Default Morally right to drink your parent's alcohol?

My friend and I are having a conversation about drinking your parent's booze. Underage kid in question, open access to parent's alcohol. Parents are aware that the kid in question drinks.
His argument is that it's no different than eating the food your parents buy. My contention is that the fact that it's illegal would make a difference in how they feel about it.
Either way I don't think the parent's care, but what's your take on the moral decision?

i think they would care cuz it cost more than food plus hes underage and what sort of "Good" parent would let there child drink even if they no they drink they will probably not want there child to drink

Maybe if you're not completely obvious about it. You know, snaggin' a whole bottle or draining it.

I never had to though, even at 15-16 I had friends that I skated with that were 21. When I come visit my parents such as I am now, I load up on booze at the liquor stores because it's SOOOO much cheaper here than in chicago. I'll usually drink my dads beer though. Sometimes he'll make me go buy a new case, sometimes he won't bitch.

treat it as though it were your parents cash. if it were given, then take. otherwise, the morality is the same

I agree, Obsidian, but I'm gonna let it go because I'm interested in the responses.

Personally, my folks flat out didn't want me drinking when I was younger. Not really sure why, but when they found out I swiped a bottle of rum to go and get drunk with, they were pissed. The legality of consumption had very little to do with it, they were just pissed I was drinking.

Funnily enough, I got pretty trashed with my mom on Christmas Eve, and we had a good laugh about me swiping the rum when I was 15.

I thought it was legal for underaged kids to drink in the privacy of their own homes (instead of in public)?

Anyway, I think it really depends on the views and/or attitudes of parents involved. Some people take the laws very seriously, and in this case yes it would be wrong to take drinks from them, because in so doing you are putting them in a morally, if not legally compromised position. Whereas other people consider the drinking age law to be quite silly and in this case it would be ok to drink their alcohol, because they don't care.

It all depends, is it morally right? Yes, but the same with anyone else, you never take the last beer, or drink last liquor or anything of that nature, also don't take to much, and if they have a problem with you drinking try not to get caught doing it. The most important rule though is if your parents leave you at home say they go on vacation, but they do NOT hide the liqour and just leave it on the counter its completly fair game, just like house sitting rules, anything hidden is off limits but out and open is cool. One last thing I can think of is if its brand new bottle or obviously something very expensive and they themselves save it for special occasions leave it alone.

I didn't start really drinking until I was a senior and at that time I was living somewhat on my own(House my mom was going to turn into an office complicated story), and could get it from older people I knew. When I joined army my family really didn't care that I drank or would have drinks with them and mom never really bitched if Id take a little liqour or beer home from her house, because she figures if im old enough to serve my country I should be allowed to have a few drinks as long as I was responsible and not driving and such.

Yes, you eat their food, but food is a necessity. It is their duty as you're parents to provide you with food/shelter/clothes etc. It is not their duty as you're parents to get you loaded. You're a big boy, your recreational needs are your own responsibility.

Don't get me wrong I used to steal booze from my parents all the time. I'm just saying when it comes to moral justification, there's really not much there. If you really felt you were doing nothing wrong, you would ask your parents if you could take the bottle.

My mom knows I drink, but I don't think she'd appreciate me guzzling back her small alcohol collection to get wasted.

If I'm drinking more for the taste (adding some whiskey to eggnog or something) she doesn't give a shit.

Think of it like, if your mom bought a nice box of chocolates, and said you could have some, and you sat down and ate the whole box. Technically you aren't in the wrong because she said you could have as many as you want, but it's still fucking rude of you to do.

Default Re: Morally right to drink your parent's alcohol?

thats really pathetic logic. lets see if i can follow it:
parents know kid drinks
parents buy alcohol for themselves
parents make no obvious attempt to hide alcohol

so therefore it is completely right to steal it?
the parents probably don't hide thier car keys or wallets either, and they must know the kid spends money occasionally...

if something is not freely given, it is not ok to take. just because it's not in a safe under the floor doesn't mean they want you to have it. some parents don't mind supplying their kid a few drinks, because they can monitor its intake and keep track. but that doesn't mean you just swipe it.

i have alcohol in my beer fridge and also many spirits in a cupboard, nothing hidden. i would not be happy if someone started swiping shit just because they had trouble getting thier own.

As far as I understand the legality of it, it is actually illegal to drink, but if you stay at home with your parents or something there is a zero percent chance of getting caught, because if the cops came to the door the adults would just say it was only them. If you leave the house though, then do something dumb and get caught, the parents can get in trouble for supplying a minor with alcohol.

my dad used to get pissed when i stole his rum. i figured out why pretty quick, when he started making me buy it back..

to tell you the truth, asking goes along way. try it, see how it works, and be honest...

although these days i find it my moral duty to lighten the alcohol load around my mother in order to prevent her from getting too drunk, because she's a sloppy drunk and likes to drink too much. hard to empty the reserves when without others also tapping the lines too, if you catch my drift..

I guess this isn't about the correlation between alcohol, and fine foods. Alas, just some underage prick who can't find any other ways, or anything else to do. Oh well, it makes jacking off to Facebook better.

If they know about it and don't care of course. As long as you drink it responsibly.

In Ontario is legal for parents to give their own children of any age alcohol in their own home.

it's not morally right but who gives a shit. it's up there with "speeding" on the evil list.

my parents dont keep alot of alcohol, they just buy beer like once a week and i take like two to supplement a marijuana high..

there's not really alot to steal, i usually take the last few so they don't care, they couldn't of done anything with them.

if they kept liquor in the house though i'd be takin shots like Kennedy.

I used to do that all the time...my dad knew it and he did not really care...just would say "ya know if you want to drink our booze you know we dont care but just ask its the nice thing to do and I am not going to say no." A lot of times though he never knew I did but sometimes he did and would just ask me to ask lol
