| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more! |

MMORPGs
Why do most(basically all) MMORPGs have a monthly fee? You would think a MMORPG server wouldnt be much harder to maintain than something like Battle.net, or Red factions server system, or neverwinter nights?
Also, anyone know of any good free MMORPGs? I loved UO, but I realized paying to play isnt worth it.

Exactly. You have an obligation to fill then because your paying money. You can't just casually go at it, you have to get your moneys worth now. You payed to buy the game, now do you really want to have to pay over and over and over again just to be able to play it?

Re: MMORPGs
MMORPG servers are setup COMPLETELY different from battle.net. In battle.net you simply go to meet other players, it's basically a big chat room. Once the game starts you dont even need to be connected to battle.net anymore.
With MMORPGS everything is done on the server. You're always connected to the server, they have huge customer service divisions, and they continue to add new content. The bandwidth usage alone is enough to REQUIRE a monthly fee.
And a monthly fee isnt that bad if you play the game a lot. A $15 fee is basically like buying a new game every 3 months and, if you're not bored of the game by then, you can just cancel your account.

All by yourself eh? Ha ha ha. I went looking for MMORPG's, and couldnt find any good free one's, except for free UO servers. So i joined the Alpha team on planeshift.

Re: MMORPGs
runescape was good until they made it p2p so it blows horse shit now. I don't mind buying a game like asherons call or everquest but the monthly fee's are what pisses me off. And if i don't have 5 hours to play it im not really getting my money's worth. A 1 time fee isn't that bad either. 20 dollars and you can play for eternity.
