Starting a Business Painting Acoustic Guitars
My friend and I are trying to start a business painting acoustic guitars and selling them. We plan on buying decent guitars and then sanding them down and painting them and then putting some kind of sealer on and finishing it off with some nice tuning machines. Does anyone think this is a good idea? Do you think theres a market for our style? How much should we be selling them for? Any comments or advice would be awesome. The first picture is of our first guitar so far which is far from being done, it still needs lots of work, the second pic is of it sanded down, and the third pic is before I sanded it with a little drawing on it. Keep in mind that the guitar is far from being done, there is still going to be a lot of work put into it. Also that the entire guitar will be painted, the front, back, sides, neck and headstock will all be done in a similar style. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/pantsinants/g.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/pantsinants/129_2916.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i265/pantsinants/129_2910.jpg

That looks pretty cool, you should see if you can market these on eBay.

Guitars are very precise instruments. If you know nothing about setting them up you're going to fail, because a guitar that looks good but sounds like shit is about as useful as tits on a bull.

Well then, all the more power to you then. I play guitar as well and if the intonation is off it always sounds like shit. What kind of markup are you planning on? 10%, 20%?. Oh and a bit of advice, look through want ads, and listen to want ads on the radio. Lots of times people will get rid of a really nice guitar that is worth a lot more than they want for it. I've even seen good deals on those 3x5 want ad cards posted in corridors of supermarkets and what not.

Re: Starting a Business Painting Acoustic Guitars
I already know what guitars i will be buying to start with. Eventually i would like to get hooked up with a luthier who would give me unfinished guitars to paint. I actually know of one who is looking for someone to work with it's just a matter of proving ourselves to him. We're thinking that between the two of us we could produce 2 guitars a week and we'd like to try and make a minimun of 500 on each guitar so we're hoping to sell them for about 1000 - 1500. I guess we'll see how it goes. We're going to be very strick about quality, everything will be top of the line and they will be very nice guitars. That one that i posted pictures of is actually my guitar that we're using as a practice one, already we've learned a lot of do's and don'ts.
