The pros of being Canadian
I know this is a repost from SG, but it did not get moved and thus, I did not get any response. Anyways...
Recently some drunk people have told me about how great being Canadian is. Furthermore, they've informed me that Canadians are loved in Europe and that an accent can score you free brew in the UK. Is it true? I don't want to sound like an idiot, but a really don't know. I'm aware that it's not like I'm going to be followed by a crowd of people asking to be shit on, but are we really that well liked overseas? If you're from the UK, would you buy a brew for Canadian? I'm going there in March so I need to know.

You'll be marginally more liked than an american. Just tell em tales of how you'd ride down to the pub on your ski-doo to buy a two-four with loonies, dodging mooses while wearing your rubbers. No doot aboot it eh?

Re: The pros of being Canadian
Most Europeans can't tell the difference between a Canadian and an American, as such, you'll be treated the same. But if you tell them, there might be a small difference in how they threat you. But I've never really heard anybody saying that they love Canadians specifically.

Re: The pros of being Canadian
When I'm in Europe everyone assumes I'm an American, though I try to add a very slight British inflection and use "eh" more than usual to give them a hint without directly saying "I'm not American, you don't have to hate me." Really, unless you have a Newfie or native accent, people aren't going to automatically assume you're Canadian. Canadians aren't really treated much differently at all. This used to be different, apparently, my old boss told me the Dutch treated him like a god just for being Canadian. That was in the '70s, though, I suppose that generation still had WWII on the mind.
Canadians seem to be quickly losing their great international reputation :(.

My Grandpa (a WW2 vet) went to Holland in the late 60s. He was bought many beers in the pub because he was Canadian, and would have got tons of pussy was well had the Grandma not been around.
Now what does a Canadian accent sound like to a European?

An American accent. Except if you're from or near Quebec or the maritimes, and even then... believe me, you'll have to explain that you're not American every time you meet someone. At least, they'll know you're not from the south.

So what if he bought many beers? :p, anybody can buy many beers here... And tons of pussy? That just depends on how good looking you are, European, Canadian or American.
As Static said, most Europeans won't know the difference between a Canadian and an American just by listening.

I've actually experienced the Holland bit personally, of course I was with my elderly War Veteran G-Grandfather visiting war memorials and such, but we got invited to a handful of dinners by local residents(all older people as well).

Everyone hates the US because we get in wars all the time and blow all our tax dollars away on stupid crap, but Canada doesn't do anything. They just chill on top of America and live life hassle free. Sure, we get ourselves into stupid wars and argue over everything and everyone else in the world hates us, but at least we're not pussies.

I wouldn't say that Canada doesn't do anything, we have peace keepers in the Middle East alongside US and other UN soldiers. I don`t understand what you want Canada to do... start blowing stuff up to make us look important?

That's such an ignorant and childish thing to write. Whenever I hear someone call Canadians "pussies" I know I'm talking to an idiot. It's really very simple: we're a smaller (population-wise) and younger nation. Obviously, we're not going to be fighting a bunch of large-scale wars every few years like our oh-so-heroic neighbours to the south, and of course we don't yield nearly as much global power. So what? Living in a country most people don't hate really has its benefits. So... if living in a peaceful and prosperous nation makes you a pussy, then I suppose I'd be happy to be a pussy.
A note: we're helping fight your fucking war right now, so fuck off with this "pussy" bullshit.
Hm... I think this got a little off track :D.

I was in the UK for many years and people mistook me for being Irish or American and I am Canadian.
It got me some tail and thats about it. I think it may have made me sound older because all the local teens were getting me to buy booze for them, I was only 16 and was able to buy the booze.

Canada isn't peaceful. They can't fight wars because they are too busy hating each other (Provinces). You see, Canadians are so shitty, they even hate each other!

Admittedly, our government is currently full of a bunch of septuagenarian children and they have been arguing as such. As Canadian citizen this has been an embarrassment on one of the highest levels I have ever felt, even more embarrassing than farting in a crowded elevator (and not nearly as funny). We do not hate each other, just our government. I have no problem with Quebecers, I chat with the CN Rail workers out of Montreal regularly and they are some of the coolest guys I've met.
I'm assuming by the post that you're American, so don't be so quick to talk: http://www.godhatesamerica.com/

Re: The pros of being Canadian
I was using some sarcasm in my previous statement, but still, Canada is too docile. How do we know what you've got packing until you blow up a few Asian countries? It's not normal to be that peaceful; you're the country that we haven't seen something out of in so long that we're beginning to wonder if you're planning something big, like a surprise attack to reclaim all of US as one giant Canadian province.

I'd imagine the British Columbian accent would be less likely to be confused for that of an American, particularly among the British -- the province was settled by a much higher concentration of English (most of the other provinces were settled by large majorities of Scotch or Irish or French, of course. Compared to Germans as the largest US ethnic group) and it makes the accent sound somewhat different as a result. I have been told by Europeans though that Canadians sound vaguely Scotch-Irish with a dash of American thrown in.
I was using some sarcasm in my previous statement, but still, Canada is too docile. How do we know what you've got packing until you blow up a few Asian countries? Granted you're kidding around but we wouldn't be reclaiming the US because we never held it, though we did once hold a portion of the northern third of the country along with New Caledonia (Oregon-Washington), that was ceded by treaty. And Canada already invaded and attacked the United States in 1812; the Canadian Militia (contrary to what some Americans think, the Militia consisted mostly of what would become Canadian citizens, not British soldiers) took a number of towns and set fire to the White House. Besides, you might get your wish: we have a jack-booted cocksucker as a Prime Minister, he'll probably have us attack something sooner than later. He's already got the poor and misplacedly patriotic over in Afghanistan dying in droves; the poor sods. Et dominus flevit.

Re: The pros of being Canadian
You know what's great about being Canadian?
We don't HAVE an identity. Our way of live isn't really something that can be defined. We are all just a consciousness, and when you're here, you can feel it.
Other countries define themselves based on something, we don't. We are inclusive, and there's just something in the air that is very accepting and very peaceful, and is great to be a part of.

Hm... I think this got a little off track :D.
I find it nothing more nerve grating than someone who uses a stereotypical, general "insult" about a country - in order to harass an individual from that country. Pathetic.
I'm American. I've been to Canada several times. I thought the places I visited were gorgeous. I met a lot of really nice, genuine people in Canada - and a lot of assholes. Just like anywhere else.
I find it very shallow and childish to dislike a person/treat them rudely JUST BECAUSE they come from a country you don't like. That's abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous.
When I talk to people who are visiting America from other countries, I always try to treat them with the utmost respect and care that they deserve. The kind that I hope I'd be treated with elsewhere - and the kind that perhaps - would change that particular person's shallow, ill informed, childish view of Americans.

" . . . Canada is not a country, but a collection of outposts . . . " - Ferguson.
That is one of the best descriptions I've seen; it builds upon the garrison concepts of good Mr. Northrop and makes them slightly more accessible for most people.
I should go get a degree in Canadian Identity.
