The Truth About the Necronomicon
I was going to post this under Things that Go Bump in the Night, but I thought it would be better to put it in a more visible place.
The Necronomicon is an ancient spellbook written by Ahmed Azif, the mad Arab, right? Sorta.
Lovecraft created the Necronomicon and its entire history for use in his writings. It comes from Greek: Necros=dead, nomos=law, eikon=image, Necronomicon= image of the law of the dead.
Several books titled Necronomicon have been printed, but they are all fabrications of an author trying to make money off of Lovecraft's reference to it. Anyone saying I'm wrong will be referred to webpages with extensive Lovecraft/Necronomicon info. Hope I could clear things up.

Re: The Truth About the Necronomicon
I always thought that the necronomicon was supposed to have been written by osiris, not some mad arab.

Re: The Truth About the Necronomicon
No, you're confusing it with the Egyptian Book of the Dead which is for real.

Re: The Truth About the Necronomicon
Necro = Dead Nom = Name Icon = Book
Book of dead names. That's what it means. So go ahead Z, make my black eyeliner run.
Oh yeah, and, it was written by the Mad Arab which is why it's intro is called Testimony of the Mad Arab.

Re: The Truth About the Necronomicon
<groans>
The Necronomicon was written by Azif, just like Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star. It's fictional.
As far as the entymology I gave, it may not be perfect but it is taken from a quote by Lovecraft.

Re: The Truth About the Necronomicon
Hehe, those movies were fucked up. That book had the same name. Because of its infamy it's just a really popular name for evil books.

Re: The Truth About the Necronomicon
Thanks for the support Unstable (like I didn't know what I was talking about You should definitely look through whatever copy you might buy. Anything called The Necronomicon really only serves novelty purposes (if you believe in the real power of spells, you won't find them in there). The first one published was 10 pages, each in a dead language, repeated over and over. Just find one that suits whatever you want to use it for.
