Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

Default Piracy: what the hell?

I still don't understand the attraction to Piracy. What's the big deal? Why would anyone rather pirate games? is it just because you can "rebel against the system"?
That's not rebelling! What's the point??

The point is, you can get a $2,000 program like Maya for the price of the electricity it takes to run your comp while your downloading it.

As far as games are concerned, I think piracy sucks, almost every gaming company I know has been struggling in a major way for over a year or more now.. $50 a game might seem like a lot, but if you consider that the average game usually takes at least 18 people at least 18 months to develop (and we're talking highly skilled artists, programmers, musicians, etc), you start to realise that unless they manage to sell a HUGE amount of a particular game, most companies will barely cover costs, once you consider advertising, administrative wages, physical production costs and all the other fun extras..

No software designer has ever gone out of business due to Warez. Noone has ever been legally prosecuted for owning or downloading Warez (however the distributors are another case entirely).

Oh really?.. Sure about that?..

Don't pay much attention to gaming news huh?.. plenty of companies with highly successful games have recently gone out of business, perhaps not solely due to piracy, but if everyone who played their games actually had bought a copy, they quite possibly could still have been in business..

Eg, GOD games (gathering of developers)..aka the people who published Max Payne.. now a completely kaput company, shortly after releasing MP.

wow the hardcore warez fucker is trying to act all tough. what a fucking pathetic sight. please stop, your scaring me.

pirating is just about the cost. morons like ChibiMiko use it as an outlet for what ever reason and an attempt to act all harcore, and as you said, "rebel against the system". people think that its an underground special club with passwords and secrets, but the only ones who actually accomplish anything are the crackers, not the try hard tag-alongs, not mentioning a certain name again.

id say that 90% of people who actually downloaded pirated programs do it purely because it is too expensive. i know how hard it is to write a half decent piece of software, and i belive that developers should be paid for their work, but something like cool edit, bryce or dreamweaver going for about $500 is just over the top. i cannot simply afford that amount of cash, esspecaily when i can find and download it in a few hours.

Yeah, but we're talking about GAMES pirating here, given this is the GPP forum..

$50 is not too much, really, but I know that an awful lot of people pirate games.

I agree with wintermute completely. I can understand when there's a certain program that costs too much, but I'm talking games here.
These guys that make your favorite games, they'll spend years to get it right. They deserve to be paid for there efforts.

Look at SNK. everyone I know downloaded their stuff, while they slowly went Bankrupt in N. america, and then in Japan, too. That's not right! And don't give me the whole "costs too much" crap. The NGPC was inexpensive.

Next thing ya know, treasure is out of business! (oh god... no more good games)

Anywho, I think you get my point.

Ciao!

Right now even the big boys are hurting.. for a year or more both eidos, sega and a couple other companies I know have stopped sending out press review copies, because they simply can't afford to.. Even sony (usually the most generous of publishers) has cut down on what they send, and to who, and require usually a fax copy of a previous recent review of one of their games...

In harsh times like this, it's quite possible that if everyone paid for their games, we'd be able to shore up those companies that are hurting, because unless things start looking up soon, I can guarantee that some small and not so small companies are going to be out of business.

i think pirating is fine...i buy the system...controllers and everything else i need which is not a game.

most of my friends pirate games from warez sites as well as download programs

games do cost too much, $50 is alot to pay for a game which might not be good at all, you could go and rent it first for a small price to see if its good, but you can download it or burn it for almost free and throw it out if you dont like it or even sell it to someone who does.

did you see the prices of the gameboy advance games?

thats the biggest bullshit ever.

virtua fighter 4 for ps2 = 79.99(cdn) , sonic adventures for gameboy advance = 79.99 or 75.99 in other store...but thats too much, the system costs whatever $200, $300, or $500...games are too much

How many hours do you play an average game for?..

I'm thinking at least 50-100 for most games..

You go see a movie, you pay what, $8-10 for max 3 hours entertainment..

So what, 50c to $1.00 an hour to play a game is too much?

And the fact remains, if you don't at least buy some games, you're killing the developers and publishers.

where do you buy games? I don't remember My gameboy advance costing over $300. I got mine at around $200 spot on, but I worked for the money to buy it

I can buy Dreamcast games for 15-30 bucks, that seems pretty cheap to me.

And why would you spend your hard earned cash on something that sucks??

Yeah, if I don't like it, ignore it and it'll go away? Way to go with the mature attitude and reasoning there..

I just think you all need to think about companies like gathering of developers.. because regardless of their skill in making a top notch game, they went under.. If noone pirated their game? they might have managed to stay afloat..

That's what bothers me.

you think hacking games makes you badass, and earns you bragging rights?? WTF??? that's sad, dude. anyways, that isn't the point. If you're gonna hack something, it should be for yourself, for reasons other than trying to look cool because you're too much of a loser to look good at anything else.

I have pirated games, and I'll probably do it again in the future. I have a real simple rule of thumb- I'll only nab games that I won't pay for myself anyway. I only have so much money, and I want to make sure to the best of my ability that the games it goes towards are the ones it's best spent on. (On the rare occasion that a game I get turns out to be phenomenal, I'll generally go buy it. Usually, they're a nice diversion, but that's it (ie. Shogun).)

As much as I'm for supporting good developers (no matter how much I may not be a fan of FPS games, Max Payne was amazingly done), and as asinine as some of the laws towards copy protection being suggested are, the companies themselves need to take better steps to protect their shit too. There will always be thieves. Remedy (or GOD or whoever) got trashed on Max Payne, but part of the problem was theirs- it was single-player only (MAJOR turnoff for a lot of people), which in turn led to them not being able to have an effective copy protection- so they didn't have any at all. They were asking to get screwed, and they did.

There are companies such as Blizzard and Black Isle who have been successful because their games are the absolute bomb. It can be done. The BG games don't even have copy protection, but they still had a shitload of sales. There's no doubt piracy hurts, but having a good product makes more of a difference.. maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but my hope is that some companies figure out that you can make money by putting out something that's high-quality, enough so that if the good-but-not-incredible games of the world (ie. Arcanum, Max Payne) wind up diminishing in number, they'll be replaced by better quality games, even if the number released overall decreases.

you have to remember that piracy is generally a crime of opertunity. most people dont go and look for cracks and pirated iso's but rather if their buddy buys a game they will burn it. most of the games that i have experience with were not games i would buy anyway but the opertunity was there so i went for it. and yes 50 is way too much. i dont mind paying 20 for a game but i still beleive that most software should be free. maybe 50 is cool for people like you making some cash but for a guy barly scraping minimum wage 50 can buy a lot of good shit.

Hah, yeah, like I have oodles of cash just lying around..

I don't have a problem with piracy as such, it's just, bothers me when some people NEVER EVER pay for a game... ya know?..

As for the price, I honestly don't believe the companies could do the games much cheaper.. I mean, even the top selling games only sell a few million copies, and if you think just about how much they'd pay in salaries for the team that makes the game, that's an AWFUL lot of money.

when cd burners first came out, i got as many games as i could for playststion, sold them and got tons of money...not really tons but alot for nothing...i dont understand why people would pay for a game when you can get it for free, its like me giving you $1000000, but you dont want it because you want to earn it or you dont know where the money comes from so you wont take it.

all the people who want to buy the games go ahead im not telling you to pirate them, i just dont know why you would buy them...

ummm..... I cracked this game myself and it turned out to be the first game i cracked with CD lock ver 2 it was a shock but it was bypassible just full install put in a fake cd-key and replace the exe with the crack and your done but the thing is why games that dont go online are easy to pirate is that the fake cd-keys and when logged onto there server's they notice it and wont let you on and it tells when more than 1 cd-key at a time is on, somtimes they can tell that its cracked, and when you need to patch it you have to keep the old exe or it wont patch right and then some guy has to proggram a new patch and all these things can hurt it AND this is only iso's i ant even going to tell you about RIP games there nearly impossible to go online

first....lol it dont really matter what fucking hardware you got..even some really bad comps can play those games on the lower rez...try closing your damn background tasks and wtf....wireless keyboard...? damn....no wonder...try updating your drivers, add to virtual ram, free up some space on whatev er drive your playing it off of and what OS are you exactly running.

and some computers just dont work well with games....like i know for a fact that dell comps dont work well.

Bad drivers. If you can't fix that, go buy a some shitty console and forget PC gaming.

I own an AMD Athlon TB 1.4, MSI Motherboar(266), 256 Meg RAM, GeForce 4 TI 4600, 30 and 40 gig hard disks (7200 rpm), Creative SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum, 10/100 fast ethernet, Happauge TV card, Eicon ADSL USB modem . Runing Win XP Pro. Getting all the good driver isn't always easy, but when I configurate all 'o it, it's A KILLER MACHINE. All games work perfectly.

I know a shitload about hardware and memory certanly isn't the problem (I didn't even say that, don't know where you got it from??) But these games work OK on my pc, and we have almost the same hardware. You have more ram but mine 3D accelerator is better . It isn't a hardware problem, nor is it the coding of the games. It's a software problem and one more thing. THE NEWEST DRIVERS ARN'T ALWAYS THE BEST.
