| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more! |

Favorite game
There have been many polls on "Best Game EVER" but that is pretty useless. I mean, everyone has diffrent preferences. Some people like RPGs, others like first person shooters, some like consoles others prefer to game on PCs, etc.
So what is YOUR favorite game. It's hard to pick an all time favorite, so you can list more games if you want to.
Oh, and please say why you like the game so much, did you like if from the start,...

Re: Favorite game
I would have to say starcraft or FF1, ive played both a million times and I still enjoy it. FF1's gameplay rocked, since they didnt have graphics back then . And starcraft is genius. What about you XeNobiTe you didn't name anything.

Re: Favorite game
I don't know what game I like the most, but I'm betting it's the one I play the most.. soo...
Tribes 2
It's just.. great... It's the greatest first person shooter in my opinion. It's good for short spurts when I'm bored or when I really want to sit down and play. You can always improve and it's ever expanding. They just released an update adding about 30 maps and 3 different game modes. Tribes 2 + cable modem = bliss.
I have other favorites such as Warcraft 3, Red Alert 2, Max Payne, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, and others but Tribes 2 is the most fun all the time.

Re: Favorite game
Your right there are just so many to choose from. However these are some of the games that I really like. There are alot more but these games have brought me countless hours of fun.
Tomb Raider: The vast worlds to explore all of the dead stuff you leave in your wake. I love the Whole series.
Jet Moto: Fast cut throat racing. Catching huge air off of almost anything. Great game. The second one sucked though.
Resident evil: Play it alone at night in the dark, truly a scary game. And the camera angles are cool.
Tecmo's Deception: Its fun to play the bad guy! Killing and stealing souls to release Satan. Building traps to spring on your victims. I love this game.
Kagero Deception II: Same game play as the first but Advanced 3D graphics and third person view. Its just so much fun dropping Big Rocks or vats of lava onto victims heads.
Twisted Metal: legal road rage!
Tekken and Soul Blade: Are my favorite fighting games.

Starcraft because everytime you play someone different you have to change your tactics. One of my favourite fighting games is Bloody Roar 2 on the playstation because it's plain fun and the combos ain't bad neither.

Re: Favorite game
Here's my top 5.
1)My favorite game is Grim Fandango. This game had soooo much soul, it was just wonderful. No blood, no guts, no fast shooting action, but awsome story, freaky beatniks, groovy music, exotic locations, funny dialogs (with mexican accents), nice cut-scenes, quite nice puzzles. http://www.lucasarts.com/products/grim/grim_spotlight.htm
-----------------------------------------
2)The runner up is Omikron: Nomad soul. The graphic pretty much sucked, but the game was really original. It was a combination of an RPG, beat 'em up (Tekken style), and shoot 'em up with a nice story. David Bowie did the soundtrack on this game and even had a role (which wasn't really spectacular). This game also has lots of soul put into it. And the abillity to swich beteen characters was sooooo cool (I think it was called soul morphing).
-----------------------------------------
3)On the 3th place is the Lagecy of Kain series. I like all four games. They were all very original and also had soul. Kains and Raziels special abillities were pretty cool and the in geme cut-scenes were awsome (especially in soul reaver 2). The fighting was a little "sticky" at some points but that didn't ruin the greatness of the games.
-----------------------------------------
4)StarCraft (+broodwar) is my favorite strategy game. It's not the gameplay I like so much (well of course the gamplay is very cool), but it's the story. I could watch the cut-scenes over and over again for hours.
-----------------------------------------
5)And last (but not least) is Half-Life (+Counter-Strike). Well I can't mention cs without mentioning hl. When I first played hl, I was like: "This game suck harder than Jenna Jameson". I didn't like the game at all, but afther a level or two, I got caught in the story and played 24 hours straight to finish it. Then I played it again. The intro was sooo cool. No other game had an intro like that (you know, when you ride the train in the underground facility). The grunts were smart (for the time). The story about governement cover ups and black ops was good too (allthought the aliens were a little exagerated). Those vixen chicks were sooo dam awsome. They did a 3x backflip and shoot your ass dead from a silenced .22.
Well sytem shock 2 had all those things + more, but still wasn't better than hl.
As for cs, the realistic weapons and well designes levels just made this mod awsome. I mean Q3A and UT were fun, but they lacked the tactics and reallity of cs + well balanced weapons.

Bah, I downloaded the demo and let me tell you, there's nothing special about this game. It's pretty fun and the graphics are good. But I still had much more fun playing Operation Flashpoint. This game doesn't even get close to counter-strike.
Well comparing this game to cs is pretty pointless, but still, I dunno. The game seems to be having it all, but it's still missing something. It got boring too damn quick. Maybe the demo just sucks.

Re: Favorite game
Any Final Fantasy These games are the Best, adicting to the very end. They have a great story line, and plenty of side quests.
Resident Evil (just about all of them) These games are the best, scary, full of weapons, and plenty of surprises.
Tony Hawk 3 Can any one say they don't have a good time playing Tony Hawk?
GTA 2 Ever felt really bad, and just wanted to run wild through your city with a basooka, this game helps.
State of Emergency This game is just plain cool, and its fun as hell.
Zelda, Link to the Past. (SNES) This game is great, I have played throught about 20 times. Talking bout it makes me want to play it again.
And Starcraft probably ranks up there pretty high too. Starcraft do i even need to explain why i liek this game.
However if i had to choose a favorite of these it would have to be the Final Fantasy series or Zelda, Link to the Past.

I can. It gets too boring too quickly once you've seen all the tricks. Unless they made some sort of freaky improvement from THPS2 then after the levels and stuff the replay value is shit. But that's just my opinion.

I'd say I have two favorite games...one was about brutal, insanely skilled competition, the other was an escapist fantasy Oldschool Quake Team Fortress. Nothing released since has come anywhere close TFC is an abomination!! HWGUY jumps, moves, and shoots? WTF?!? Final Fantasy 2 (4 in japan). The music and the atmosphere make this game. I actually prefer the dialogue of the SNES original, not the PlayStation rehash with supposedly "improved dialogue." A lot of good lines were changed...someone who didn't give a fuck screwed with my favorite rpg!! DAMMIT! Square has really gone downhill since FF3(6). Sellout bastards.

The PS2 isn't shit (altho I don't own one). It's a damn nice console. It has crapy graphics, I admit, but with it's many games (and most of it's games are RPG, adventure/action, games with lots of soul and style) it doesn't need good graphics. The ps2 controller is pretty sweet, seen as how it's the only controller that resembles the SNES controller(in a way). Besides, you can't say that the xbox controller is better. That thing is fucking bigger than a dreamcast console itself. The xbox was designed to be a console with the best graphics ever or something. Well there already is something like that. It's called a pc dumbass. The xbox isn't anything more than a shitty assembled pc. With the games the xbox has now, it isn't even worth looking at (too damn expensive). If they don't bring out any good games for the box, it'll go down soon. If you want to game only for the graphics, then get yourself a (good)pc. And I doubt anyone wants to game like that, seen as how the new games for the pc are shit (not all of course, maffia was pretty sweet). My favorite games for the pc are between '97-2000. The graphics sucked back then, bet the games're still better than the once they bring out now. Well that's at least my opinion.

Re: Favorite game
Deus Ex (God from the Machine) simply the best game ever created hands down, this is story wise by the way, not multiplayer capabilities as it has NONE.
It uses the Unreal Tournament engine and pulls off amazing interactive cities from New York to Hong Kong. With the most amazing story ever set in a game, it feels like a god damn movie!
It one game of the year from basically every gamers magazine (havent found ONE that did not vote it game of the year) and Im disappointed no one has yet mentioned it.
The story begins with you as a nanotechnology augmented GMan beginning a career in an antiterrorist outfit called UNATCO. The forces youre up against are a rag tag bunch of wellarmed militia members called the NSF (National Secessionist Forces), whose idea of a good time is to knock back a couple of brewskies and annex Washington, Oregon and Northern California. Couple this chaos with a disease called the "gray plague" that is quickly wiping out billions of the Earths inhabitants. Simultaneously, the vaccine is in mysterious short supply and youve got the makings for a classic conspiracy story that contains more twists and turns than a San Francisco road map. It should be of no surprise that somewhere during the game you begin to question your loyalties, especially when other organizations such as FEMA, the Illuminati, Chinese gangs and MJ12 (Art Bell, call your office) begin popping up in the storyline.
The way you model your character really makes a significant impact on how the game plays, so replay ability for Deus Ex is unsurpassed by any other game in its genre.
Ill stop now, I sound like an advert or something, or a complete nut.

that's my whole point, you're an idiot. sure, the XBOX is better graphically, and there are some games that really kick ass, but it's false to say that PS2 has no good games. also, do you mean to say that big, bulky XBOX controller is better than the smooth, slick PS2 controller? wtf? or, you got the Japanese controller? I'm 17, actually. I respect someones opinion when it has some amount of truth to it (ie. you don't like action/racing games, therefore, you don't like PS2) I could understand that, but bad graphics? bad games? bad controller? what the hell are you smoking?

The graphics aren't bad if you compare them with some older system (e.g. dreamcast, N64,..). But for the new generation of gaming systems, the PS2 has the worse graphics (altho this is hardly noticable on your tv screen). But that's not the point. I'd rather game on my SNES than on the xbox. With a console like PS2, the graphics aren't important. Of course the controller is much better than the xbox controller. There's no argue about that.

There are two games sharing first place on my list. Diablo II and StarCraft. Unfortunately, with my new job, time really has been in short supply... so now I'm edgy. I know someone with a PS/2, and I love playing Dead or Alive 2. And for the record, those graphics do NOT suck.

yes. I don't know where the "crappy" graphics came from. If you people think those are actually BAD graphics, then you're simply too jaded.

Re: Favorite game
My fave games in no particular order and are either console, arcade or PC! Resident Evil: (ALL)(Great storyline and more scares than most horror films) Silent Hill: Totally underrated very freaky and more adult than RE massive replay value with the different endings (UFO etc) Medal of Honour Allied Assault: Storming the beach is straight out of Private Ryan. Deus EX: So So So So So very very involving I couldnt wait to get home from work while playing this and even gave it preference to drugs at times. Silent Scope 2(Arcade not console): Very innovative and by far the best arcade gun game. Red Faction: Really cool game with a strong and involvig story. Grand Theft Auto 3: Mayhem great graphics massive replay value and who wouldnt want to shoot a cop that just tried to bust you or fuck a hooker and beat the shit out of her and take your money back cos she had a stanky pussy. Star Wars Xwing and Starfighter games(Some of the best space shooters around) Max Payne: So original in parts and you really do get sucked into the story and those fucking dream sequences are so frighteningly realistic. Half Life: Keep your Unreal and Unreal tourney etc this beats them hands down. Mortal Kombat: The first one in the arcade was so cool at the time and it was great as Sub Zero to rip someones head and spine out or turn them into a baby. And the satisfaction of getting to fight and kill that reptile prick. Pure raw gaming. Killer Instinct(Arcade not Gold on N64) The big 48 hit combos moving around your envoirns far better than Tekken at the time and the killer moves at the end like Fulgores head transforming to a set of machine guns and cutting your oppnent in half. Ahhhh the memories. There are loads more that are really good too but dont forget all the really piss poor ones for every one good one. I mean I never had the patince to get into the Final fantasy games and Tomb Raider had some piss poor light on action sequels Unreal Tourney onPS2 was soo bad I played it for a day and got a refund!
