Default A great exercise for building self-confidence/social skills

I know a lot of you need help with these and here's something I stumbled across recently. Basically, you have to go out to a busy area somewhere full of people you will never see again with nothing on you but a way to get home (and possibly your phone) and complete the following tasks by doing nothing but talking to people and without using any "i've been dared to do this" excuses. There are also a few which require more than one person. Anyway, you have to:

- Go up to a complete stranger and find out their name and 2 other pieces of information about them.
- Go up to a complete stranger and talk to them for at least a minute.
- Go up to someone sitting down and convince them to stand up.
- Go to a fast-food place and get a free sample of some sort of food.
- Go into a cafe and get a free coffee.
- Go into a bar and find out 4 things about a person there.
- Find someone walking down the street and convince them to walk the other way.
- Go into a shop and get something small (chewing gum/rolling papers etc.) for free.

Exercises for 2 people:

-Go into a restaurant and convince everyone there to stand up and sing "happy birthday" to your friend.
- Get one person to wait somewhere by a phone while another goes into a cafe/bar/restaurant/shop with nothing on him apart from a piece of paper with a phone number written on it (absolutely no money/phone) and somehow convince someone to provide a way to call the other person.

Also, two people can do the one person thigns if you want. Another rule is that you can try and fail, but under absolutely no circumstances can you not try something. If you leave something out the whole exercise is moot.

So good luck!

Oh, just a tip, don't ask anyone for something straight away. Introduce yourself and try and build a rapport first.

Interesting, but I think some of those are a little odd and have ways of effecting others in possibly negative ways.

I think a better thing to do is make up a list of topics you can talk about in certain or any situation, and also opening lines.

Don't follow a set of rules.

The best way to become more social/outgoing is to hang out with different groups of people and discuss various topics.

Also, get a job a sales job in retail. That will force you to be charismastic with complete strangers, as well as learn how to improvise.

That's the idea - it helps you deal with akward social situations with confidence and ease.

Couldn't agree more. I've been working retail as a casual for the last 1.5 years, and its improved my conversation skills greatly.
