crystals power: inherant or not?
Okay, I am begging the question of whether or not crystals even HAVE power; for the purpose of this thread, that is a stipulation.
The question is, do they have power per se, or do they somehow help us increase, focus, whatever our own power.
I have been giving this issue serious thought for about twenty years, and have concluded that it is both.
On the side of the inherant power argument, we see that some stones have been used worldwide for much the same purposes, such as jade, quartz, and carnelian. Quartz crystals in particular, have been used in almsot every known shamanic culture, even when they did not occur there naturally. (I devoted a whole class session to this when I was teaching at Western New Mexico University.)
What's more, some of the same effects of the same crystals have been noted by numerous people who were unaware that it was what they (the crystals, that is) were "supposed" to do. Notably, the quartz cluster overamping effect, and the lapis/third eye effect.
On the other hand, some have argued that the only power we have is the power of presence and attention (E. J. Gold). For instance, agate is widely thought to have protective power. It may be that simply carrying it serves as a pre-conscious reminder, we are more careful, and hence avoid problems that we might otherwise fall into.
I am hoping someone else will jump in here--retrograde Mercury has been kicking my ass lately.

I'm not familiar with the power from crystals or rocks. How do I find out what a particular rock or crystal does for me?

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
Why should crystals have power opposed to other minerals?
What is so special about their make-up that would make them inclined to have such assumed powers?
Why not diamonds? After all, they are the strongest of minerals.

I've heard of people having intense spiritual/healing experiences while in the presence of the crystal skulls. But, basically all my crystal power experience comes from a History Channel special.

Good point. I should have been more specific, since agate( which I use) does not look like a crystal (but is in reality a form of micro-crystalline quartz, as opposed to the more familiar macro-crystalline form of quartz).
Lapis is also useful, but it is neither a crystal nor a mineral.

Not some crap that can be open to interpretation, HARD evidence.
The entire point of this thread is to get people's interpretations on whether or not crystals have innate power or not. Contribute or GTFO.
Personally, i'm torn between thinking that it's all just the placebo effect, or that a crystal can simply channel a person's "energy" differently, depending upon what type of crystal it is.
That being said, the fact that different cultures have found that the same types of crystals do the same things is extremely interesting, could someone bestow upon me a few more examples of this?

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
^Here are a few examples. Brazilian shamans put small quartz crystals in their rattles. Aussie shamans actually insert quartz crystals into their bodies. A tribe of Indians on the coast in California do a ritual once a year invovling a large quartz crystal, which is struck on a certain rock--if the crystal breaks, the world is supposed to end. In my own shamanic work, when i do long-distance soul retrieval, I use a quartz crystal as a means of transmitting the soul energy to the client.
That's all I can think of on the spur of the moment.

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
The power is definitely innate in the crystal.
I'm basing this off of the fact that diamond can be used as a semiconductor to expand electronic functionality. That functionality happens no matter what the user "thinks". So diamonds definitely have power.

That seems pretty ridiculous. Crystals are just lucky formations of molecules, they have no "spiritual" power. But they do have some power, like diamonds being used as a superconductor or quartz being used as a lens.

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
First off, a mineral is crystalline if the atoms or ions that compose it are arranged in a geometrically precise pattern of atoms which are held together by shared electrons.
If you didn't understand that don't worry about it. The important thing to understand that this orderly pattern also ensures that the energy emitted by a crystal is equally orderly and consistent. A crystal's vibration and energy pattern is steady which is one of the reasons that crystals can help to steady the often-erratic energy patterns of humans. People have been using them in various ways since the neolithic times.
Whether or not anyone believes they have metaphysical properties doesnt change their makeup on an atomic level.
Quartz is an oscillator so yes they have power, they store, transmit and recieve energy. Perfect energy, not the type from a lightbulb either. Pure and natural, crystals are fuckin great, hold one, get a collection and see how you react to them and how others react to them. Nice thread!

I have absolutely no experience in this but i have a theory. Anybody else ever seen that mythbuster where they investigated pyramids? They put an apple under a pyramid made our of pipes and left one out in the open. Both were exposed to the same amount of air, light, all that, but the one under the pyramid didn't rot as fast as the other. Well the way the silicon atoms in a quarts crystal bond, they form a pyramid shaped latice. What any of this means i have no clue, but maybe there is some relation.

It's absurd until it's scientifically proven. Crystals do have power -- the power to focus light if they're curved in the right way, the power to be semiconductors, etc. I don't see where you're getting all of this psuedo-science from, though.

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
I won't doubt the power of crystals since sleeping with an amethyst cluster. Many times I have been in sleep paralysis (that never happens) when I sleep with it, and one time I even took a nap and had a dream and in the dream I had the image of my poster burned into my retina. I was talking to people in my dream saying I had double vision, while repeatedly washing out my eye but nothing worked. When I woke up I realized I was facing the poster. I fully believe amethyst affected that dream, and it's because I have never had a single dream like that in my life.
I also have a small red one they sent with it when I ordered. I had a clear/purple one but forgot the name of them both and lost the clear one.
Believe it or not we definitely are connected to the electricity on a very very subtle level. Im sure there are scientific explanations of human electricity, maybe not but from personal experience, there should be. Times when I was in deep states of mind I realized my very moment to moment "mood" affected the energy around me, and people's energy effected mine. It was the most mind boggling thing, a lot of things that happened in that state of mind were though. The light bulb dimming out when my mind was cloudy, then flicking back to bright when it was clear. I wish I were kidding, it was actually humbling and no I dont care if you think Im nuts. Reality can be very dreamlike without mushrooms, few people I think have an oppurtunity to realize that.
I think as far as them having energy it's more of an interplay of energies, which is what all reality seems like anyways. Some energies are just different than others. I have yet to touch quartz but from amethyst alone I have experienced some damn strange things, and do hold an interest towards seeing what else I can learn :)

Hey Arms,
Is it common to become "overcharged" from a crystal? I've noticed that I can be overcome with energy when I wear my crystal quartz necklace. Should I be wearing it for long periods of time?

Yes, yes, yes. The concept of getting over-amped from quartz has been noted by several authors, and both Kathy and I have noticed it ourselves.
Personally, I always wear quartz due to a pact I made with the quartz deva some years ago, but I don't wear it next to my skin.
You want to avoid wearing lapis next to the skin as well.

I would think that crystals, by themselves do not hve any power, however they focus the underlying energy that is all around us. if that makes any sence.
So a question, WHY should you not wear crystals close to the skin?

Crystals do not have religious or spiritual powers. They look pretty, which is why they're used in shamanic rituals. Shamanic often involve brilliantly colored masks and shit like that, but we don't say those have powers. That'd be just plain silly, right?

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
My idea on crystals is that they are basically filters. say when energy/frequencies come in contact with said crystals/minrals they interact with each other by the crystals imposing their resonance to the input. whether that would mean that the crystals would be putting out only their own resonance, a modified version of the input or both.
Eg. kinda in way how a quarts crystal works in electronics
Sorry if this seems ambiguous but its just a small potion of a larger theory I have regarding crystals and there relationship with the physical and metaphysical, so consider that as in idea open for interpretation. I would like to get around to making a decent post on the subject when I can.

Actually, NaCl is not a corrosive agent at all (and when I was referring to salt, I was referring to the general category of salts Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_(chemistry))). Water is the corrosive agent, any salt will simply assist in conducting the electrons through the solvent.

1) Held together by shared electrons? That would be a covalent network, not a structure made of ions.
2) How does a crystal have an inherent "energy pattern"? Do you mean how it resonates or something?
3) What is a human's energy pattern? Last time I checked, we don't really emit EM waves strong enough to actually do anything, let alone interact with a piece of quartz in a manner that will affect the neurons in your brain. Hell, you have to use a very powerful electromagnet to do that, and it doesn't do much good--it actually temporarily shut off the speech part of the subject's brain (the speech part being where the magnet was pointed at), resulting in hilarity.
TL/DR: yes it resonates, but resonation of a crystal does not significantly affect your brain, and if it did it would not be in a beneficial manner.

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
I think that dhalgren's haze point was that in a crystal the atoms form geometrically precise patterns, rather than the manner of bonding.
The atoms would share electrons, but (of course) the ions would not.
I have a few questions though,
What form of energy are crystals thought to emit?
What units of measurement is this energy measured in?

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
No.
Although very similar, atoms and ions are different things.
When an atom gains or loses electrons so that it aquires an overall charge, it becomes an ion.
But my point was that we shouldn't be picking on that first point which is basically correct, but on the other two points which deal with the mystery energy.
Your comments on the last two points do need answering by the true believers.....Anyone?

Your comments on the last two points do need answering by the true believers.....Anyone?

Yes, I should have said the ions are atoms =)
But I agree, it's all close to correct until it suddenly jumps from physical oscillation (resonance) to this mysterious "human energy" stuff :/
PS: Is it just me, or does the term "negative energy" just make you want to punch someone?

It's just you. Nothing "makes" anyone do or feel anything. We have free will.
Granted, the term "negative energy" in a metaphysical context is essentially meaningless. At the Highest Level, there is no difference between so-called positive and negative energy.
Energy is energy.

Energy is energy.
Free will is up for debate, but I won't go into that now.
My problem with "negative energy" is that you might as well say "taking energy" rather than giving negative (amounts of) energy. While it works out to be the same thing, it just sounds idiotic. You don't hear people saying "HE GAVE ME NEGATIVE ONE PURSES" when they're robbed. While the concept of giving/receiving negative amounts of energy can be useful if you're dealing with equations, it just sounds retarded when you use it while speaking.
And it's blatantly wrong if you think of it as an entity in of itself.

This post is full of negative energy ldo.

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
The idea of negative energy is not unknown to science, mainly to explain the interesting results of their equations, like the Dirac Sea.
I have a feeling that you mean something completely different.
In relation to crystal power, do you use the terms Energy, Work, and Power in the same way as they relate to physics (i.e. precisely defined and measurable) or are they broader terms?
The term 'energy is energy', while obviously a truism, to me relates to the law of conservation of energy which requires the precise usage of the words involved.
When you speak of energy and power, do you mean something like emotions, the breath of Chi or the life-spark of the Universe?
Also, what is the Highest Level? Of what is it the Highest?
Sorry for the many questions, but I think there is some cross-purpose talking going on...

That's more like it.

Words can have multiple meanings depending on the context, scientific language is no exception to this.

By Highest Level, I mean having to do with the seventh level of consciousness, also known as unity consciousness. This is the esoteric level that saints and ascended masters live in. Some of us are privileged to get a wee glimpse now and then.
Most of us are down around levels one or two. For more info, see the eponymous thread in My God.

Re: crystals power: inherant or not?
Thank you for your answers, I read your thread on levels.
We have quite different views of the world, but each to their own.

on point, crystals do have an energy but so does everything else. I have a friend who is very in to crystals and he constantly tries to show me how they are so special, yet he cant do anything energetically with them that I cant do without them, and when I try to work with them they only annoy me and get in the way. they are good for giving blessings to the less adept though, it gives them somthing physical to believe in.

Narcissism is fun!
I suppose you would know.
But your comment means nothing in this context.
There is nothing narcissistic about knowing where one is and knowing one's limitations.
