What is 0 divided by 0?
What is 0 divided by 0?
Anything divided by 0 equals 0...
0 divided by anything is infinite...
Anything divided by itself is 1...
Which of these rules takes precedent over the others?

1) you cant divide by zero. anything multiplied by 0 is 0.
2)0 divided by anything is 0.
3) you got one right.
there is no answer. it cannot be defined. you can't divide by 0.

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
0/0 is an indeterminate form. You can't specifically say what it would be unless it was encountered in an equation....you could use limits and limit properties to find out what it was...
example:
f(x)=(x^2-4)/(x+2)
at x = -2, f(x)takes on the indeterminate form of 0/0. However by simple algebra and limit properties we find that lim x-> -2 of
f(x) = 0

I have become smarter since I made this post...
5x0=0
5=0/0
You can't divide by zero because anything divided by zero can equal anyting else. It really is a mathematical black hole.

The problem with that is, the term 'each person' doesn't make sense.
Sure, since there are no people you can say that practically, 'each person' means 'zero people'
But arithmetic doesn't deal with practically, it deals with technically. And technically, your people-and-apples analogy doesn't make sense.

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
mm anything divided by 0 is still the same number it was before
example
999/0 = 999
0/0 = 0
hmm this is strange
0 is nothing but at the same time 0 is the middle of everything
example
-1 0 1
-999999999~ -0- 999999999~
so in reality 'sp" 0 is something :S now my brain hurts
wow 0 rulez :P

Please think before posting your theory. If you divid any number zero times, you get zero.

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
I hope rbrt gets a divide by zero error and his brain shuts down, causing his life functions to stop working.
Or maybe, I'll tell him to
for(int x = 1; x > 0; x++);
or even
public static int infiniterecursion ( int x )
{
return infiniterecursion(x+1);
}
Oh yes, this would a funny fate to put on someone.

You can not divide by zero. Right now open up the calculator program on your computer and try it. Get a pocket calculator and try it on that. You won't get anything, but an error.

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
You CAN divide with zero. the result will be infinite. Just think about it. If you had eg. 2 apples and no people to eat it (equals 2/0) then the amount of pieces of apple that can be eaten is infinite (theoretically).

Thinking about that, it seems to me that if you had 2 apples, and no-one to eat them, the total apples that can be eaten is theoretically zero, seeing as there is no-one there to eat them.

Infinity isn't a number...
The number of pieces that can be eaten could be 1, or 3, or 274.598634.
Hence anything divided by zero is undefined.

That's dividing zero by two.
ie, zero apples divided among two people.

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
0 is not nothing, but it is not something either
same goes for 1,-1,2,-2. i think they're better defined as properties making why the division by zero is not possible like suckmyrocket described so well.
division by zero is impossible simply because there is no solution.

devidin by 0 gives you an infinite amount of answers if i remember correctly, that would explain the error.. nothin can display al the numbers in the universe

Why wouldn't 0 be nothing?
If you had 1 apple and 1 person to eat it (1-1), you'll have NO apples to eat anymore!
--
It is impossible because there are infinite answers. you could calculate it as you would calculate eg. pi or 2sqr
so n/0 would be 0.0000...001 AND 0.0000...002 (so on, so on) 99999...9.99998 and 99999...9.99999 .

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
How about this to confuse everybody...
x^2 - x^2 = x^2 - x^2
x(x - x) = (x + x)(x - x)
Divide both sides by (x - x)
x = (x + x)
x = 2x
Divide by x
1 = 2
hehehe now its your turn to work out whats wrong with what i just did (think 0)
By the way, if you think about it, this highlights the stupidity of thinking about seriously considering the division of 0...

Re: What is 0 divided by 0?
"Why wouldn't 0 be nothing?
If you had 1 apple and 1 person to eat it (1-1), you'll have NO apples to eat anymore!"
can't you see the answer yourself there?
if you had 1 apple and 1 person to eat it, there would not be nothing to eat, just simply no apples to eat.
why do people have such a hard time grasping the concepts of 0, nothing, and infinity?
here is a simple way to understand why it cannot be done.
let's use kindergarten math shall we?
12/6=2 why? because 2*6=12
12/0=x
now using the same reverse application 0*x=12.
give me the value of x?
IT CAN'T BE DONE.

The number zero doesn't exist in this universe anywhere, even in a singularity. So dividing something by zero by zero is just a play on words. "nonononononono" is correct imho.
