San Berdoo? Did somebody say San Berdoo? Anyway i sat cross-legged in a Tower Book store for a couple or more nights, reading The Bell Curve. i was also totally amazed when it's critics on some now defunct message boards routinely and religiously described TBC as totally racist propaganda. Quite the opposite if you as me . But at any rate i certainly don't buy the concept of intelligence testing hook line and sinker, and i also sheepishly protest the racist overtones of the conclusions, even if the typical sloganeering reactions are totally superfluous and opaque.

I disagree, this book is about intelligence, not race. More than socioeconomic background, parents' marital status or anything else, intelligence correlates with education, income, employment, criminal behavior, disability, likelihood of being in automobile accidents, and just about everything else. If you are a mathphobic, you won't like this book. Nor is it touchy feely.

I'm really into Southern California's history, defintely not it's future. Charles Rich's father was a veteran of the American Revolution. And C. Rich was one of the founders of Mormon San Bernadino. It's a really dry read, more of a library book if anything. Ironic that Salt Lake evetually came to disown their California brethren, but you will have to read to find out..

Re: Books with oomph!
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is really good. Very unique and thought invoking. it's about this guy that talks to a gorilla about origins of culture, human evolution, overpopulation, and how to save the word. The gorilla takes the role of an instructor. it's a good book you can read in a couple of days easily.

i'm not a mathophobic in any sense of the word however i am decidedly unimpressed by the cutsie math that garnishes almost every other page. The book is not about race, eh? It would appear that that is not the case because if you really believe that then you would have to eliminate the implied socio-economic strata predictors and the Orwellian nature of the SAT score propaganda, that is as it applies to future success, and those that are implicity implied by the concepts that actually drive intelligence testing models, whatever they may happen to be. Intelligence is not and should never be a predictor of financial success in the real world, as this could never accurately account for unforseen hardships as well as lack of motivation and nonexistent business acumen. It is not realistic and in fact is a blatant social ill, one that needs to be rectified. So in a sense you have surrounded the issue of race and/or race relations with such boorish half-baked sorry classist drivel as you have here, that impresses nobody in the real world who doesn't actually let the mass media do their critical thinking for them. This is truly the disease that plagues all people at every turn and it's name is the poorly correlated SES criminal statistical data bandied about in the media, using results than cannot be verified in the real world of give and take. But then again i have only read some but not all of the book, but even so i don't "buy" the warhorse Ivory Tower fairly tale assumption that you can write an obnoxious number on a piece of paper and that this magic and godsent number supposedly can tell you in no uncertain terms what kind of morals and what kind of person said individual actually posseses in the real world. The key word here is comedy. It supposedly then becomes the ultimate measure of success and thusly is wrongly contrived to be infallible. However it is not the pure science that it is indeed protrayed as, in fact you have just crossed the limits into unabashed and unforgiving Junk Science IMHO. It seems to deny human spirit to it's very core, and that attitude has immoral dull minded lackey written all over it. [This message has been edited by neon (edited 11-27-2001).]

Re: Books with oomph!
Anthony Burgess' Clockwork Orange (the European version with Chapter 21) had a very unique coming-of-age theme. Despite the language change, and maybe because of it, it was extremely graphic. (Unfortunately and fortunately at the same time: it may have been difficult for some to read)
Howard Zinn's People's History of the US was good, but it really did require the accompanyment of a good history book. (Brinkley's abridged Survey would be optimum)
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time was very good, very original fantasy as was Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber.
Stephen King's Midnight Dreams (title??? Book with a Sun and Moon on the cover) and Skeleton Crew were short story compilations that left me sitting and thinking.
Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently books were good, but not nearly as insightful as the Hitchhiker's Guide.
Certain books of the Bible.
among others...
