Creep Along Darkly
Forgive me this conceit; I felt compelled to pen a dark "mood" piece. It follows along somewhat styllistically in the "medley" format that I've been doing recently, in which I'll arrange several single-stanza pieces together into a thematically-unified whole. This one pleases me but, as I have learned, that which pleases me is often untenable.
---
I can see the border of night and still,
I creep along darkly.
There is a star in the sky
Watching me from far up high--
Perhaps I am sleeping--
As I descend the lengths of these streets.
Buildings ascend
Into the night,
Climbing up
The endless and unforgiving sky.
There is a stillness and a quiet
I get no where else
Than those unnoticed minutes
That most pass by asleep;
With my half-closed eyes,
I blot out the light
And rearrange foundation stones
To my unearthly design.
Bask in silence--
Stare at darkened panes,
Spy undeserved gains
And wait patiently for light.
Watch the city's secret face,
See its ghost haunt its hidden place
And remember this night.
Ah, the moon defines
The elegant curves of the boundary
As it snakes along the edge of my sight.
The subtle pulse of the daylight hour
Retreats into somniloquy,
Delivering an unending tone.
The path to the sound
At the heart of it all
Hangs in a void as if placed.
These hands are too fragile and cold;
This face is too weathered and old.
I can only sit and observe it there.
---
Many thanks to Depeche Mode's excellent album Violator and becoming nocturnal for inspiration.

Re: Creep Along Darkly
I don't like that line "unforgiving sky" I've always seen the sky more as an archetypal symbol of "the heavens" which would sound more like it would be forgiving. Archetypal symbolism, something you might want to consider.

Re: Creep Along Darkly
Sir, I am aware of archetypes as I am not retarded. The "unforgiving" part is meant to play off of expectations, which creates tension and drama. Also, no, the heavens aren't forgiving. Because no god.

Re: Creep Along Darkly
I'd love to write something like this. I've always been fascinated by the atmosphere of night.
What made it better was listening to Intertia Creeps by Massive Attack whilst reading it :D

Complimented it very nicely and I even tried 'speaking/rapping' some of your verses along to the beat.

Re: Creep Along Darkly
That album is mad bitchin'. I was hoping for more of an air of the Smiths, but I can see the Massive Attack connection and I sure as fuck am not going to complain.

Re: Creep Along Darkly
Very pleasant read indeed.
Do you have any idea why it would seem you've just been demodded? Treachery afoot?
Forget it, just checked NOTT.
