cheap sword = $300-$400 retail.
In my book, at least.
peace out.

Exactly..
"You get what you pay for"
One of these $20.00 "Ninja" swords isn't worth the steel it was forged with. I wouldn't touch a sword for less than $200.00.

Re: sword!!! cheep
That's what I'm saying alchemist. My dad's been doing that since he was a teen and has been showing me the ropes. A lot more reliable that way and you can make it for cheaper, and custom exactly the way you want it.

Re: sword!!! cheep
There's a reason why custom swords go for as much as they do.
If I wanted a sword, I would shell out the dough. Steel stock and a handgrinder aren't going to make a useable sword. Choice of steel, tempering, balance, edge geometry, skill of grinder are all factors in creating a useable piece.
peace out.

Re: sword!!! cheep
If you want a combat-Ok sword, get a buddy that blacksmiths (and doesn't burn his own ass off). If you would settle for a crap display sword (but can still cut up ass, just isn't as strong/sharp/quality) then www.5stardeals.com (http://www.5stardeal.com) .
I got me a claymore

Re: sword!!! cheep
lol you don't chop with a sword. Yeah maybe if it was a huge broad sword, but I pity the fool who thinks you are gonna chop wood with a sword. Anyway, if you want a good japanese sword, search for something called Shinken, it is the usable battle ready kind of high quality. You can't make a good sword from steel and a grinder, because a good sword will have different levels of lamination, different hardness for the blade and spine, full tang, and be made of carbon steel. You can get a good sword for cheap at www.swords-online.com (http://www.swords-online.com) my friend bought a templar sword from there, extremely nice, he chipped the blade like an idiot though.

If you *can't* chop wood with a specific sword without damaging it, then that specific sword is complete and utter shit.

Re: sword!!! cheep
".....You can't make a good sword from steel and a grinder....."
Utter nonsense.
".....because a good sword will have different levels of lamination....."
Clarify that please.
".....different hardness for the blade and spine....."
Whether you grind or forge is irrelevant here, as you are talking about the heat treatment process.
".....full tang, and be made of carbon steel....."
These two qualities have "what" to do with grinding -vs- forging?
In all, I agree that alchemists' comment was horribly misleading because it really isn't as simple as just getting a grinder and banging one out, ESPECIALLY if you've never made any knives or other cutlery beforehand.
A good sword will depend on many factors, as sph3ric pyramid pointed out, but the major one in my opinion is the knowledge and skill of the person making that sword...

Re: sword!!! cheep
i could get a leaf spring from a car, bang it flat and grind a decent edge on it. it would take a lot of time, but you would end up with a very strong flexible sword that could be used to chop down a tree. you could temper the edge if you wanted to, i wont get into that here, but this method is much easier then forging one. its even easier to buy one, but i dont have several hundred bucks for a "real" sword, and you can make it look pretty good if you put a litle effort into it, ie. you give a shit. a samurai sword would be much harder as its so thin and relativly light. best of all you make it the way you like it. if its too heavy grind more off, add more weight to the handle, its a work in progress

Flatten it by 'cold' hammering? Nope. Assuming you could actually get it flat and even by cold hammering, you will have put so many stress points in the spring that it'll only be a matter of time before it breaks on you (if it didn't already break on you when you were hammering it).

Re: sword!!! cheep
the swords you buy from catalogues are PIECES OF SHIT. THEYRE TOO FUCKING BRITLE TO BE OF USE TO ANYBODY BUT SOME JACKASS WHO THINKS ITS COOL. If you hit shit with them they will snap. I saw on the shopping channel some tosser in americas sword snapped when he banged it on the counter, cutting him. (Live on air to, I was watching) Theyre cast in cingle pieces from shiny hicarbon steel, which is shity. You need to start a sword with low carb steel, then fold it by continuous hammering over several hours, introducing breaks into the matrix of the steel. otherwise a problem-dislocation- in the steel can cause it to break. Then you temper the edge by heating it -the edge- red hot, then sloshing it in water. If you have a shitty catalogue bought sword, try annealing it by heating it hot then letting it cool slowly in air. This removes dislocations. I've never tried it though. Your sword shouldn't break when you hit it on wood or on other steel, if it would, then throw the fucker away for your own safety.

Re: sword!!! cheep
I have bought swords from those web sites, some are good...they are are durbale enough to fight with, sharp enough to kill someone, and eys they can cut wood...depending on what sword you are talking about, make sure you buy a sharpened one, if not get it sharpened for a fwe bucks. But shit, you can get a Arabic Scimitar for around $30, sharp as fuck, made from steel. You can cut off a limb with it, I shit you not. The reason the sell cheaper also, is because they don't have a middle man to pay...most of the money you shell out for something new, atleast 50% of it is usually profit. The rest was for labor and material. So if you pay $50, as oppossed to $200, doesn't mean it sucks...but you simply bought it cheaper, think whole sale. I bought the BLADE sword from asia for $50 direct...if I bought it in the US or at a store, they sell for $200+

Re: sword!!! cheep
".....Theyre cast in cingle pieces from shiny hicarbon steel, which is shity......"
High Carbon steel IS what you want in a good blade, whether knife, sword, or other... though I will agree that cast steel (in the traditional sense), and stainless is inappropriate for swords unless forged and heat treated properly. Blades made with cast steel using the stock removal method or stamping will be low quality.
".....You need to start a sword with low carb steel, then fold it by continuous hammering over several hours, introducing breaks into the matrix of the steel....."
Simplistic... and wrong. Why people actually believe this type of crap is beyond me.
Using your description as the word to go by, then you are saying that a sword made from mild steel (low carbon content) that has been "folded" several times will create a blade of better quality than a sword made from high carbon steel using proper forging and heat treating techniques, or even a blade that was made by stock removal and properly heat treated.
BULLSHIT.
Unless you are adding actual carbon content while "folding", you will end up with nothing more than a mild steel blade that will bend quite easily when you hit something that provides moderate (or more) resistance, and that cannot be hardened or tempered worth a shit... if at all.
Feel free to say "I wasn't talking about mild steel..." if you want, but you did say low carbon content and that's what it amounts to.
".....introducing breaks into the matrix of the steel. otherwise a problem-dislocation- in the steel can cause it to break....."
Myth.... crap.... BS.
".....Then you temper the edge by heating it -the edge- red hot, then sloshing it in water......"
That's hardening it, not tempering.
".....Your sword shouldn't break when you hit it on wood or on other steel, if it would, then throw the fucker away for your own safety....."
Spoken like someone who has no clue about the limitations of swords (or any bladeware) or how to actually use one.
".....DAMN STRAIGHT, IF THE STEEL ISN'T FOLDED AT LEAST TWO-HUNDRED TIMES ITS CRAP. QUICK METAPHOR-- PLYWOOD IS STRONGER THAN PINE AS DAMASCAS IS STRONGER THAN 440....."
If ignorance is bliss, you must be a pretty happy fella. Or is it because of something the CIA wrote about sword blades back in the early 1920's? Your metaphor also proudly displays the ignorance of someone who knows nothing of either wood or metal, which isn't too surprising...

Do you know what stock-removal is? Are you aware of the components of which damascus is composed?
peace out.
