Who logicly belives that tim can be stopped at the speed of light...
it would always take a certain amount of time to get somewhere... time is for everything speed does not eleminate time

Time doesnt stop at the speed of light... It just goes slow for you, and to everyone else it looks as if you are going super fast.

The only thing I know of that surpasses the speed of light (and has a good deal of scientific backing) is entanglement.

If you could somehow look at the people inside a spaceship travelling at the speed of light they would appear to be statues.

Prove me wrong.

Time and speed converge at the speed of light.
As you accelerate, time for you slows down. To a person travelling at the speed of light, things would go on normally inside his ship, but the universe would appear to be aging infinitely quickly. Empires and civilizations on Earth would rise and fall in the blink of an eye.
Light has no inertia, but humans do, so its damn hard to go that fast.

I don't even see how you could be right about one thing and then contradict yourself. The faster you go the slower time moves. That is true. At the speed of light, time wouldn't stop though because then you'd be able to get anywhere without a moment passing (meaning light would have infinite speed which it doesn't).

Your second statement:
quote:
To a person travelling at the speed of light, things would go on normally inside his ship, but the universe would appear to be aging infinitely quickly. Empires and civilizations on Earth would rise and fall in the blink of an eye.

Contradicts your first:
quote:
As you accelerate, time for you slows down.

If time is slowing down, why do you say everything ages quicker?

"objectively", time speeds up for everything else, and for you it slows down. From your perception, time would get faster outside, but inside the ship, the minutes would pass much more slowly-relative to the outside of the ship. The clock inside wouldn't move; the one outside the ship would go zingzing. That's all I meant.
And theoretically (Einstein), if you made a light speed journey of a hundred light years, it would from your perspective be instantaneous, since time would stop for you altogether. I don't really believe that though.

Why would time speed up for everething else if your traveling at the speed of light. As i remind u light travels really fast. Imagine it took 2 seconds to circle the earth at the speed of light. while that circle is done... how much time will pass on earth?

if u say anything else then 2 seconds u better have a good explenation

Man I am getting so sick of these half-assed topics, posted by people who don't want to read a book or research it themselves, and replied to by people who think they know it all.

A lot of you seem to be forgetting one of Einstein's most important teachings. Time is reletive, it is not absolute. It exists for every single point in space, seperatly, but reletive to other points. It can be warped by gravity just as space can. It is not the same for every single place in the universe, it exists seperately for every place under the effect of gravity. I hope that I am hammering this point across nice and sparkling clean.

Newton made this mistake, then Einstien corrected him. So what you really find is when gravity is induced by mass, space-time gets warped and time gets slown down for you, whereas for the rest of us it continues as normal. So even if you were floating around in space, and a 5 metre long rock came flying by you, you would be slightly attracted to it because of gravity, time will slow down for you by a few nano-seconds, and light will bend slightly around it, all because space-time gets warped.

Gravity increases when mass increases, and one of the ways in which mass can do that is by accelerating. The faster it goes the more energy it needs to keep doing so, and the more gravity it induces. It will not, however accelerate to the speed of light, as doing so will require infinite energy and will probably induce infinity gravity, and thus if a spaceship somehow was travelling at the speed of light, you wouldn't be able to see inside it, as light wouldn't be able to escape from it, and it would collapse into itself and become a black hole. But if it didn't then time on it will either come to a complete stop, and to outside observers it will look like it is at a complete stop, and the people will look like statues. To the crew, time will be progressing normal relative to them inside the spaceship, but they will see time progressing outside infinitly fast, and the end of time will be over instantly, before they have the chance to go anywhere, therefore they will not travel anywhere.

But of course, that wouldn't happen, as nothing can travel faster then the speed of light through a conventional means

Why would you say anything and purposely not sound like you know what you're talking about? And it should be said that this is all theory, and that no one knows anything.

quote:

I disagree, only because black holes are thought to have a singularity which has infinite mass yet black holes don't have infinite gravity.

quote:

Why why why does travelling fast disable you from getting anywhere? Explain why travelling at the speed of light for four minutes brings you to the "end" of time rather than halfway between the earth and the sun. If you are allowing an object with mass to travel the speed of light you mine as well just ignore the mass. Why wouldn't this spaceship behave like a photon?

The people inside the ship wouldn't see time progressing extremely quickly, rather the opposite. Outside, everything would look like a statue because the ship is moving so quickly as to have moved past everything before it could move.

And why does time have an end?

Do you believe in time? What do you think time is? I don't believe time could ever be stopped. You can't stop something that's not there.

Time is in a simplistic sense a new formula for attempting to explain the existence of the seemingly odd arrangement of infinitesmal occurences between illusory images of objective subatomic matter, which are far beyond the fantastical conception of you or I anyway,(so why worry about it).

Time is a way to count progressive actions.
Time is inside your head, when a minute passes u know it passes, even if youd go 3 times the speed of ligth.
Explain to me why time should slow up or donw depeending on ur speed.
I didnt mention anyone outside the space ship. Damn who would wait outside in space for ur ship to fly by and try and see if u llok like a fucking statue. If your in the ship u migth not see very mcuh because by the time an image of ur vision gets to ur head you will be so far away. ( note to self do not look outside or ill go crazzy )
If u sit in ur spaceship and count till 15, how many seconds will pass?
Thats time, fuck dont get into big bad explanations, time is seconds, minutes , hours, ect.

Well, time is a forced movement, like falling (right?) We move along the t (time) axis, which IS movement (I think) so there is probably a way to stop it. But that'd involve a bunch of multi-dimensional stuff. Too much for my head.

if u were on the spaceship moving at light speed, u would see the people on earth as statues because

movement
SPACESHIP|-------------->|
| |
light | |
reflecting|-------------->|
of the | |
earth | |

the movement is the same distance in the same time, so u would only see a picture of what was happening at the time that u started to go at light speed.

now if u go faster than light speed would it all be blank?

movement
SPACESHIP|---------------+---->
| |
light | |
reflecting|-------------->|
of the | |
earth | |

the reflected light never reaches u!

I believe time is a constant, it wouldn't change. but the period between the reflection would change!

Time constant! My god you're foolish. We can disprove that time is constant with two atomic clocks and an airplane. There is no universal constant, the average speed of light changes, and actually the constant c has slowed down. Time is not movement across some plane it is a far move complicated then that. And first off we are assuming time itself exists, which we can't even prove. Time is relative. Another fact is that every way to even begin to count time has more variables that we even account for, once again if time even exists. Current theories dictate that time is merely a sequence of frames, that things can't even have movement on a plane since the plane itself is not solid. Furthermore theories dictate that everything might have happened at once, that nothing is in doubt, that the universe into itself was created and destroyed all at once, in something that is not even time, and that what we are experience is a way to interpret that which is not.

Now beyond all of this, nothing is proven, relativity itself is a theory. You are welcome to theorize that there is no relativity, but currently we believe in a theory which mounds of evidence, and mathematics support.

I would think it would depend on how you measure time. Time in the modern day world is measured on light cycles (day and night) of 24 hours. Time at the speed of light would have nothing to be compared to (that I know of).

Default Re: time stops

gravity has no speed it is a force and the force it places on you depends on the mass of the object placing the force on you

Time is only the name given to the fact that there is change do basicaly time = change and hours, minutes, and seconds is our way of measuring the change

Time does change the faster you go and you cant say how long does it take for you to go around the earth at the seed of light because when you say 2 seconds that means for us in our time it would be 2 seconds but on the spaceship it would take longer because time is slowed down

My question is how much does time slow down for every somany miles a second you move because if we know that we can calculate the speed of time in the ship and outside because the amount the time slows down should be constant the fater you go it will always slow down at the same "speed"

As for gravity not having any speed: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99993282
There is controversy but it's mostly accepted that gravity moves at the speed of light. It's a wave, like light.

As for the force of gravity: Gravity doesn't necessarily exert a force on an object as much as it curves spacetime. What was once straight has now been curved by the mass of an object, forcing the "straight" path another object takes to be curved as well. The object is still moving straight, it's just that we don't see it as straight.

Sorry for redundancy in that explanation.

hmm so the faster you go the more time slows down. ok so that would explain why the stupid clock in my car is always gettin slower and slower(ive had it checked too and even put in a new one)

um, gravity acts on all matter all the time, but i *think* there is some theorizing that gravity actually propogates, as a quantum interaction like a pseudo-particle, or as an 11th or 26th dimensional string vibration; there would be measurable delays in the effects of, say, a newly collapsed singularity on the universe at large.

let's say that i'm a photon travelling around the earth: no time elapses for me! i have no mass; the only difference in the vacuous space around me is my own prescence, so there is no way for me to tell just *when and where* i am. somebody on earth watching me (would have to be someone who can observe photons without changing their locations!) would notice that 2 seconds have elapsed in my circuit. now, let's send a spaceship around the earth at close to c; (if the ship has mass, then it will travel at less than the speed of light, period) it will thus spend 2.0003 seconds in transit to the observer on earth. the pilot of the ship would experience like 1.9997 sec. the times would be close to the same thing, because the distance is so short. if you flew to alpha centauri and back at close to c, everybody you left would be old and dead upon your return. the relative time difference would depend on your speed as a fraction of c. again, i, as a photon, could fly to alpha centauri and back and experience no time difference.

in fact, i might even make a quantum leap and cover the distance instantaneously, or maybe my cousin, also a photon, would appear on earth just as i disappear from alpha centauri. you couldn't tell, since photons are identical. happens y'know.

Default Re: time stops

Can anyone here explain time using einsteins theory in a way that coralates with everything else? i think not...

BUT everything must corralate ( this is MY theory make of it what you will )

so what is time? and what affects happen when you aproch and or surpass the speed of light?

in order to explain my theory to its fullest i must give you some background information first

scientist have allways been puzzled by the unlimitedness of space the universe can go on forever there is no physical wall they say becuase if there where ...what would be beyond that? and recently scientists have discovered that each quark proton atom knows where every other proton quark or atom is ( i believe this is part of the theory of quantum mechanics )

this of course signifys a unity of all things in our universe

i submit to you that our universe is not a universe of *spca and time* but is a universe of *speed and light* wich realy isnt much defferint other then it takes and advances the theory's of teh other universe

now to the root of my point i say that while by our definition of *space* our universe is indless becuase i think that given enough force something could go on for eternity through our universe

i think that the supposed *wall* to our universe isnt in how far we go before we hit it...but how fast

light is a measurable partice...it is the smallest of such particle's wich are stable in our universe *i tink quarks are faster then light and thereforeslip in and out of our universe constently*

this is where i think einstein made his criticle error in his theory on time travel and light i cant begin to imagine how that geniues messed it up...but i think he did

anyway now that you have some refrence information ill tell you my opinion on what would happen if you reached/surpassed the speed of light

as i stated earlier the theory that the universe has no physical end is true...however NOTHING can exist in a perpetual state without change EVERYTHING changes so must the universe...when you reach the speed oflight you are at the last bastion on stability for our known cosmos...when you surpass it...who knows i frankly have been able to work out far 2 many logicall conclusions to list them all however i will list my favorite 2 conclusions *the ones that make the most since to me*

1st when u surpase the speed of light you are exiting our universe and entering the place where god created the universe *you would have to leave the universe to get there becuase if he was in the universe when he created it ...lol u can figure out why its not possible from here i dun thnk i have to explain anymore* of course i say "place" in a very loose term as there is no place outside of gods creation

2nd and slightly more hopefull theory for you non-believers out there is that you leave our universes "dimension" in reality and enter into another "dimension" of reality this theory has several problems that the first doesnt one being the fact that if u can speed up to enter another ( higher? ) dimension cant you slowdown to enter a lower one? and idont mean physically slow down i mean atomicly if you accept this theory then it opens up ALL kinds of huge and time consuming things to comprehind and work through ( this is why i favor this theory...im at a lose for wich one to choose lol ) what exists in these other dimensions i cannot conjecture on with any real logic accept to say one things...our current "laws" of space time *wich are "supposed" to exist everywhere* would almost certeinly NOT exist here
