Replace "pirate" with "outlaw" and it sort of helps with the picture. Pirate radio is just someone with a transmitter and no license, putting out whatever he feels like, until the FCC triangulates on his position and sends in the hounds.

Pirate Radio is, as aforementioned, Broadcasting outside of the public band without a lisence to do so. However, here we must make a distintion between Pirate radio and Guerilla radio.

Pirates play music, or spew whatever's on their minds.

Guerillas have a politically directed aim, usually the overthrow of a specific government.

Good luck finding pirate radio, all you need is a tuner, but there isn't much out there. To really find anything you have to know "people" in your area.

*With a sly mile* The stuff is easy to get, try hamventions for the best price, or run on down to Radioshack for convenience. Just don't mail order anything that might tip the FCC off. The FCC sucks rancid ass, btw.

You can throw together a shoddy low distance set up in the AM band for about a hundred bucks. But if you want good distance in a crisp FM band then you best have plenty of money, for mixing equipment, signal amps, big antennas, and power supplies for them secluded areas you'll be using.

Mobile, don't forget to make it mobile, otherwise you won't be on the air for long.

That's arguable. The only times the FCC really cracks down is when you're either guerilla broadcasting or TV broadcasting.

As long as you do short transmissions and, broadcast at random times, and use different frequencies it an be done. It is dangerous, but I was going for the cheap factor.

Technically, I don't think the location has to be mobile. If you could go into a secluded area with a whip antenna you could pull it off well enough to get your kicks.

I was sitting back at work today, and it hit me out of nowhere. I read a newsweek article back when the napster case was under way. The article predicted that after napsters fall, several similar sites would come up. And that would happen for a few years, and a whole bunch of shi happens over fifteen years leading to media transmissions in general requiring lisences with fees and stuff. Kind of scary with that p2p bill that just passed...

How does the FCC 'triangulate' your position; this is interesting shit. Also, what kind of trouble do you get into for guerrila radio? Has any of you been busted or personally know someone who has?

i'de like to try out the Am bands.. just really weak, enough to hear it on my own stereo in the house... but after then i'de try to get into an fm band... (there are alot open around here)... so if i found a freq. that was far between two other freq's... would the fcc try to find me? or would they be like "just some twerp".

because now that i think of it.. it would be fun to talk live when your wasted on mush or something.

You can buy little FM transmitters from radio shack if you wanna transmit throughout your house, but thats fucking stupid.

Ide just go for a small AM thing [beyond your house! Give it some usefulness] and not even worry about FM until you seriously have a reason, and know what youre doing! Cuz its not worth it to take over an FM band to play your favourite CD all day, and quickly get caught and shut down. Its a waste of money.

It's actually fairly easy for the FCC to find you. First, they have rockin directional antennas. Then, they use this really bitchin reciever that's all tripped out hi-tech style. Then, using people in different points they ensnare you in a circle by finding the lines of your TX. Trigonometry is involved, hence "triangulate". Then they slowly sweep in on your signal until *BOOM* shit.
