Default home schooling just seems like a terrible idea

for serious. it just looked like the people that get home schooled are being denied an important experience in life in favour of a slightly better education. in my opinion education is no supplement for life-experience. though most probably make up for the lost years in college, but still.

yeah, personally i wouldn't want my kids home schooled because then they'd just...be at home all the time, alone. school is where everyone makes their first friends, and in some cases friends for quite a long time.

when i was in 8th or 9th grade, my school district started an online academy. sounded cool to me at first, since i "omfg hated skewl!!1" so much back then and wanted to have it easy. it was really meant for kids with behavior problems, and later on lazy asses started taking advantage of it. thankfully i never decided to do that and had a pretty decent four years of regular ol' public high school. a few friends i had did go into it by sophomore year. one's a stupid bitch who used to be smart but now just spends all her time on myspace, online community college (big surprise there), working, and "partying" on weekends, which means going to a few houses where people are sitting around a fire drinking cheap beer and taking pictures with everyone. i just think of her when i hear home schooling/online schooling and a resounding "No" comes to mind.

but i'm sure it works out for some people...Confused

Home schooling would be an excellent idea if there was heavy involvement in sports or social clubs. However, this seldom seems to be the case.

Actually, I was homeschooled after 10th grade. So for my 11th and 12th grade year I just sat at home online doing school. It was all online and I found a small glitch in their testing system that allowed me to see what questions I got wrong and to fix them before submitting a test.

But I really regret not going to highschool. The homeschool was easy but BORING! I wouldn't recommend it for anyone.

Of course when I did it, I had a choice, military school or homeschool... I think I made a good decision.

Homeschooling isnt big in Australia..

I think that you have to attend a government approved school until your 16 or year 10 whatever comes first.
People who are over protective of their kids are weird, and they end up having weird kids.

I once heard some people in Oz listen to school on the radio cause they live in the desert and can't get to one.

School of the Air is pretty rare. There are still some kids that do it, but where they have internet access they use online schools.

What is a military school?

The United States is almost unique in that the term "military academy" does not necessarily mean an institution run by the armed forces to train its own military officers; it may also mean a middle school, high school or tertiary-level college, whether public or private, which instructs its students in military-style education, discipline and tradition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_school

military school, in the US at least, usually refers to a high school aged or younger children's boarding school, where they have uniforms and discipline and other such shit reminiscent of the real military. it's where frustrated parents threaten to send their brat ass kids if they don't shape up.

I was homeschooled my entire life. No high school, nothing. Yeah, it pretty much sucked. The educational value is pretty low unless your parents are hardcore into it; mine weren't.

My social life wasn't too bad though, if you make a point of it you can manage to have lots of friends even if you don't have one central location that you see them all at. It still sucked being home most of the time, and like I said, the education wasn't that great, so I'm having to take remedial math in college now. I'm getting back on track, but I think going to a public school would have helped quite a bit. Oh well.

I can definitely say that I don't support it, most families that do it exclusively are fucking crazy and just want to keep their kids from hearing ideas that they don't agree with, which makes it even harder for the kids to adjust when they actually experience the real world.

This.
Seriously I had the same thing. Never went to a normal school. Parents were religious and didnt want their kids to be corrupted by normal people.
Probably my biggest regret that I never asked to be put in a real school. I knew back then that it was weird a was going to affect me badly, but still did nothing.
Have issues with my parents because I don't respect them for making a stupid choice for me and my siblings. I used to have mild anxiety because of a lack of socializing. So yeah homeschooling sucks.

Why did your parents home school you if they weren't "in to it?"

With charter schools springing up a shit load, at least in my city where the public schools have been sub par for some time, there's a pretty good and free alternative to home schooling for parents that feel like public schools blow. And the kid still gets to socialize with other...people.

I was home schooled until the day I started college. Wow, was that shocking...

Actually, I did go to a 'high school' one day a week to go to classes/turn in homework, and I actually did meet people there. But man, homeschooling is bullshit. I didn't learn a thing.

I'll never forgive my parents for it, it's kind of hard to be socially normal when you're used to being alone most of the time. Even with three years of college under my belt, I still make a lot of awkward social mistakes. It seems like totse attracts our kind.

Oh well... You can't change the past. Mad

Evidently so.:)

Same here, homeschooled my whole life. I, however had a choice and I enjoyed it. I was a total recluse through my earlier years, I had a few really close friends that I hung out with and that was it. I have a lot more of a social life now though.
And as for education, I read. ALOT. And anything I can get my hands on. So I taught myself basically and i still prefer to teach myself how to do most things.

Nothing pisses me off more than parents who put their kids in homeschool because the "Christian community" is doing it more and more. When you argue with them that they will not get much of a social experience, they come back with "Well, there are a lot of Church functions where all of the homeschooled kids can interact with eachother." One problem with that: these kids will only know how to interact with other Christians. Unfortunately for them the world is full of non Christians that they will have to deal with after their schooling, and they will not know how to handle it. Its just a bad idea in my opinion.

Actually, a lot of public schools are really shitty. I mean, I'd rather home school than "public school" in Detroit, for example. Though I think schools are important when it come to socializing and making friends.

Not saying all home-schooled people are like this, but I find that a lot of them tend to be very socially awkward...

It's common sense. IF you spend 24 hours a day without your peers, you won't know how to interact with your peers.

FUCK HOMESCHOOLING.

Homeschooling is the reason why my only friends are over the internet and why i have so much angst against my mom and dad.

I have NO social skills what-so-ever. Infact the last girl i talked to i ended up throwing up on.

I did however convince my parents to let me go into highschool at grade 9. It is at this point in my life i realised how held back i have been my entire life and started indulging in activities with Satan.

Highschool is where i learned how cool it was to smoke weed and where i met the girl i lost my virginity to.

I was there for 1 and a half years until i failed miserably because all i had done when i was "Home Schoolin'" was:

1. Sit on my computer.
2. Masturbate (became a professional)
3. Sleep
4. Eat.
5. IRC
6. Counter-Strike

I then proceeded to get my GED.

and now i work at a gas station, go home do drugs and sit on my computer.

THANKS MOM AND DAD!!

LOVE YOU!!

I did online schooling for my senior year. I mainly did it so I could have a flexible schedule, try some new things, not have to take classes I didn't need, and get used to life without high school...it had its pros and cons. I figured it'd have all the benefits of school without the negatives, but it wasn't really like that. I went into it thinking that I'd have more free time and I'd still be able to hang out with all my friends outside of school...well, I did get more free time, and I still hung out with people, but you figure out pretty fast that you're not gonna see as many people as you'd like. Those people that were sorta your friends you stop seeing after the first couple of months, cuz you were never that close to begin with. You rarely meet new people, which sucks. Then you still see your good friends, but grow apart a bit at the same time.

I think kids should go to school with other people until at least high school, then maybe give them the option of home or online schooling. If you give them the option any younger, they'll just figure "Cool no more going to school" and go for it, then miss out on a lot of social development. I met a few people that had been home schooled pretty much their whole lives last year (Christian parents), and while they're cool and everything, they just seem really sheltered. You can tell they haven't had to deal with many viewpoints besides their own, and it's gonna make things more difficult for them in the real world.
