| Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Modern Warfare 2 was officially announced by InfinityWard a few weeks ago, but I didn't see anything on here, so I might as well start something now. Shall this be the "official" thread, then? I'd request a sticky, but that's negligible.
Anyways, I got COD5 for Christmas, and I found it's the same goddamn thing as COD4, in terms of the campaign. Every level plays out like Killzone. They're all: take cover, kill enemies behind cover, run forward to take cover, kill enemies behind cover, repeat. Every fucking level, except for the rail-gun one. So if Modern Warfare 2 needs to do anything, they have to add more variety to the campaign. More special "moments" in the campaign, such as the sniping missions, the rail-gun missions,
And the nuclear explosion in COD4. That nuke was cool. Also, it'd be nice to see some more weapons, as well as returning weapons balanced out (i.e. the bullshit M16 and M40A3). Weapons like the L96A1, FN SCAR, the AUG, etc.
What do you want to see in MW2?

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Codwaw campaign is so mediocre it sucks. The multiplayer is great though! With the exception of Dome and that Courtyard map, the maps are better than Infinity Ward's in cod4.
Codmw2 needs to have really great maps, and maybe this time around NOT release a mappack. The maps in cod4's map pack sucked, and it only accomplished fragmenting the community and helping me put the disc back in the case.

I can't stand CS.
Better FPS's then COD though?
Off the top of my head:
Half-Life
Half-life 2
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead
Unreal Tournament 2004
BioShock
F.E.A.R.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Quake 3
The list could go on, just about any FPS is better than CoD, hell, I'd rather play Halo and that game is mediocre as hell. Honestly, you've played one CoD, you've played them all. They're just lameass shooting galleries with infinitely spawning bad guys and shit AI. The way they play, they should be called Disney's Call of Duty Adventure if you ask me. I tried to play CoD4 after everyone raved about it, and it was the same shit as the original, right down to the enemies that would line up to get shot. Shoot one guy, watch as the next moves up and stands in the exact same spot, shoot him, watch the next guy in line do the same damn thing. On more than one occasion I watched that happen more than 5 times in a row. That's just fucking sad.

Phat! Didn't like COD5 (my brother has got it), but thought COD4 was one of the greatest single player experiences I've had for a long while. I played the campaign through about twenty times.
The multiplayer was awesome too; it's a great game to play split screen.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
COD is for pussies, the game is so fucking easy that its not even fun.
I played COD4 for about 2 months before it just became lame. I guess I could say I played CODwaw for 2 months too because they are the same fucking game. In fact I also feel pretty safe saying I played COD5 for 2 months because it also will most likely be the same.
Anyway I played CS for about 5 years, starting right around when 1.5 came out. Before that I had never played a game that was such a challenge. CS requires years of playing in order to become a consistent top player. The depth of skill is very deep, an a huge amount of factors go into making the right choices at the right times.
With COD it took about a month of playing a few hours a week to become a consistent top player. A K/D of 5:1 was all to common for me, and many others I would see. I had all the maps down to a science, fool proof plans that raped every time. My gun/perk layout was unbeatable when used properly. It was these things that just made the game boring. I felt like I had 'beat' the multiplayer of COD, I feeling I never got even after 5 years of CS.
There are 2 people I know who are COD diehards. One of them has never played any video game before COD4, and refuses to play any other video game then COD(x). He still sucks at it even though he has been playing for months now, and it is clearly because he doesn't understand how to play an FPS properly (choosing your battles, keeping cover, strafing, flash/stun/smoke nades, not camping, burst firing, playing based on your weapon's strengths, etc etc). He still plays though because of how retardedly easy it is to kill people, and because there are virtually no repercussions for dying.
The other has played COD since it first came out, and really has never given any other FPS a chance, probably because he is not used to getting his ass kicked so easily.

Get rid of the fucking stupid ass leveling system and bring back the class system of 2 or 3.
Other than that, fucking take away Treyarch's rights to make anymore CoD games. I was really excited about WaW because I loved 2 and kind of liked 3, and wanted to go back to WW2.
How the fuck do you fuck a game up that bad? I still find it amusing how 4 has better graphics than 5 (similiar to how 2 looked better than 3).
Fuck you, Treyarch. 3's online play was pretty good but you fucked this one up. The whole leveling system with perks and shit is severely broken in the WW2 setting, congratulations on making bolt action rifles fucking useless. Taking two direct hits with a bolt rifle to drop someone with the Juggernaut perk is overkill, removes the whole purpose of those guns. In most situations you'll only get one shot anyways, the whole point of them in past games was to make that one shot count. I love getting killed while using my favorite guns from past games just because my direct fucking hit didn't do shit and the enemy managed to close in on me and kill me while I was working the bolt for a second shot. The guns will kill with one shot on hardcore, but then again so will the other guns that can get off more shots easier.
I would like to see IW make one last WW2 game, then I'd be happy with this modern bullshit.
Also, GET RID OF THE FUCKING LEVELING/PERK SYSTEM. IT'S FUCKING RETARDED. IF I WANTED TO LEVEL UP TO GET ACCESS TO NEW ABILITIES AND WEAPONS, I'D GO PLAY A FUCKING MMO. LEVELING UP IN AN FPS IS THE MOST RETARDED FUCKING THING EVER.

I was invited to the beta testing and didn't care for it to be honest, the multiplayer was just pretty much COD4 but with new maps and WWII weapons, not bad, but nothing new.

Yeah, for it's time the original was pretty damn decent. It still had all the flaws, but the sense of scale and spectacle was unparalleled at the time, so it was a lot easier to look past them.
Now, after 5 games and an expansion pack that all stuck to the same formula, all with the same braindead enemies who line up to get shot and extremely linear gameplay, it's become really tiresome and annoying.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
IW will fuck up online play again anyway due to having about 10 staff members, all with severe down syndrome and epilpesy.
The game should be split into section, ie. 5 sniper missions making up a campaign, 5 building storming missions, 5 more objective based outdoors missions (jungle etc.) and possibly a more simplistic survival campaign series where you have to hold an objective against various waves for a certain period of time.
Completing the single player campaigns (or at least the first 3 missions) should unlock the relevant class in multiplayer.
Perks should be more strategic, such as improved camo rather than more grenades but I really liked the levelling system and felt that the weapon tiering in WaW was its best feature (with the exception of the almighty STG, the starting weapons are just as decent as the rest).
There should be no lasers.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Honestly, CoD isn't in anywhere near close to the same league as BioShock. You really can't even argue against the fact that BioShock has better graphics, better art direction, a better story, and better music, but when it comes to gameplay it just depends on whether you prefer highly scripted chicken shoots with infinitely spawning enemies that all look the same and line-up to get shot, or if you prefer battling in a living ecosystem using a mix of guns and magic, with emergent enemy behavior and a wide variety of ways to tackle any given situation.
Of course, that's speaking purely in terms of singleplayer. If you want multiplayer, obviously CoD wins by default, but the BioShock singleplayer campaign is miles ahead of the garbage that is any CoD's SP.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
I would like to see them keep the same leveling system and gun attachment system that they had in COD4 but instead of every player having a set perks/ attachments they are able to choose from a large pool of perks pertaining to their level, like wise with the weapons, but in the end you are only able to have a set number of perks or attachments making the came more individualized for each player. I would also like to see the ability to select different skins when you are playing on a certain side ( this would not be done in game), better bullet detection, MAP EDITOR, and the ability to select different weapons as you level up instead of everyone getting the same weapon when they hit a level. COD:4 is the only game in the series I can tolerate, and its online game play is pretty addictive.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
...battling in a living ecosystem using a mix of guns and magic, with emergent enemy behavior and a wide variety of ways to tackle any given situation.
That's a neat way to spin "dark, boring hallways filled with three kinds of enemies". The "variety of ways to tackle any given situation" is a terrible line to use.
You can use your magic bees, you can shoot them with your shitty guns using horrible gunplay mechanics, or you can electrocute them by shooting the puddle with your magic lightning hand. Oh, and sometimes you can play that awful pipes minigame and convince those annoying robots to fight them for you.
Our different takes on this line just show that we have different tastes in games. You like to feel smart for realizing you can shoot a puddle to electrocute some bad guys, and I find that same incentive from the developers to be an affront to my intelligence. Everything about Bioshock offends me -- from the awful story to the "art".

As opposed to "extremely linear pathways filled with one kind of enemy".

I'm not saying BioShock is extremely open-ended, but at least you get a modicum of say in how you tackle any given situation. You can use guns, magic, traps, decoys, and even confuse any of the enemies, from the Big Daddy, to the Splicers, to yes, the robots, and get them to fight on your side. In Call of Duty you get the couple weapons they give you (usually only one of which is any good), and you're herded along a tiny little rat maze with only one way to go, while shooting infinitely spawning bad guys who literally line up to get shot.
In BioShock I was able to make plans to attack the enemies. One of my favorites was taking down the Big Daddies. I'd set up four or five electrified tripwires with my boltgun, then I'd hide a couple mines around the corner. When that was done I'd wait for him to walk by, enrage him, then he'd charged through my tripwires, getting a nice jolt each time, and finally end up slamming into my cluster of mines. After that all it would take was a couple hits from my rocket launcher and some incendiary shotgun shells to the face to finish him off.
An equivalent scenario in Call of Duty would be "I'm going to use my Sniper Rifle instead of my Assault Rifle this time, lulz". That's all the choice you've got. Of course, choice isn't the be all end all, I can appreciate a linear game if it's good, Call of Duty just isn't. The AI is fucking moronic, and in an FPS like Call of Duty, which is hinged entirely on the combat, that's pretty much the nail in the coffin.

I don't see how you can say gameplay design like "hit puddle with electricity, kill enemy" is an affront to your intelligence, when you're defending a game where five enemies back to back will step up and get shot in the exact same spot within a span of twenty seconds.

If this gives you a sense of accomplishment, then I'm happy for you. I wish I could be as easily amused.

Nah, I actually prefer shooting enemies who line up to die like they're at the DMV.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
I didn't like any of the other COD games, other than the 4th.
Yeah, it's linear, but the A.I. isn't bad; at least is wasn't when I played it through.
What makes COD4 so great is that, firstly, it looks incredible; secondly, it feels like you're caught up in the midst of a critical global struggle, complete with military intrigue and devilishly volatile terrorists hell-bent on ruining the West; and thirdly, the characters - especially the S.A.S. - are realistically brutal and voiced to perfection.
The part when Jackson (US Marine) is caught up in a nuclear blast while attempting to rescue a downed pilot is simply mind-blowing. It was as cinematic as it gets in gaming.
Sure, you can argue that COD is just a shooting gallery, and for the most part it is, but COD4 took a tried and tested formula, and then gave it a fantastically compelling storyline in a new setting. It breathed new life into an old medium.
It's not for everybody, but it's certainly head and shoulders above the rest of the series.
I fucking enjoyed it over and over again. I welcome a new Modern Warfare!

could a point system work? Like each level gets you a set amount of points. And, in order to get perks, guns, etc. you need to have that many points. So, a noob could get an STG quickly, but it wouldn't have any perks or modifications to go along with it unless he gets more. So you'd have to decide between a kickass gun and an average one with better perks/setup.
Could be cool; little more stategy in selecting your setup.
Oh, and a quick question: does the bullet damage increase perk offset juggernaught? Like, if I have a bolt action with the +dmg perk, would it still kill in one hit?

Yes, I believe a shot from a bolt action with Stopping Power will one hit kill a Juggernaut, but only if it would have one hit killed without Stopping Power and Juggernaut (scoped torso, neck, or head). Without a scope on the weapon, the only one hit kills are to the head at 37.5 meters or closer. The PTRS-41 will one hit to torso, neck, or head.
*but it seems like with Juggernaut, irrespective of Stopping Power, the only one hits are to the head -- so I dunno.

I didn't like Bioshock at all, but its better than COD. The Call of Duty games are just so standard and generic that, to me, its extremely boring. It feels like I've played the game a 100 times before, and I have.

Oh and it would be sweet if you could call in tanks like a chopper strike, you can't use them, they just come in, fuck shit up for 30 seconds, and then go.
