Games People Play Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

At first I thought, "didn't my copy of Half-life 2 come with something like this?" In fact it did, but mostly all valve did themselves was make the water look good, and the physics.

Bravo to the team that worked on this.

Same.

I've been following this for years, since HL2 first came out. They're taking forever, but it looks amazing so far.

I love the fact that they're completely rebuilding the maps from the ground up. They're doing all their own models, skins, music...this is a huge undertaking for a mod group.

Ambitious, but I think it'll be worth the wait.

I really don't understand why people hated Xen.

The jumping wasn't difficult at all. The only hard part was when you needed to jump on that flying manta ray thing. Fighting the mother headcrab was easy if you did it right, and the final boss took a long time but it wasn't hard.

Did you beat Decay? ;)

I didn't even realize that a significant amount of people hated Xen. Jumping on the bombers was tough, but not overly hard if you knew what you were doing.

Why? You blast her and when she takes enough damage she runs away to the next stage of the fight. Eventually you end up in that pit with her and you just blast a few rockets up her tailpipe. Just ignore the transparent headcrabs.

You're stupid. The strategy on easy and hard is the same. Hard just takes more ammo and more time. If you don't let her toxic spit thing hit you, which is really easy to avoid, then you shouldn't be dying. When she charges you, strafe and shoot her sack. When she runs, save your ammo and follow her. Shooting her when she's running away from you does fuck all as far as I know because it's basically part of an in-game transition.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Xen is so damn hard. At least Xen had some interesting enemies. Like those flying things that shoot fireballs at you. The mini versoins of the final boos. They at least put some challenge in the game.

Also, the final boss of Half Life was trippy as hell. I love that battle. It's what made the game so awesome. Running up to his lair had this awesomely eery feel to it. And then seeing a giant ass baby with a forehead the size of a football field made it perfect.

Its true... a controller and a shooter just don't mix.

They even recognized this way back with the NES... they had to design a light gun because using a controller to shoot sucks. They knew this back in 1990.

Now, if they replaced the right joystick with a trackball, then we might be on-to something.

Left hand moves, jumps, crouches,

right hand shoots, throws grenades, brings the sights up. With a trackball, you'd be able to aim much faster and much more accurately...

With a stick, I find myself circling the target... zeroing it in... and if you touch the stick just slightly too hard you over-shoot your target and get raped. Its exactly why laptops no longer use that little nub in the middle of the keyboard to control the mouse.

Dual analog controls have improved. COD4 on the X360 seems much tighter to me than something like Timesplitters on the PS2.

Part of the problem was getting used to doing precise movements with the right thumb, I think. The left thumb had been on the d-pad for years, but now the right thumb was asked to move beyond mere button-mashing. Turok, for instance, kept precision aiming on the left and simpler movement functions on the right. Modern dual analog controls generally do the opposite. I've also had to train myself to play without an inverted y-axis, as old flight sims and FPS games defaulted to this, yet many modern games don't.

It's all very strange.

Yeah, I'm 100% used to using inverted sticks for 3d games... 2d games need to be normal.

I'm not saying that FPS are unplayable or even not enjoyable using sticks... its just that if you're SERIOUS about your FPS, you just KNOW that mouse and keyboard is the way to go. There is no substitute.

Sticks are perfect for racing, sports, adventure games like oblivion, and anything that doesn't require precision on a constant basis. Sticks are great for moving your character around... not for moving the camera around.

I used to say shit like that years ago. Basically it's a load of crap though. Dual Analog works fine. It's an adjustment from the mouse and keyboard, obviously, but even though the gameplay changes, you can still do the exact same shit you do with keyboard+mouse. Don't be a player hater. :o

Hard settings? In Half-Life? Dude, that's got to be the easiest "hard" setting ever. Half-Life "hard" is easier than most games' normal. Great game, but easy as hell.

But if you really want to prove how awesome you are with a controller, I'll play you in any PC FPS I own that supports dual analog controls. I'll play you one round with a mouse and keyboard and stomp you into the ground, then I'll play you with a controller and undoubtedly beat you again.

What the fuck are you going on about there? What do you mean with serious? Man, I remember people back in the day playing counter-strike with only the keyboard and they still owned it up.

What I'm going on about is this... show me a fucking device that is as accurate, fast, and easy to use as a mouse for aiming a gun in a FPS. Set up a LAN game with a friend, have him use a keyboard and mouse, you plug in a controller and set that up to play. Then play 100 games... how many did you win? I'd guess somewhere around 0... or 1 if you're lucky.

Or for your most recent arguement.... use just the keyboard against his keyboard and mouse. 100 games. You'd win roughly 0.

Theres even a difference in mice... match two people up... one has a ball mouse, and one has a modern dual-laser mouse. Lets see just how accurate the ball mouse is compared to the laser mouse.

Theres no way you can do an instinctive jerk-and-fire with a stick... with a stick you're FORCED to turn only at a certain max rate of rotation.... no matter how hard you hit the stick, you only turn so fast.

Also with a mouse you can get accurate on a pixel-by-pixel basis... I can move my mouse exactly one pixel with minimal effort. Now if I tried to do that with a stick, I'd move 3 pixels... or 5... whatever the stick is pre-programmed to move... in set increments. A mouse offers COMPLETE CONTROL of your aiming device, and is ONLY LIMITED BY YOUR SKILL AT MOVING THE MOUSE!

I'll play you 1000 games with my keyboard and mouse, and you can hook up a controller and play with that... I'll stomp your ass all 1000 times.... guaranteed.

Anyone that disagrees just doesn't understand simple physics.

UT3 is not cross console. It was going to be, but then they canned it.

The only recent cross platform multiplayer FPS I can think of is Shadow-Run, and it's not very good. It also hobbled the PC users controls and gave the console users auto-aim to make things fair.

No, I don't even really like it. Reeks of poor console portage, and in many ways it's a downgrade from UT2004. I won it playing 1v1 in the demo (a signed copy no less), I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.

I have 9 years of FPS experience on a PC... I have 3 years of experience on a console... A computer is extremely easy to aim and shoot with... I would have to go with a controller just because it is more of a challenge... I think that people complain about console games too much just because they can't use a damned controller. I can't even beleive you said a Wii-Mote was better than a controller... All you do with that thing is point and click, it takes no skill what so ever to use. You don't have a PC capable of playing UT2004 or Quake Live?

Or how about this free game: http://www.warsow.net/

No I don't. I also don't own either of those games.

I wouldn't play the PS3 version of UT3 even if I had it because it's severely gimped. Why would I want to play UT3 at 80% speed? That's just fucking lame.

Sighs... more excuses. Let's just play Mario Kart or something. :o

You mean to tell me you don't have a PC capable of playing Quake fucking 3? A game released in what, 1999?

I can play Quake 3, but it's pirated so I don't know if it'll work online. However, the point was that I play something on the PS3. I'm supposed to use the controller and you the mouse & keyboard, remember?

I never said you were supposed to play something on the PS3, I said you were supposed to play something on the PC with a controller, which is the same difference. It just so happens there are a couple free games that run on old PC's we could use right now, but apparently you don't have the balls.

I would have to say you are the retarded one here.

Oh yeah? I'm talking to someone about having a controller vs. mouse and keyboard match. He says he doesn't have a computer capable of running games from 1999. I call bullshit.

Your comment is that some people don't like upgrading their computers, as an example you say that you only have Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4. One game which was made in 2005, the other last fucking year. Then you challenged me to a duel in either, when neither is even remotely suitable for 1v1.

Also, I don't have a controller for my PC.

PS3 controller is Bluetooth right? I'm sure someone has rigged something up to use their PS3 controller on PC.

You see, this is how it always goes down. It's always some douchebag like you who comes into the thread with the "Dual-Analog is just as good, you can do anything you can do with mouse and keyboard with it." Makes outrageous claims like "I saw people pwning in Counter-Strike with just a keyboard!!" then when someone asks you to step up and prove your point it's all "Well this is just silly anyway, you're dumb for even asking!".

Here's the deal man, if you can get something set up on your computer to play me in either Quake Live, Warsow, or UT2004, all games designed with 1v1 in mind, I will count every kill you make on me as 3, and if with that modifier in place, you manage to win, I will concede to you that dual analog controls are just as good for an FPS.

So if I get 50 kills, and you get 18, I'll declare you the winner and I will come into this thread and tell everyone that you were right.

You're still not getting any of this. When I say that dual analog works just as well, it is a fact. Want proof? Look at the millions of people playing first person shooters on their consoles. If it didn't work, why would they do it?

Your problem is however, that you as a PC fanboy won't accept this fact and have to come with ridiculously nerdish crap like: ZOMG MEET ME IN TEH GREAT SERVERZ SO I POON U ALLZ. You sound like a little dweep living in your parents' basement.

I'll play any game with you online that I have. Just for fun. If you want to "prove points" and whatnot, then you go right ahead and do that. Just don't end up like this guy:

http://pwned.nl/

My fun in PC online shooters mostly comes from raging little fags like you who takes teh gamez oooh too srslsy. Haha, you should start playing Eve Online. There's where the real raging is at.

Oh yeah, I take my games super serious. I sit in my room and practice spinning my mouse around to do the perfect 180.

Fact of the matter is I'm just sick of the bullshit claims people make, and I see no reason why you can't put your money where your mouth is. I never said dual analog controllers don't work, I just said they're vastly inferior. You contend that they are not, and are in fact on equal ground. I asked you to prove it by simply playing a videogame with me, and all you've got is excuses.

You've now got the controller, I've told you about two 100% free games we can use, both specifically designed for 1v1 play, and now that you have no more excuses it's a stupid idea and only a loser would suggest it.

You remind me of those kids who would quit the game as soon as they started losing when they were little. "Kickball is stupid anyway, and you guys are stupid for suggesting we play it. I'm taking my ball and going home!".

Oh now now. Are you sick of people saying things you disagree with. Oh you poor thing. Your life is so awfully hard. :o

You know me from a few years ago. I used to be a major ass PC fanboy. Why do you think I would ever accept dual analogs if they were "vastly inferior"? I'm sure your answer to this rhetoric question will be very refreshing.

As of now, there are 3 options I can take that will result in lulz.

#1. Play your game of choice and cheat. You coming back here and accusing me of cheating will result in epic lulz.

#2. Playing your game of choice and play with my feet. You coming back here and bragging how you've pwnt the great Snoopy will result in epic lulz.

#3. Not going in on your moronic "duel" and watch you call me a coward, resulting in epic lulz.

Option 3 is already proving to be lulzy. Opiate, the new challenger appeared before me and even before I said yes or no he is already claiming I'm a coward and a tit for not having the balls to go in on his pathetic little challenge.

Add me to steam. I think my name there is also "llun". We can go play Half Life deathmatch. One game that isn't completely gay.

Exactly my point. Your one sided views prevent you from actually developing a good taste in video games. For example, you won't play certain games just because you have to play them on dual analog. That means you're missing out. Your silly "vastly inferior" opinion actually prevents you from having fun.

I know you're being a poortroll and all, but still. Grow up. :o
