Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

depends what kind of game you're interested in creating, but since you say you're new to this i suggest DarkBASIC, alot like QuickBASIC, 'cept it can use more advanced graphics.

Lol, you dont just sit down and "make" a game. Unless you mean something like pong. You need to learn a programming language, C++ or Visual Basic will work. Then you need to learn how to use graphics, make your own graphics, make and use sound files, etc etc. Making a real game isnt an easy thing to do, and usually takes alot of people.

To get the concept down, look around the web for QuickBasic books. Find one that focuses on games, and then either order it online, or order it through your local chapters or soemthing. Chances are it will come with the compilers and such, if not theyre free to download.

I once saw a book like that, but could never find it again. It was for people who are complete beginners, and used the creation of a few games to teach you the concepts. I dont remember if it was Quick Basic, Q-Basic, or what. I remember there are two different ones that are similar. Aww hell, just look for it. You wont be making anything fancy [most likely some dos frogger game] but itll give you an idea of what a game requires.

there is a hell of alot more to games than just learning c or vb. most of the time you have to posses some intimate knowledge of windows API's if you want to take atvantage of the pc as a gaming platform. you need to at least know direct x well and most likely some networking API's if you plan to do multiplayer.

'there is a hell of alot more to games than just learning c or vb'

It didnt seem like he knowed anything, i figured him learning a programming language, would make him realize there is ALOT to making a good game.

'most of the time you have to posses some intimate knowledge of windows API's if you want to take atvantage of the pc as a gaming platform'

I just started learning how to use API's in VB. Its alot like C++ so its not that hard. And there are books you can but that state all the funtions in all the windows API's.

Mr._Violence, any progress?
