Default Buying a scanner

Hey,

I'm not so new to all these scanners and ham radios. i took the Canadian test, but failed with a 56% (stupid new 60% limit). I was wondering, what would be a good scanner to start out with? i want it to be able to scan from the low end of the spectrum 0khz(0mhz)??? to 1ghz. If there is a scanner that can transmit too, please post. my spending range is up to about $500. Thanks for your help

EDIT: I am in Canada, of course. Winnipeg and Portage le prairie, etc are the closest and biggest cities near me

Before i try to provide you with a link with pictures and specifications, do you want a handheld or base radio?

Also scanners dont transmit, thats probably why you failed your test. You want an Amatueur tranceiver with extended receive.

Not a flame however if your paying money on a per test basis, do alot more study. The tests are easy and with a few weeks reading there is no reason why you should't hit the 90 plus percent mark.

Im sorry, i wanted a base station. I didn't fail because i didnt know a scanner transmitted. I thought you could modify them so they could.

Have you taken the RAC exam? thats the Canadian one. It's not all reading and than you go and write a 10 question exam and pass no matter what. It's, put in 40 hours mandatory, sitting in a classroom, studying formulae and reading about ohm's law and learning how far this type of antennae will pick up over that type of antennae. None of it was hands on, it was all formulas you had to know and a 300 page book you had to read. I was 13 when i took the course with no one in my family who was familar with electronics and no-one to turn to for help. That's why i failed.

EDIT: Grammar mistakes

No i havn't sat the Canadian test yet as im in Australia

As for your radio, i would strongly suggest getting a dedicated receiver that covers the 0-1000 Mhz range you want. Then purchasing a dedicated transmitter for the band you want, as getting everything you want all in one package for under $500 you will most likely end up with an old second hand radio lacking in functions. As most base radios with all band receive PLUS transmit in certain bands fetch a good price for a decent model.

Work out what you want first either scanner or transmitter get it and save for the other. You will end up with 2 decent radios and can have the pleasure of listening to the police etc AND talking to people at the same time.
