It started with the big bang and will end in a crunch as another parrallel universe will expand into into it. Ours is currently expanding and causing other universes to crunch.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
thats assuming there are other universes. and who said that they will even collide in time if another exists? our universe might not have even reached escape velocity meaning that it would stop expanding and implode on itself. if it did reach escape velocity then atoms will continue to expand so far that they will lose their bonds and matter will not be able to hold together any further. either way we're fucked

Re: How the universe started/will finish
I think there is a possability that there will be a time where the black holes have devoured all the matter in the universe and after long enough they all will merge so quickly and produce so much heat it will create a massive explosion and will break free of the black holes gravity field and create a new big bang. I dont really have any thing to base this idea on but it was just a thought i had a while ago and I thought it was prety interesting.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
It began with the Big Bang (should that be capitalized?) It will never end, but the forces of entropy will, I don't know, do something, and the protons will fizzle out, and it will be one big empty vastness. It will take a really long time for this to happen. Dozens of years.
1'000'000'000'000's of dozens maybe

Same basic theory for me. I figure black holes will swallow everything evetually, then the universe will begin to shirnk, leaving a small point, a singularity in the center, which then...

good theory. but once everything is sucked in the black hole, then what is exactly "outside" of space, or ONCE everythin is sucked up what would be outside of the massive black hole?

Re: How the universe started/will finish
quote: Is our universe about to be mangled?
* 17:43 23 February 2006 * NewScientist.com news service * Maggie McKee
Our universe may one day be obliterated or assimilated by a larger universe, according to a controversial new analysis. The work suggests the parallel universes proposed by some quantum theorists may not actually be parallel but could interact and with disastrous consequences.
Random quantum fluctuations mean the behaviour of particles and photons of light cannot be predicted exactly. The quantum equations that describe them contain a variety of different - and opposing - outcomes in their solution, such as a particular particle causing a bell to both ring and not ring in an experimental setup. Physicists then have to use an equation called the Born rule to calculate the probability of the bell ringing, and countless experiments have shown the rule works.
But researchers have long struggled to understand why a bell will ring or not ring in any given run of an experiment, since in theory it has the option of doing both. This conundrum, known as the quantum measurement problem, has led a small subset of physicists to argue that in fact the bell does do both - but that each possible outcome takes place in a different, parallel universe that pops into existence during the experiment.
"This is what the math suggests if you take it literally," says Robin Hanson of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, US. But the idea that "every microsecond, the universe splits into a bunch more universes boggles the mind." Destructive interaction .....
It continues. http://tinyurl.com/pmwd4 [This message has been edited by Real.PUA (edited 02-24-2006).]

Depends, the dynamics of the universe are very finely determined by certain physical properties and parameters: intrinsic curvature, homogeneity, cosmological constant etc.

What if there are other types of matter that we can not detect and are not effected by the lack hole and the laws of the universe we know.Maby as the universe was getting sucked into the black hole the other matter just filled in the space.

yea but that would be interesting to know if there was matter outside of space. But that theory of the black hole sucking everything in it means that the rate of suction that the black hole does has to be greater than the rate of which space expands, and if thats not the case, and space doesnt expand, then space isnt infinite

You assume that there CAN be a beginning and end. This ain't a novel, it's physics. Matter and energy cannot be destroyed; only transformed.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
^energy cannot be destroyed or CREATED=thermodynamics. since when do you know that the laws of thermodynamics hold up when time, and thus cause and affect, have no bearing on the universe..e.g at the beginning and maybe at the end...Where did the universe come from if energy cannot be created? In my views the end could be as entropic as how it began, the uncertainty is unfathomable. I could cause the end by writing this post, although highly unlikely it may cause some butterfly effect that destroy's us by a... yes... giant butterfly. the last part was for kicks.. When you say that the universe has to have been created, you are implying that something must have came from nothing. Does that really make more sense than the universe always existing? People feel like there doesn't have to be a reason for there being nothing, but if something exists that must have a reason. Perhaps nothing is actually impossibe.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
The idea of parallel universes is just stupidity on mans part believing that the our universe is so grand that it's the only one but their are others like it. If their are other universes they're most likely in the same space as our universe. The idea of another universe expanding into ours and making the big crunch is a new one to me and makes sence. The way I see it is the large scale stuff (solarsystems, galaxies, universes) are pretty much the same as the small stuff (atoms and junk , maybe molecules but I can't think of one example of comparison)
The Black hole Domination theory is semi-good but Stephen Hawking proved that sometimes every million or billion years (I can't remember) an atom from inside the Black Hole will appear just outside the Black Holes suction distance (I think that's called horizon point). So a Black Hole might exhaust it's supplie but the universe hasn't existed long enough to be sure.
Their is matter we can't detect called dark matter. If we ever achieve faster then light travel it'll involve that but no one can prove it exists. Just theory.
And it's impossible for something to come from nothing yet here we are. and it's impossible for space to be forever yet it's also impossible to stop because what would be beyond it? A good answer to that question is in the book series Ender's Game

the last part I agree with, prehaps..but the cosmic background microwave radiation (CME) proves that there indeed was a beginning. wikipedia it for more detail...I'm goin to do some homework..yay! oh dark matter/energy has been detected http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/missing_matter_030212.html [This message has been edited by delusional_reality (edited 03-01-2006).]

Re: How the universe started/will finish
So far there has been alot posted about the apocolypic end of the universe. But Ive spent a good portion of my 19 year old life thinking about the earlier beginning part. Alot has been said that black holes will be the death of a univrse, but i think a universe can also be the creator of one aswell. After a decent sized sun goes super nova and colapses into a high mass singularity (a black hole, duh.), then goes off in some random tangent, has its way with all the matter in that general direction, what does it do then? if its beyond the reaches of the universe, it has nothing to do but spiral farther and farther away from any matter. Well i believe that after a couple of millenia of billions upon billion to the billionth degree of atoms being compacted together easily beyond the point of fusion millions of times per second, enough energy should have accumulated to rip the black hole apart from the inside out. (unfathomably far away from our universe), possibly releasing enough energy for say, i dunno, a big bang?
Though it doesnt explian how the universe that spawned the next universe got there in the first place, so we're back to stage one.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
The universe is a place of everything, every gas, liquid, solid, w.e
If the universe is solid, then they're are multiple universe,(the big bang could look like a bubble in the universe, where we are) if the universe is a gas, its only 1 universe, and its not liquid because i said so.
Universe will not finish, the sun will burn out and we will all move to another galaxy, and get killed by the aliens or miraculously win the war thanks to my great grandsonx941337.
I believe some idiot will destroy the whole world one day before the sun burns out though.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
In the beginning, we were a dot of all the matter in the universe. For some reason, this dot exploded.
Then the little particles of stuff (quasars) formed atoms, which formed dust. All this is happening while the universe is moving away from the dot that once was.
Now two possible things can happen. The universe will die out and gravity is far too insignificant to pull all the matter back together and everything will be dead... or.
There will be a point when the universes stop moving outward, and turn back inward. When this happens, we will all get crushed into a little dot. Then this little dot will explode.. you get the point.
So Moral of the story is... You have many lives to live, but only one path to follow. Any mistakes you make will be echoed forever! Hmm sounds like religion. oh well..

Re: How the universe started/will finish
The universe experiences fluxuations in the fundamental states of energetic manifestation (time, space, matter) and periodically endures cycles of singularity and expansion. What I find more exciting than the creation of material universes is the idea that they may all be, at some point, overlapping...
Also, can thought be considered a form of energy? Assuming that it can, and that our universe splits at every given moment of causation, is there not then a basic element of being which keeps us from entering the wrong dimension, or does the body enter a new universe based on the laws of greatest probability? Then, what is this habitat in which we reside between universal shifts? Can this be deemed a "dimension"? Can what dictates the state of being between universal shifts be "the soul", or does each universe have a similar set of natural laws that are shaped by time, therefore allowing the physical form to retain a constant shape? ...Quantum physics raises alot of questions.
Assuming my initial assumptions :P...
Is consciousness constantly creating new dimensions at the rate of universal creation? If the two are truly intertwined (universes seperating and dividing like cells at any given point of causation), then what could potentially happen if consciousness experiences a sudden "jump" in proficiency, ie: speeds up? Would the rate of universal-creation speed up to meet that quota? Would not thought then, and perhaps even consensus, be the basis of reality as we know it, if not a factor in shaping it, not just through physical means, but by pure cognition as well?

The black hole domination theory is refuted by the virtual particle theory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_particle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_holes
Although I'm not sure how it began (if it did) or how it will end (if it will) but black holes WILL NOT be the cause.

I think descartes said it best with ''ego cogito ergo sum'' anyway yes there is ongoing research into how black holes may not even exist as we believe them to be although they will still retain the event horizon..it's apparently got to do with dark energy and how we may indeed live in a giant ''dark star'' also (as they are now callin black holes this again) hmm if i could just find the link

I think you are the amadhan my friend!. What baddog was saying is perfectly plausible as this is a metaphysical argument!. you dumb ass. I think I will remind you that methaphysics emcompass's the theoretical as well. For some proof look up the ''observer effect'' which is a phenomenon associated with quantum mechanics as you can see if your lookin it up..without a consciousness the universe does not exist. I think he is thinking of how even stars like our own which will end up as a white dwarf in the distant future..will eventually encounter another white dwarf which will form a black hole after another distant future. I think think he is not using the argument that the universe is speeding up and stretching, I think he is using the argument that it will become static or something.

1. Not all stars turn into black holes 2. black holes eventually evaporate 3. black holes do not destroy the light they suck in, light is energy and it cannot be destroyed which means it comes out somewhere in the universe. Plus theres a thing called an event zone the black hole cannot suck in anything beyond it. Even if all stars did turn into black holes, try comparing the size of the infinite space to the distance between each event zone of all the black holes in the universe. So go back to your paranoid delusions bullshit forum where you belong and stay out of the smart forums. Nobody likes you. Not even if there was an omnibenevolent god.

Re: How the universe started/will finish
This really depends on your perception of the universe and the exact level of organization on which you base the question. For instance whenever matter undergoes an exergonic (releasing) reaction, a certain portion of the free (usable) energy is released as another form of energy incapable of doing work. This level of "useless energy is known as entropy. An notion of continuity would suggest that all energy would eventually become entropic, thus ending all movement/change in the universe.
This, however does not seem logical, for how can anything be truly terminal. There always has been so how can it really end. Mind-boggling
