| Clean Tech So you want to reduce your carbon footprint, get off the grid, and cruise around in an electric car that accelerates faster than a Ferrari. Where do you start? What do you use? What tech is appropriate for the job? Ask here and find out. |

Making/Burning hydrogen to improve fuel economy
Do you know what electrolysis of water is? If you failed grade 10 science: its the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen gas by means of running an electrical current through it.
How does this improve your fuel economy? My friend put it to the test in his 03 Jetta. He had a jar of water in the back of his car with 2 elecrodes in it running from his car battery (it uses 5 amps, for reference headlights use 10). When his car was on the oxygen would bubble towards the positive electrode and into his trunk, the hydrogen however would follow a tube back to the front of his car into the air intake (past the filter). His engine would suck in air and hydrogen instead of just air, burning his gas more effiently and improving horsepower without making the engine work harder. (similar to nitrous oxide injections)
This is fairly new I think the numerous blogs and websites popping up on it said he would get 20% better fuel economy. Some were able to acheive 50% better, with the trunk lined up with these.
He hasn't even run a tnak yet so results of his test to follow. In the mean time google or watch some videos on youtube about it. search for "electrolysis hydrogen fuel economy" and something should pop up.

Um, yeah. Just like nitrous oxide. Except where hydrogern is a fuel and nitrus is an oxygen carrier. Nitrous works because when it decomposes in the cylinder the ratio of O2 to N2 is higher than it is in atmospheric air.

Re: Making/Burning hydrogen to improve fuel economy
You could use both the oxygen and hydrogen, no?

Re: Making/Burning hydrogen to improve fuel economy
If the device claims to improve fuel economy, then it is total bullshit. It takes more energy in electrolysis than you recover by burning the hydrogen.
Also the air flow sensor is still detecting the same amount of air with the hydrogen. Combustion will now be slightly rich since the injectors inject the same amount of fuel as before. This means less fuel is being burnt, but the same amount injected.

Re: Making/Burning hydrogen to improve fuel economy
I just thought of a kit I should assemble and sell on the internet. It is called the do it yourself hybrid. First you install a second alternator in your car, then on the same accessory drive you install an electrical motor. The new alternator will use all of it's generated electricity to drive the electric motor, increasing the fuel economy and power!

Good luck. I don't think the serpentine belt will handle that much extra power. Why not replace the alternator existing alternator with a larger one or even make it an alternator/motor. That would further increase efficiency.

Well it doesn't matter either way... as a lot of people who buy these kits end up cracking their block due to the hydrogen concentrations being way off and causing the engine to perform way outside of normal operating parameters.
