Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
I felt I should elaborate. Yes I fo believe time travel is possible.. to the future.
Time travel to the past is impossible because the information is already lost.
Time travel to the future has already been proven in theory by the Carosel. If it goes close enough to light speed centrifugal force would cause the speed of the outside to travel faster than the speed of light. Thus making the passengers travel through time at an alarming rate. Seconds would be hours etc. By the time they got done with their ride... who knows, days could have gone by?

Dion, scientists agree on that theory :P They declared that if there was a way to travel faster then light, that they could travel through time.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Wow, you learn something new everyday there. But yes, time travel backwards is theoretically impossible. However, I would only be marginally surprised if in about 2 or 3 hundred years that theory was broken. I know that if it does happen it won't for at least that amount of time, but we have re-defined our theories and facts so many times in human history. What is lost can always be found; what is destroyed can always be re-made.
Also, if you believe in the multiverse then one may speculate that it's possible that some universes may exist in a different time (past and future), and if we figure out how to link each universe together in a transportable chain then we could technically travel back in time because the multiverse is each person's different possiblities in life and different roles. You can't look back on life and wonder if you could have done something differently if you believe in the multiverse because you have demonstrated every possible (an infinate number) way of doing that scenario in multiverse jabble. I believe we could time travel this way and with faster than light theories. However, most people believe that faster than light travel is impossible for a human and that we couldnt handle the force and tremendous awesomeness of it all, but then again, theories are only meant to be changed or broken.

Idak you totally misunderstood what I said. Of course they've agreed on that theory. I'm saying that there is another theory specifying how to actually do it.

You should read Xenocide. It has something similar to what you're saying DaHc. Though it's a science fiction novel, and interesting read still the same.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
I thought backwards time travel was possible if you like got 2 blackholes and spun them around each other or some jazz like that. If that is the case then it probably is impossible since we don't have the ability to leave our own solar system, let alone manipulate 2 blackholes.

I'm just curious, and wondering for your opinions: if you travel forward in time, how would you get back to the time when you left?

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
MSW2006: You can't. Travelling forward in time basically means that time passes faster for everyone else than it does for you; the time that passes is still lost no matter how you go forward through it.

Doubt it. Scientists don't even know where Black Holes lead. So how could they be portals to another space, time dimension? Even so, what do you think could stand the ungodly amount of gravity? Nothing that man can come up with in a million years.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Existance is in the present. Time travel is impossible, because you can go anywhere but the prent. The past is gone, and the future is unwritten. What we do now decides what we do later, there would be an infinate number of possible alternate futures if the future was written. I dont belive it is.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Actually, some prominent scientists believe there may be an infinite number of universes; something alone the lines of every change in one universe creates new universes for every outcome, or something like that. But, it's impossible to prove, and is irrelevant to our existence.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Your right Falcon, we don't even know if they lead somewhere. You know what's scary though...
There's probably hundreds of thousands of black holes in our universe, who knows one couldn't possibly in our path?
Scientists can only tell if there is a black hole by light fracturing... invisible doom, I like that though.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Time travel IS possible, though it would require (a) immense amounts of energy only acheived by probing the Plank Length (b) reversal or acceleration of universal entropy(piece of cake) --or-- creation of a transversal wormhole via exotic matter...

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
this is kinda supplemental to what i just posted cuz im really bored... In the summer of 1985 a request (from the author of Contact)concerning time travel was sent to a serious physicist named Kip Thorne from Caltech. The request interested him so he and his colleagues worked backwards from a transversal wormwhole that would allow time travel while exerting less than 1 G and would be stable enough not to close up spontaneously and whose round trip would take days (not millions of years). They found (much to their suprise) that the solution was very simple and it stayed within all their rigid constraints... And according to the mathematics, the usual sci-fi time paradoxes dont exist. When going back in time, u actually FULFILL the past, rather than create time paradoxes or change the future. Im not sure what this actually means, but this is what their findings found(heh, kinda redundant). But it requires something known as exotic matter. This matter has not been observed at the time of this posting, but its properties do not seem to violate any of the known laws of physics. yea. so go out and find some exotic matter. and build a time machine. Then try telling me time travel is impossible!!!

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
If going back in time actually fulfills the past, then we have no free will. Something somehow determined that time travel would be created in the future, calculated all the effects of it, and had all those resolve in all points in time.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
if you ignore quantum theory then everything is planned out for you and we have no free will. I can't explain it well, but it's been posted on here before. Someone else'll probably know what i'm talking about and explain it.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Perhaps you could create a wormhole and keep one end of the wormhole on Earth and move the other end of the wormhole at or above the speed of light. Bring the end moving at the speed of light to a stop and it will be in the past. Walk through the wormhole and you have traveled backward in time.
Also, we have no clue what happens on the other side of the event horizon of a black hole. It could be that time starts moving backward. After all, time supposedly stops at the even horizon so is it such a stretch to assume it goes the other direction on the other side?

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
Forward travel is trivial. There is no past, there is only history, or memories. There can be no going back to what already has transpired, and is now only a memory.
Forward is the way time passes. Only the rate can be affected. If one travels very fast, as in at relativist speeds, it is proven (no longer just a theory)that time on board the craft will pass more slowly. One could travel 'round the galaxy at near light speed, seem to be gone only a year or so, but return to earth 1000 years later. You would have traveled nearly 1000 light years at on board apparent speeds of 1000X that of light! Actually time is passing 1000X slower, so you allowed 1000 hours for every hour you used to calculate your speed in miles per hour.
If the earth is not what you hoped for, sorry. No going back.
Also local time flow is affected by gravity, in a measurable way. This distortion is actually corrected for on very accurate aircraft inertial guidance systems.
There is also the deep freeze. If all your bodily functions were suspended for a period, you could 'wake up' years later, with no memory of time passing in between. Of course it is easy to see that there is no undoing suspended animation.
We jump in time every night. As I fall asleep, time will pass more quickly for me. If recovering from a particularity nasty weekend, I could wake up a day later at 6 O'clock, and not know if it is AM or PM. With this method of time travel, the body ages normally. A 10 year coma will have you waking in the future, but your body will

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
I read about a time travel experiment that actually proved you can travel forward through time. There was a clock on an airplane and a clock on the ground. After the plane flew around for a while, its clock was something like 0.0000000000147 seconds behind. So there ya go... Xenocide, dude. yeah. good book. And black holes don't lead anywhere. They're big globs of solid matter. You could go into one I guess. But you'd be mashed down to the size of a speck of dust. No, probably smaller than that. They say if you took out all the empty space between matter, you could fit the universe in two five-gallon buckets.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
I believe time travel is impossible. I was talking to my friend Vagla a while ago about time travel. He had his own beliefs about time travel and told me them.
What he said was that time measures the changes in the state of energy. So time is merely a measurement. It's not the 4th dimension or other crazy things people might think it is.
Let's say the state of energy right now is A. If we somehow end up in A again later on, everything that happened after A will occur again.
I'm going to use the big bang theory as an example. The state of energy before the ball of matter exploded is A. The explosion, and the unbelievably long eons of time after that is B. Another theory explains that the whole universe will eventually be scrunched down into a ball of matter again. Now we are back at A after the scrunching. Now whatever happened in B happens again, since B was already predefined.
Do you get what I mean? The universe in an endless loop, an infinity. Hell, I might have even existed one of the loops before. You all could've existed eons ago.
Does anybody know what I'm saying? Vagla is a very interesting person. He kept me thinking about this whole time travel thing over and over. So yea, tell me what you think.

Re: Is Time Travel Possible?
yeh they have done experiments back in the day. wat they did they timed two clocks to exactly the right time. they sent one into space and put it in orbit at the speed of light. when they got the clock back it was a few minutes slower then that of the one on the ground.
i have no idea if the one on the ground was sped up or it is actual fact i just read about it in a book.
