Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

Default What are they saying?

Hi?

This might be a slightly weird topic but I have always wanted to find out what the units in Starcraft are saying/what it means etc.

1. Terran dropship: "In the pipe, five by five". What does this mean?
2. Terran Valkyrie: "Diavoid" (or some such), and "dont give me gratings", which I suspect to be "greetings" but not sure. What is she really saying?
2. Terran marine, upon firing: "SAAAH, that's the stuff". Did they really say "Saaah"? If yes, is it supposed to be a real word/do Americans actually say this in real life?

" "Five by five" by extension has come to mean "I understand you perfectly" in situations other than radio communication, the way Loud and Clear entered slang, post-World War II. A further shortened form is "five by"." - Wikpedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_by_five)

This is actually just an easter egg from Alien, which shares a lot of similarities with Starcraft.

In the Pipe usually means "in the clear" or "safe".

As for the SAHHHH part, if you're talking about StimPacks, I believe it's a sigh of relief

As for the Valkyrie, she speaks in mixed German/English, so I'm not exactly sure what you heard, but you can surf through this (http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/StarCraft_unit_quotations#Valkyrie)and check

I've been fucking waiting for SC2, and I've intentionally ignored the stories and hype. I want to be surprised, good or bad, because the first one was amazing fantastic shit, and as long as I hold how, i can make the second be amazing fantastic shit too.

But its supposed to be awesome. So fuck off and who cares

Yeah I thought that was pretty neat.

Shame she got bit by an alien though, she was my favourite. Then Vasquez. Then that ugly Ripley bitch. And Newt should've been eaten.
