, most people not look past this to actually find out ?
?
about the publication or the game.
"Another misconception by the public is that in the game of ?
?
paintball is violent and that participants shoot their opponents" ?
?
(Marr 58). The word shoot alludes to the fact that the person ?
?
who was shot had actual damage or injury caused to them, which is ?
?
false when speaking of paintball. In this context, the word ?
?
shoot alludes to the use of firearms. Paintball air-guns do not ?
?
under law or general defenition fall under the classification of ?
?
firearms.
?
People have joined up in arms in some areas to try to stop ?
?
the playing of paintball, just like they would to stop activities ?
?
of the Klu Klux Klan. It is all out of ignorance. There are no ?
?
political or religious qualifications or binds in the sport of ?
?
paintball. "One paintball field owner in Canada was in court for ?
?
over two years trying to keep his business open against those who ?
?
thought that the field and playing of the game would promote ?
?
actual firearm sales and condone acts of violence in the ?
?
community" (Russell 9).
Players and field owners around the world have diligently ?
?
and constantly been trying to promote a better image for the ?
?
sport. All over the United States paintball playing fields have ?
?
been holding events where all the procedes from that day go to a ?
?
charity fund or organization. Participants want the public to ?
?
realize that paintball players are just as much decent and caring ?
?
individuals as the next guy.
All of the fallacies and misconceptions about the sport of ?
?
paintball stem from the public's ignorance about it. ?
?
Participants certainly do not expect individuals to run out and ?
?
become involved in the sport, even though they certainly ?
?
encourage it. All that they ask is that the public takes the time ?
?
to look at the sport before passing judgement or that they ?
?
realize that they do not know anything about the sport and should ?
?
not jump to the conclusions emitted by the just as ignorant ?
?
press.
