the halo story line was good, too bad it didn't have the sweet level design and varied gameplay to back it up. and it wasn't THAT good. it's not something you'll remember for ever and ever. the only good thing about halo is the combat, and multiplayer.

the Metal Gear games have the best story lines, as did Half Life. Doom 1 & 2 did not have story lines, they were just levels connected together, with some text telling you that you're going deeper into hell. but the story line in those games weren't relevant in the least.

I liked Spiderman and FATF, I didn't think they were particularly wonderful, just a decent, fun movie to sit down and watch for an hour or two.

Zelda, maybe, the Final Fantasy series has a good story to it too. Also, Resident Evil.

Conkers was definitly a fun ass game on 64. Hook up 4 controlers and let the insanity begin. It was head slicing,toe tapping,round after round of fast paced fun!

For me, The Legacy of Kain series, without a doubt. Hell, Its one of my favourite stories regardless of media (and I read allot of fiction)

River City Ransom, Parasite eve series ((the first game sucked, but the story line was good)) and.....xenogears story is shaping up to be the best ever.

Pac-Man-- Dude, okay, so there's this yellow greater-than-or-less-than sign and it goes around eating these white dots and getting chased around by ghosts... And... Uum... Yeah.

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen--Yeah, it took two Queen song titles and stuck 'em together, but the story of this game was SWEET. The only catch was that you as the player had to actually take the time and search out the story for yourself.

---In other words, you could just play this game through and you ended up with a fairly decent early console tactical RPG. But if you REALLY played the game and kept up with what was going on in the game world as you made your way across the land, you ended up with a very rich story that makes some fantasy games look somewhat trivial in comparison. To top it off, towards the end there's this kicker that makes you wonder exactly what you're fighting for... As strange as it is, Ogre Battle is a very personal game, because what you get out of the game depends heavily on what your personal views on many things are. Come on, a game that starts off with your very own TAROT CARD reading has got to be somewhat personal, right?

Super Metroid-- How this game was able to take a funny little adventure game on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System with a one-page introduction to what's going on and turn it into one of the best sci-fi stories is beyond me. But it worked. And it was incredible.

Speaking of Metroid...

Metroid Fusion-- The story of Prime "There's bad guys on this planet, so go kill them" was so-so for me, but Metroid Fusion was a kick in the ass in terms of storyline. It even managed to expand upon the ideas set forth by Super Metroid. The idea of missions and such in a Metroid game was a turn for the better if you ask me. It gave a sense of direction to a game that would otherwise be... Well, just about exploration and getting lost. It added a focus to the game and gave background to a lot of things. Plus, seeing metroids again after they'd supposedly been wiped out brought a smile to my face... And seeing an Omega... Whoo!

I don't know about Deus Ex having the best story line. I will give it credit for being the most detailed though, what with the newspapers, books, computers etc just there if you want to look.

I don't think I can give any Final Fantasy game a mention for great story line since they all involve 'omg! big old evil threatens world! only after X amount random encounters with evils underlings can you finally fight him and save the world!'

For Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 look above.

IMHO GTA 3 has the best storyline on the grounds that it was a great pastiche of mafia movie cliches.

Actually, a lot of the Final Fantasies had good storylines too.

I think that morrowind had the best story line ever. Mostly because you found out the history through gameplay and it had no cut scenes to progress the story

Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment, and Neverwinter Nights (Joking about NWN, the storyline was pretty gay)

Also, I agree, Morrowind had a great storyline, it was like another world and it had many, many details. I actually ENJOYED reading some of the books too.

Fallouts had a good storyline too, and, though it's commonly referred to, FF7 had a great storyline too. Quite complex, also.

All of the old Lucasarts games had great storylines, especially the Indy ones.

Remember Starship Titanic? Not the most original storyline but it was good none the less.

Einstein goes back in time and kills hitler, causing a parrellel history in which the soviet union and US go to war. Cheesy in an origional sort of way. Gets good when you realize that einstein(game storyline) caused the entire C&C series to happen by trying to prevent war.

MGS had a wicked storyline. MGS2 destroyed the solid snake character by making him a radical instead of a mercenary. Then they killed off the appeal by having him die. Snake was supposed to be an invincible god who fights for the sake of fighting.

Dragon Warrior 4 for the old NES PWNS all modern games, heres why:

*The game itself is divided into 5 chapters:

-The first chapter is the story of a solider named Ragnar who must stop a monster that is kidnapping the children of the world.

-The second chapter is about a tomboy princess Alena, and her caretakers Cristo and Brey, who accompany her on her adventure to win a fighting tournament

-The third chapter is of a lowly merchant named Taloon whos dream is to own his own business and strike it rich

-The fourth chapter is about the dancer sisters Nara and Maras quest to avenge their fathers death.

-And the fifth chapter is of a young boy (or girl) who is destined to grow and defeat the ruler of evil. All the other chapters combine in this one, and by games end you have every previous character in your party.

*Excellent music for an 8-bit game

*Challenging puzzles and mazes

*Graphics far better than most games of this system

I would have to say Planescape Torment, hands down. Baldurs Gate 2 is pretty close storywise, and it ends up being about equal overall as a game due to a better combat system and character customisability, but the best storyline ever is that of Planescape Torment. I mean, it's about an immortal guy with amnesia who buys his own eye back, is chased by the ghosts of those whose lives were consumed to maintain his, opens a portal to another dimension in a morgue using blood, and lets himself be killed or mortally injured many times, just to find out who he is and why he's immortal, with the end boss as your own mortality. The whole mess was caused by an attempt to avoid going to hell, and at the end, you either go there, or cease to exist. It's just so original and cool.

And splinter cell is a good game, but how could anyone find the storyline interesting? I think of it as more of a stealth capability tech demo, the storyline is just kind of lame.

I think some of you are basing it on gameplay and not storyline. Super Mario RPG's storyline surely wasn't too unique...The thing that pisses me off about most rpgs is the plot is often "save the earth" Or "kill someone to save the earth" Annoying.

Dude FF7 beats the shit out of all the games but more specifiaclly 8. When i play ff7 it takes me to a world thats so vast and adventurous, i nearly came myself playing the game and seeing the landscapes. BackuP?
