Ligers get bigger than any lions or tigers because the inhibitor growth gene is in the female lion and the male tiger so if a male lion fucks a female tiger, nothing tells the offspring to stop growing.

Basically they're the equivalent of mules. When a male lion and female tiger mate, the Liger comes out. There's also a Tigon-- female lion, male tiger, and a Leopon-- male leopard, female tiger.
They're all infertile but still badass.
