The Subconscious Mind
Well, I have been readign about this lately. I'm in a new unti of my Psuchology 20 course. We're learning about a little about the subconscious mind and subliminal messaging and so forth. Anywaze, I did a shiteload a research on subliminal images and messages. I found some funny shit that checked out. Subliminal images in Disney movies, which I find totally fucking hilarious (especially the big cocks on the castle in The little Mermaid). Then more about other advertisements (Liquor, Cigarettes, Makeup, and soon). Can you really be affected by hidden images and messages? I have alot of doubt thatthis is a possibility, although it is pointless to try denying that advertising companies go through great efforts to put these subliminal messages in place. Why is it that i find the same patterns though, Why must it ALWAZE be the word sex written on everything, is the word sex merely suggestive enuff to arouse my subconscious? cuz it sure as fuck isn't enough to attract the attention of my conscious side.
Anyhow, to the point of my post, I would like to ask veryone their opinion. What is it you believe about the subconscious mind? Do you believe Subliminal Messaging & control tactics actually work? Are our dreams a manifestation of what is running through our subconscious mind? Do we even have such an active subconscious? There are so many questions. Please expand in whtever way you wish.

Re: The Subconscious Mind
I had to write a song for school with subliminal messages. It was a song about abstinence with messages saying to smoke weed, have sex and kill the teacher.

Re: The Subconscious Mind
i believe its possible for the subconcious to be lead through subliminal messages, but i dont think the majority of the messages recieved are capable of actualy producing any measurable action such as the penis in the little mermaid or the word sex. it wont cause anything to happen and i doubt that your subconcious even recognizes those things for what they are ( i mean if my concious mind doesent notice the fact that a spire on the castle of the little mermaid looks like a penis i seriously doubt my subconcious would recognize it as such) the only measurable effect that ive seen is when the subject is hypnotized and given specific instructions as to what they were to do/say/feel/think. and as far as dreams go i dont think the subconcious has a lot to do with them, in my dreams (im a lucid dreamer most of the time) either i make things happen or rarely if i cant control whats about to happen things happen according to how i would logicaly expect them to happen kinda like predicting the most likely future outcome, even more rarely some extremely unlogical and unjpredictable things happen in my dreams im thinking that is the only role my subconcious plays in my dreams. of course im no scientist nor am i normal by any means so my opinion realy doesnt count for anything im sure that with some people the subconcious plays a large roll in their dreams i realy dont know. either way thats my opinion hope it helps

Re: The Subconscious Mind
i think advertiser use them for the sole purpose of triggering thoughts about their product somewhere else than watching television.
i don't think they can be used to control you though, i just think they leave reference points that when stimulated make us go "oh yeah!"

Re: The Subconscious Mind
Whenever im trying to find a solution to something and i have just given up, days later the solution just pops into my head. Im defiantly not aware of the process of obtaining the solution, but somehow the answer is realized. I say the subconcious is highly parallel and not logical. Our concious mind acts more like a computer, our subconcious mind it somewhat different. I feel we are able to interpret things that we are not aware of conciously. Even though the concious part of the brain isn't aware of this interpretation. Maybe there might be some connection between the concious and the sub-concious during dreams. They link together and the sub-concious dumps information to the concious, or vice versa. This might explain why our bodies need to be shut off while this is happening, otherwise we might react to the information as if it were reality.

Re: The Subconscious Mind
the unconscious mind is a very interesting concept . I think we could say it is our new metaphysical frontier , a kind of new found territory to explore .
Can subliminal messages work ? Possibly , like hypnotism if the person is lulled into a state or willinging open to suggestion then yes this may subtly influence people . However to be prone ( i hope ) , people have to have a particular receptive passive like nature ( sheep ) . We may all feel the ripples but do the ripples sway us ?
The ( unconscious ) mind and how it works is always good material to think upon ^^ when we * listen * to our thoughts what do we hear ? We * hear * thoughts ( and we may feel / sense etc on another level but thats another matter ) in our mother tongue . In our language , in our Abc's in our vowels etc also habits ( which are the result of decicions and reactions ) , attitudes and biases . There are alot of factors that design the tracks that the train/s of thought run upon .
the more we become aware of why we think the way we do the more we can break down the unconscious design and construct new , more efficient means of ( purer ) thought . I believe in much the same manner the unconscious is not so determined and constructed by these factors and so has a greater degree of clarity ( in it's own unique way ) . Anyone that is interested should invest some time into understanding methods to discern unconscious content , right now even though psychologists and neuro whatevers will tell you that everything is underwarpas , it aint true . We have only taken infintely small steps in this aspect of ourselves .
Here is a good exercise to understand yourself better . Helps demonstrate to yourself over time unconscious cogs turning and that once you become aware you are more enabled to choose how those cogs should turn ( if they should be cogs , if they should turn etc ) .
generally the idea is to ask your answers questions . The most simple that comes to my mind is why do you want money ( as in beyond practical needs ) ? For which a person will respond in a variety of ways , I'll use for material goods . So naturally the person will say because these material goods produce some form of happiness or result in some form of satisfaction . Now this may sound rather basic initially which would be consistent with the point . It is one of those questions you perpetually ask , and as you find your answers you realise there are deeper questions to your nature . Very simple and very effective , but be honest with yourself . One of the costs of knowledge is the truth sometimes can be unpleasant , if you start denying aspects of your true self / existence then i think something called neurosis ensures . The flip side here is Im not preaching you accept your demons simply name them ( which means become aware of them ) .
I understand dreams play a big role here but I dont have a thorough understanding , they most certainly are deep for examples that individuals or anything can generally embody other concepts then prevcisely what the image would literally convey . It is very complex and quite vast but when we sleep yes we lose a more accute reality based consciousness ( self existence ) and tend to be absolved in our knowledge and awareness .
Someone has probbaly heard about the recent testing that has been going on between dreams and what part of the brain is used ( they used tetris ) , well this demonstrates how the mind defines relevant data when it comes to dreams . This kind of knowledge is incredibly useful for us to understand ourselves better . Though we must acknowledge that we have always exploited anything we could to other aims that are not ideal and usually quite unfortunate .

Re: The Subconscious Mind
i read an interesting book on dreams, where the author stated that we should treat dreams as real occurences in life, because all 5 of our senses are active during the dream state and relay information that could never be in "reality". interesting theory, she also states that dreams are a preparation for death, once we can achieve dream "perfection"(out of body experiences, meeting people while they are dreaming, interdimensional travelling, etc..)
somehow though i just don't buy it being reality, i have no responsibilities in dreams, and the ones i do have responsibilities in are usually terrifying because i'm not living up to my end of the deal.
if it is reality, i went to school a lot times in my underwear, but on the goodside i've had a lot of one night stands as well.

Re: The Subconscious Mind
I agree with the author of the book that lostmind mentioned...
We can communicate subconsciously, some moreso than others. Sharing of the suconscious and conscious may be one of the elements of developing e.s.p.
I share these states when I am conscious and late at night I am dreaming while fully conscious and posting to this board for example. Some people I am connecting with are dreaming, they seem to be in a more delicate frame of mind, so I have to be gentle so as not to lose this connection, whereas with psychics who have disciplined this form of communication (it is ethereal) but I don't have to be too concerned about ethereal etiquete, I can be a radical s.o.b. if I want.
Subliminal messaging can certainly work and it does work if those creating it have the ability. The use of subliminal messaging such as in advertizing is in my opinion at a primitive level. (you didn't mention Joe Camel)
I have observed it work as far back as 1968 on a person who was on LSD, and it could easily be shown to work in that scenario, although I would condemn such experimentation because of the motives. I don't think anyone should be a lab rat for some stupid jerks trying to learn about the brain.
Actually, this area ('Psychology'in general) and it's written/recorded knowlege and so-called 'research' is well below the levels of the minds they are trying to learn about. It is really primitive, and I actually find it offensive. People do share with others in their dreams, so it is part of life, or however the author described it in lost mind's post.
3:53 a.m. and I am tired, and going offline.
Sweet Dreams,
