Re: Cell phone tracking
Sad. It's a violation of our privacy, they have no right to do that.

Re: Cell phone tracking
You're right Dion. But I'll figure: Hey, I bought this, and now I'm going to take that shit out! It's not hard to mod comm equipment like that...

Re: Cell phone tracking
I doubt it's even that hard.
It may be as simple as pulling a chip out of a board...
But we won't know until they come out.

Re: Cell phone tracking
Just stock up on older model phones? There might actually be a high resale market in the units if that becomes a reality.
My Nokia 8260 has withstood atleast a few dozen drops onto hard pavement, being left out in the rain, coffee spilled on it, the face plate is cracked, it's all scratched up, the ink for the numbers and letters on the keys are all rubbed off, but i would never get rid of this phone for any other. The signal is clear, battery life is excellant, this phone has never let me down despite all the abuse i put it through.

wrongo. in fact, the cell phones you are all using today could, with the use of radio triangulation, allow someone to trace your position. think about it. Your cell phone is emitting a radio message. Although it is communicating with only one cell tower for the actual call (until you're in the crossover zone and the tower you're using gets you to jump to the next tower down the road), more than one cell tower is actually receiving your signal. Lets say the time it takes for your cell's signal to reach tower 1 is 1 second (very much exaggerated, the signal's strength would be gone at 1 lightsecond away). Lets say the time it takes for the signal to reach the next nearest tower is 2 seconds. We also know the velocity is the speed of light. Subbing t1 and t2 into "velocity = (distance/time)", we now know the distance between your cell phone and tower 1, and between your cell phone and tower 2. There's now only two points where you could be. Find the distance to a third tower, and they have your exact position pinpointed. no GPS needed.
