Define PIRATE RADIO
Wouldnt Pirate radio be hacking into an existing signal of an existing radio station?
Running a Radio Free style station isnt piracy. is it?

But doesnt piracy mean to steal or a hostile take over?
How is that stealing or how is it hostile?
Its just telling the government this is just another way for them to tax us civilians

Aha! What you fail to realize, greenspam, is that thes frequencies are owned by the government and leased to users. This sounds stupid but it is true, I don't fully understand how we as a people let our own government do this. But what really gets me is that they own something that does and does not really exist. This meaning that it is something we cant touch or see or smell, yet it is real. Waht's next tax on breathing??

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
but "We the People" are the Government. (At least in the USA) so when 'The government owns the Radio Waves" then its the peoples radio waves. so when you purchase a license to run a radio station then the revenues goes to the people in the form of Taxes.
In Theory that makes sense. but the problem I have is Only the rich and powerful are the ones that can truely afford to pay for a license and run a station. Then there is the problem of every one of these business monopizing on the only few AM and FM frequencies used today. Knowing now that there are plenty of welthy people in this country that may want a crack at running their own Radio Stations for profit or just for Public service, Should there then be a Lottery for these frequencies every year or Bi-year? Why should the same assholes get to keep the right to run their radio stations off of the same ariwave freqs? And can we apply this to Television as well? And should the Government set aside a few Frequencies for the poorer people or the public to run Public (Non profit) radio station (Like the force the cable companies to do) and allow different people with make shift radio transmiters to run their own radio stations at certain times of the day or share the frequency year round?

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
in my opinion I am not totaly sure it is about some rich yupie puke wanting to run a radio station. In my semi parinoid little mind I tend to believe that the reason the goverment keeps control over airwaves. Is the same as why they keep the same type of control over television and newspapers. The airwaves and sometimes even music are ways of comunication.comunication that reaches alot of people spaced out.therefore why would they want to let that be freely distributed?as for allowing the richer people to run it.ever notice who most of the laws and taxes favor?the rich because unfortunately this so called free country is slowly being taken from it's citizens who are being made poorer and poorer to improve the lives of the rich pricks whom would like to turn us into some type of finacialy productive communisim in order to make them richer. So if you know how fire up and broadcast anyway.More power to you

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
Thats odd that you used the term "Communism" when in fact it would be capitalism. By me asking for a lottery is a form of Equality and that equates into a Communist way of thinking. So actually i was being communist about saying we should share the air waves. I wonder if our forefothers were communist. Equality for all (Except Women and Blacks) but of course we ammended these laws to be more fair. as we ammended them we also made it easier for the Government to become its own entity and not be "The People".

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
1. There is something called the citizens band radio. Like anyone listens to it. 2. I don't think it has so much to do with censorship (though that is part of it) as greed. Remember when stamps cost a quarter? The price keeps on rising. I think they got too greedy though when they tried to put 3 cents postage on E-mails.

I remember when COMP-U-Suck err i mean serve charged for each download. until other online services and ISPs made it a flat fee. but then again AOL did the same thing too for a while.

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
Some kids with a shortwave radio were using it in the city and I heard them talking on my radio. They took over the radio station in the area that way temporarrily for a few nights or so. That is radio piracy I guess but I guess it didn't take over the entire station so not really piracy. The CIA has pirated radio stations before to broadcast propaganda I think in some foreign countries. Some revolutionists do this too but they can get in trouble more than the CIA cuz they're from there I guess. ***I have an idea: On antennae phones if ur talking to someone u can hear it over scanners right if ur in that area. Soooo this could be used as a form of communication in small areas. It could be a kind of local pirate free radio station.

Nope thats wrong Biot. Some boats used to transmit pirate radio out on AM from international waters where there was no law against it, but this died out after it became illegal to sponsor them (advertise) and the popularity of AM died, FM doesn't have the range.

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
How did the government come to run the airwaves? Well, back in 1909 when "San Jose Calling" first started broadcasting from San Jose, there were no rules. There was no government agency to oversee anything.
What happened is that lots of experimenters started operating radio stations. The known radio spectrum (in those days, about 800 to 1050 kHz on the AM band) filled up fast and the it became a sea of noise.
The federal government took over licensing of stations because it was clear that the people who ran radio stations weren't going to police themselves. So, by 1920, the Federal Radio Commission was in place.
The official philosophy stated in the Communications Act of 1934 is that the airwaves belong to the people and the goverment gives a license for a set period of time to allow a station to operate in the public's (1) interest, (2) convenience, or (3) necessity. When a license is renewed, a station must show that it has done this.

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
Im confused. How can boats transmit AM from "International Waters" since International Waters are 200 miles off the coast of any country. And i think FM carries farther then AM because i live 200 miles from reno and i pick up those stations just fine but can hardly pick up am stations 40 miles away. Im not saying AM cant travel the 200 miles but what would be the point. it would be alot of white noise in the background. quote: Originally posted by Mustard: Nope thats wrong Biot. Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
International waters are 12 miles offshore. AM does carry better. Simply because it has frequencys in the kilohertz while FM is in the megahertz. More hertz = more energy. In AM the saved energy is used to put out more radio waves, therefore stronger signal.

ha. pump up the volume. ah the lovely samantha mathis. yeah that movie was based on some guys life. there is a book on him available from loompanics unlimited. as are a couple of other books. ive also heard that the ONLY WAY to transmit is to do it from a moving vehicle like a van. cause if you are stationary the fcc can home in on your signal.

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
pirate radio is the unauthorised transmission of a signal on a frequency in wich the user is not authorised or licenced to use.it doesnt matter if the frequency is in use by another service or operator or not. citizen radio or "citizen band" frequencies are totally legal to use, some countries require a small fee or callsign, australia doesnt.side band transmission travels the farest them am and fm travels the least distance.also the higher the frequency being used the less the signal travels.

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
Pirate radio is the unauthorised broadcast of a signal on a frequency not designated or authorised to the user.It doesnt matter if that frequency is in use or not.To broadcast as a pirate you will need a HF transmitter,as HF signals can travel round the world.Amatur radios such as Kenwood,Icom,Yaseu are good.It needs to be able to recieve in the 0-30mhz range and it will transmit at selected frequencies in that range. There is modifications listed on the net that enable your radio to transmit in the entire 0-30mhz range.Get a bandplan for the 0-30mhz range and it will list what frequencies are dedicated to what then you can work out where you would like to transmit your broadcast.Eg some segments are for Marine,Military,Aircraft,Music etc.Your transmitter will probably transmit at 100watts,this is ok but if you want to get serious then obtain a linear amplifier of at least 500watts which will give your signal alot more power and thus be heard by more users.Sideband travels farest, then AM then FM,most people use AM for pirate broadcast. Also the lower the frequency the further it will transmit.

Re: Define PIRATE RADIO
right on BigBeare!! In a way this is how it works...if a local radio station is currently running its programming and all of a sudden, someone comes "over" the airwaves to drown out whatever is playing for a few seconds/minutes/hours..(against the law) or they could go somewhere else in the Radio Band(s) to set up a daily/weekly/monthly secret "on air" propoganda whatever...etc(also against the law). But most schools have a their own radio station..albeit, a low wattage maybe 2 watts..doesn't sound like much, but 2 watts would cover 1 mile radius around the school!! Don't know about U.S.A.,but in Canada, i could apply for a 1 watt station and call it a cool station name and broadcast within a 1/2 mile of my home and play music, perhaps local advertisements, community events...just like a real station....in some cases, you may need to get an Amateur Radio licence..goto to www.ARRL.com on how to become licenced..really cheap and fun to learn!!
