Re: Try to imagine nothing
not possible, because when you think about it, nothing is something and the only way to imagine nothing is to be dead. or maybe this is just the DXM talking...

Re: Try to imagine nothing
Impossible. Thought itself would be undone. Try this. Its so much cooler, clear your thoughts. Dont think about anything, dont image analyze read anything, just look at somethign, an image, a color, see it. See what you see and you saw what you saw. Dont remember it, just see it, refrain from thought and concentrate soley on the sensory input of seeing itself (or hearing or texture, although dont look at something with a word or listen to lyrics or anything that is directly associated with a thought)

Re: Try to imagine nothing
I do it every night to fall asleep. Breathe in time with your heartrate, relax every muscle in your body in sequence, and then just stop thinking. Do this enough and it becomes habit, you no longer have to think about doing it. Suddenly you've achieved your goal.

Re: Try to imagine nothing
When I go to sleep I need to think of things. Like naked ladies on space ships.
Question: I've never had trouble ceasing any cognition, for at least short periods of time, with will. Is this the case with those willing to answer me, and do you need these tricks to do it?
Just wonderin' if that crazy homeless guy was right about me.

The Buddhist ideal is to be able to see clear, as in the colour clear.
Random thought.

Re: Try to imagine nothing
Gee, Necro, that was positive, I think I'll do it more often.
I, like most other humans, find comfort in my belief that there is some sort of afterlife. I refuse to believe like some here on the board that I would be better than other people if I just stopped believing. I don't get why atheists think they are so great. They have nothing to look forward to and nothing but fear in their hearts on their deathbed.

Re: Try to imagine nothing
I've spoken to people that beleive that God is complete and total non-existance and everything in reality all at the same time. Alot of occult science I've studied concurrs. The whole point of Yoga (that I practice) is to bring the being to a state of union with its creator. This is done by a careful and methodical combination of mental and physical excercises. Amongst these is the withdrawal of the mind from thoughts of a worldly nature. The only thing other than here is not here. This is the goal of the Yogin. Casting off of the minds fog that is material reality, material desire. Once this has come to pass ones path to his Maker is lighted by the beaming Sun of enlightenment. This is all anyone needs. I would suggest breath control for starters. Then maybe some type of posturing. Moral and pyhsical.

Re: Try to imagine nothing
they know what happens scientifically during religious experiences; such as the meditation in eastern religions.
you have a part of your brain that distinguishes yourself from the rest of the world;
it basically tells you where your body ends and the world begins.
when this function is turned off; you feel a connection with everything around you; you feel like you are a part of everything.
and depending on religious beliefs; whatever you believe is the feeling achieved.
hindus feel a connection to their surroundings,
christians feel as if they're in the presence of god.
it also can be turned off while taking halucinogens such as acid.
they don't what causes random occurrences of this function turning off temporarily; as in a guy out taking a walk; or driving a car and say it could well be an actual religious experience.
if it was environmental you would not have one person out the hundreds nearby that it would only affect.

Re: Try to imagine nothing
Its a proven fact that the body has the ability to produce its own hallucinations. Its been the research of nueropharmacologists and physcologists like Timothy Leary and Aldous Huxley that have told us this. This research has related adrenlin to be a substance with a LSD-like function in large enough quantities. Adrenlin can only be "stockpiled" by conscious control of ones own mind and emotions. This is the reason behind religous people of the past having "visions". (from a scientist point of veiw) Once the soul has moved from the edge of the tornado into the eye it can see all the world whirling around it. Only then can one truly move his world. By being still.
