The laughing Jesus
had cords of steel cable instead of muscles
and the balance of a cat.
The laughing Jesus
saw best in darkness, thought best when closest to evil
repented only his craving for mercy.
The laughing Jesus
drove a pitch-black '73 Monte Carlo to the edge of the desert
where it falls off into fire.
He relaxed at the edge
took off his shirt and got a tan
clear down to the bones.
The laughing Jesus
cried every morning when he brushed his teeth.
he cried shooting pool
he cried when the streetlights clicked on.
The laughing Jesus
dazed by humanity
grew fangs and ran away to hell
he pickled his brain in poisons
and had sex with the news
he tortured beauty till it sang
and lived in the sewers.
The laughing Jesus
never really got a clean break
they wanted to sign him up
they wanted to make him the main attraction
they wanted to merchandise a line of hearts
that broke exactly like his did.
He had other plans.
To the laughing Jesus
warfare was like a carnival ride
the laughing Jesus
didn't do parting the seas
or wine tastings
or heaven.
the laughing Jesus
wrote the Book of Love in blood
the laughing Jesus
was with it till the wheels came off.
